    I love how even though Guy is a ridiculously talented hair stylist/magician, he still asks lots of questions because he is keen to continue learning. A big mistake that some stylists make is not furthering their education once they've completed college/beauty school.

  • @georgea_brooklyn

    Guy needs to stop being so rude to his clients. I used to like him, but if I was in a chair with him yelling over me about how dry my hair is and how that automatically makes me a 'liar' about what's in my hair (because apparently all clients lie according to Guy) I wouldn't hesitate to get out of that chair and leave. So rude.

    • @ohheyitsanna

      Georgea-Mae Bampton most clients do lie, I don't think he was calling all clients liars but other people don't get it unless they are a hairstylist . Things can go really wrong if we are not told correct information. We are just looking out for you and your hair

    • @georgea_brooklyn

      +BeautyByAnnabelle I know a lot about hair. I grew up basically in a salon since my sister and mum are hairdressers. I know that people have the capability to lie, but, at least where I'm from, literally no one lies about their colour or hair history since it's silly. He didn't have to be so upfront about his words, he was very rude in doing so. If my stylist spoke like that to me about my hair I would honestly tell them to fuck off, he's meant to respect his clients. Better yet, this woman was paying the two girls, so he can butt out with his ignorant comments.

    • @ohheyitsanna
      @ohheyitsanna 7 років тому +3

      Georgea-Mae Bampton okay I get that but there's always two sides. I don't know where you are from but I'm not the only who agrees that people do lie about it. Sometimes hairdressers are blunt and honest and it can work for some and not for others.

    • @georgea_brooklyn
      @georgea_brooklyn 7 років тому +5

      BeautyByAnnabelle I understand that, yes people do tend to lie. However, this video is up on his channel and on social media - he didn't have to blatantly call her a liar and say other rude things to her right in front of the camera.

    I really wish I could find a stylist around me that does good perms and not the 80's grandma perm. I've called several high end salons with 'perm specialists' and every one of them say 'it's not possible, it will be much tighter than you think. You can't get loose curls with a perm. Beach wave perms don't exist. blah blah blah'. It's so frustrating...They work in the best salons in the city, but they're all still stuck in the 80's. Why are they even called specialists... /rant

    • @tacocatseven
      @tacocatseven 7 років тому +1

      yamaksy I'm think Brazilian blowouts are banned in the EU due to the high concentration of harmful chemicals. There are other straightening treatments you can get done though.

    • @tacocatseven
      @tacocatseven 7 років тому +1

      yamaksy hmm... It's banned in quite a few countries, maybe not all of EU.
      Brazilian Blowout is a specific brand of straightening treatments. It has been proven to release formaldehyde (a known carcinogen). They used to claim it didn't and then were forced to change their labeling due to a class-action lawsuit.
      People should know of the danger they're putting themselves through when using a product.
      PS Some salons will say the offer a Brazilian blowout as people recognize keratin treatments by that name, but are using other brands products.

      Tabby Cat They literally give u a military graded oxygen mask :) Because the fumes are dangerous. And thus offsetting the "danger factor" it is an amazing procedure.

    The moment I saw "digital perm" I knew we were in Korean styling! I am from Seoul and had so many different perms in my hair over the years. And they've all looked ultra natural that no one would know. Perms are so common in Korea. It's mostly a western way of thinking about 70's/80's outdated perms. I love Korea for being so up to date and innovative with hair styling.

Yes, her ends are dry and damaged. But do you really have to say it 10 times? And then to top it all off, you call her a liar and make HER FEEL EVEN MORE uncomfortable than she already did? No Sorry next.

    • @klaradolnikova4184
      @klaradolnikova4184 7 років тому +37

      I don't think he meant to be rude, it seemed more like he said it to emphasize how much of a difference some products can make. Unfortunately, people lie to their hairdressers, who then have a much harder time treating the hair. He said she refused to tell them what she has done to her hair. I didn't see anything rude there. The video was meant to be educational, which can involve the harsh truth.

    Back in the 80s I had a perm made, while I was at the hairdresser with my rods on and the perm liquids, I noticed a thin red colored stream of liquid coming from my head... it was my blood! The woman that did the perm had no idea about what she was doing and she said everything was normal, everything was OK, but it itched and bleeded so bad! And that perm was a nightmare for me, I wanted loose curls and they ended like tight afro curls, I was depressed for a month, it was awful.
    The worst part is that I even had to pay for that nightmare and that I even got the hairdressers laughing at me when I said to them the hair looked nothing as the photo reference I showed them... they said "You are not as pretty as the model".. I was 18 years old then, if anything similar happened to me today I would have sued them to the consumer office, I promise you. My experience was nothing like what you show here, all kindness and professionalism... and I was told the hairdresser I went to was a great salon... oooh, I could have gone to a worse one... or maybe there were not worse ones... Before that perm I had two other ones made and they were OK, I liked them, but that one was my last one.
    The salon closed about a year after that happened, it was not surprising for me if they treated their clients like they treated me.

      Thank You for your words to all of you, this was long, long ago but it was so horrible I didn't forget about it. Some hairdressers are just not aware of how important their work is for the owner of the hair they have in their hands, the result of their work may be capable of so much harm and depression or, on the other hand, so much positiveness and a kick of self esteem in a person's life, it is unbelievable.

