My husband took an all natural cat liter container, which is food safe, and cut off the bottom. The shape is rectangular and my medium tray fits into the bottom of the container. If I screw the lid on, I can empty my trays into the container and then use the spout as a funnel into my small or large bags. I can also use it with a regular mouth funnel to fill mason jars. I do not spill my precious food.

I throw my dried mixes, such as milk, eggs, etc into my blender and turn it into a powder. My husband cut the top (pour spout) off of a water bottle (I think 5 gallon) and smoothed the edges. I use that as a large funnel as it fits into my mason jars. A quart mason jar holds so much. I write out all the pertinent information, what it is, how much per serving and water needed, etc, date it and seal the jar. Attach the paper to the jar and put it on a shelf. Jars can be broken and yes they are heavier but I’m 70 and I like the looks of food stuffs in mason jars.
Thank you for another great idea! We call them Hootennannies! I have also heard them called German pancakes, Dutch babies, puff pancakes, pannenkoek and a few more I am forgetting. Loving your channel in my FD journey! Ty!
Pkg tip: when I freeze dry something that can be ‘powdered’ (examples: raw eggs, milk, pourable mixes, etc.) I break it up, slip tray in open end of a plastic bag(ziplock or something similar. I use a twist tie bag I get at Walmart that comes in a box of 100)and dump in. Easy and with no spillage! Then I use my meat tenderizer hammer to gently pound and powder it while holding closed open end. Much easier and less messy than a blender! Then the bag can be used to pour powder in either a jar or Mylar bag. End result takes up way less volume, sharp edges don’t puncture bag, and less to no lumps when reconstitute.
To hold my FD bags upright for filling I stand them up in an empty ZipLock bag box. Put a canning funnel in the bag opening and it works pretty darn good. You could also empty your tray contents into a gallon storage bag, twist it closed and stick a corner of it into your FD bag and snip off a corner like people do with piping frosting. I've never tried that method yet. I just can't see spending $80? $90? for a fancy funnel set-up yet.
I have the funnel from Freeze Drying supplies and LOVE IT. I don’t even set it up with the legs most of the time, but they are quite helpful when doing a large batch.
