  • 360 degree needs to be dismantled! In this video, I explore how 360-degree images can be used in 3D modeling. How does 3D scanning with a 360 camera take place and what needs to be done to the images to make them valid for calculating a 3D point cloud? Using ChatGPT, I programmed myself a converter with which Equirectangular images can be converted into Cube map images.

Yes! I was hoping for a workflow for 360 videos that could automate the perspectives. Thanks Olli, keep up the good work - and, nice Finnish laundry room.

The video was really informative, thank you. It's got me thinking about purchasing a 360 camera just for photogrammetry

Wow, Olli!!! So many great things in this video! First of all: That "house" you filmed - how beautiful is that? What kind of "house" is that?! Then there is the video itself, which is just simply awesome, especially the first half with all those unfolding animations! Wonderful! Virtuosic! Would love to know how you did all that, it must have been a tremendous amount of work! - Then your insight in when a cube-unfolding works and when not! Never read or heard about those observations before! Is this documented anywhere or is it all insight that you gained by testing and testing and testing and testing again and again...? - Last but not least your software! What a pity I am not on a PC!
But I wonder why you don't use MetaShape? I get great point cloud results with it and its spherical camera option from my 360 degree videos. Would you mind explaining, why you do not use Metshape?

Thanks Olli. This is very helpful I was using meshroom to do the same thing but this will speed up the workflow.

    Hi Ollie,
I usually use after effects to do this. I know it’s an Adobe program, but I’ve used it for many years so might as well. There is a filter in after effects that will convert equirectangular images into different kinds of cube maps - they’re all similar, but some have different aspect ratios, and in some the faces of the cube are arranged in a different way.
I usually use the one that has three faces on top and three faces on bottom, which gives me a square image that’s easier to handle than the T-shape.
You can then position this larger comp into a new square composition - rendering the different faces of the cube. You can also change the order in which the different faces are rented by animating the underlying composition - giving you the different faces of the cube in the right order. hope that makes sense. If not, I can share a couple of screenshots with you.
All the best, keep up the good work
    Kai

Ok. That is interesting. What is the name of that effect or is it a plug-in that can handle 360 images in After Effects?

@@OlliHuttunen78 Its a regular effect. You can find it under- immersive Video: VR-Convert. You can then select convert from equirectangular (2by1 or 16by9) format to three different kinds of cube maps. You can also shift the center of the spherical image by rotating it. I'll send some screenshots
      Regards
      Kai

Hi Olli! Thank you for all the good tutorials regarding Photogrametry from 360 Kameras, and as well for your cool Script. As an immersive Movie creative I can tell you, that After Effects can easily convert Equi content into various projections - including multiple Cube Maps. From there you can render Image sequences from every frame. Maybe you can upgrade your Application to work with such sequences as well.
But my experience tells me, that your app might be WAY quicker than After Effects... 😀
    Keep up that good work!

Yes. I just heard that After Effect has those tools to handle 360 images and I tried them up. They are pretty handy and quick and you can separate cube faces with those tools quite fast. It is very usable and versatile tool for 360 editing tool bag.

    Hopefully some integration into Postshot.
You can use the equirectangular images within Agisoft. Have you tried that method?

    Hi! Nice video!
Have you researched a possibility to use some kind of segmentation tools to remove human operator from footage? I think it should be possible to generate alpha masks for each frame, using something like "Segment Anything by Meta AI". That would increase a number of usable angles.

How about converting image sequence of cubemaps into a equirectangular seq/vid? Can you add that to your new software? Or anyone knows a soft for that? Thanks.

I created a solution to extract 12 images from one 360° picture.
I use timelapse instead of a video.
    I will test next days...