    • @MotionPictureMuse
      @MotionPictureMuse 7 років тому +6

      Oh wow, that's terrible... and I thought I had a bad perm experience! I had perms throughout my childhood, with no problems whatsoever. But when I was around age fifteen, I decided to get a "body wave," which is supposed to produce more of a loose curl. My stylist apparently put a few of the curlers in too tightly and the chemicals actually singed off my hair at the root in several places. The rest of my hair was badly damaged, and I had excessive hair loss for almost TWO years. My mom made me go back and complain, so the owner did give me about $100 worth of product for damaged hair... but still, I swore off all hair treatments involving strong chemicals after that!

      Nena unfortunately a lot of people with curly hair aren't shown how to properly take care of their hair. My mom was a hairstylist and would practice on me so I grew up with getting perms all the time. Ladies with naturally curly hair always commented on how beautiful the curls looked and that their hair would never look like that. For a bit I would travel and do hair and I had several clients with curly hair and I always ask them to do their hair routine so I can see what they may be doing wrong. 4/5 brush their hair with a bristle brush. No joke. No wonder the hair is frizzy. You want a wide tooth comb and if you're gonna get a brush, I always recommend (for everyone) to get a wide tooth brush. You don't get the static and frizz like you would a bristle brush. Also, every single client would start brushing their hair from the middle of the back of their head. That's a big no no with all hair. You always start from the bottom and slowly start brushing a little higher than the last, this avoids any tangles and the hair is less frizzy.

    Thank you so much for talking openly about eliminating a lot of the stereotypes around perms! As someone with a lot of very fine, silky hair, a perm has been an absolute must for most of my adult life. Perms make styling my hair MUCH easier - I don't have to fight to add volume & it adds texture that allows me to put my hair up without using an obscene amount of product.
    It's always been something I've had to hide (even scheduling appointments very, very late on a Saturday - when no one else was in the salon except me & my stylist)! I hope you and like-minded stylists can help them to make a comeback.

      I collect vintage beauty trade magazines. In almost every issue I've seen, going back to the 1920s, there are references to needing to know exactly what treatments have been used on the hair, because the chemical residues on/in the hair strands will affect how well the new chemical treatment (perming or dyeing) will work. Clients are often afraid to say they've been doing their hair at home instead of paying a salon to do it, because they don't want the stylist to think they're cheap, or to tell them they did something wrong. It's up to the stylist to convince the client that they need accurate information to know if they need to do anything special in order to make the perm/dye process work properly, NOT to belittle them.

      Well, that's the motto that unwrittenly used in the medical field too. Dont always assume your patient is telling the 100 perc t truth.
      A patient could come in with stomach pain
      Doctor: did you take drugs, shove anything in any orifices, or previously had sex and that could be where your rash is coming coming from, why you're vision is blurred, etc.?
      Patient: No AbSOLuTEly NoT.
      ....later: it was found that patient did take drugs, did have sex with a person who was carrying an std strain, and he/she DID shove something up where it naturally should not be shoved and that was the cause of their injury. Not them "tripping over a rock" and falling into "poison ivy" and the stick just "magically ended up there".
      Some medicines can also react with drugs that might've been taken by a patient. If a patient is lying, their lie can be very costly. Sometimes can even cost his/her life.😔 better to be honest and found out for doing something taboo then to risk your life or hair (in this case) to get the best treatment.

    although to some his attitude in the vid may seem abrasive, I find it refreshing that he's honest. Her hair was damaged and needed to be fixed, as clients we don't understand that whatever we do to our hair at home makes the hairdressers job to fix or change it much more difficult. We decide to cut our hair, go black or super dark, or we bleach our own hair and expect a hairdresser to wave a magical wand and make it perfect. Be honest with what you did with your hair and they can explain to you where you went wrong and how to tackle your hair to make it healthier and look more...pleasant.

    Twisting in big sections while drying and brush it down with finger giver more like a curling iron effect
    and people who have natural curls that they don't want
    Can do the straightening on the parts they want and make waves on the place they want

    In more traditional perms ..you apply a pre treatment and porosity regulator then you blow dry that in ...apply the perming lotion what ever strength to whatever part of the hair is suitable then wrap (without rinsing) then wrap to whatever setting /curling pattern is appropriate. They are just using heated steam rollers. With a blast of cold air. You can just use normal heated steam rollers without the machine and put the dryer on cold. They stopped using the machine because there are smaller more affordable things out there. You have to neutralize both when the rods are in and after they are out even for tight curls. If you want it looser neutralize only after you take the rods out. Also once its out and you are neutralizing you should curl it slightly around your fingers as you go and try and keep the curl. It makes the hair less frizzy and you make sure its neutralized evenly and all of the hair is covered. If you just chuck the neutralizer on like that on loose hair you will get frizz the assistant should have been trying to wrap the curls in her hand as the basin.particularly at the ends ..the perm could have been a lot better. . There is no need for that machine though either. Heated rollers and a dryer will do it.

    You're all missing the point. He was saying they're filling the ends because a LOT of people lie about what's on their hair. He wasn't attacking the model, lol. I'm a stylist, and it is the TRUTH. Flat out lies, or maybe people have done SO MUCH to their hair they forget the mile-long list of other chemical treatments they've had done. Performing a perm over other chemical treatments can be absolutely catastrophic to hair.
    Additionally, if you haven't noticed, Guy's channel is about education. This video is 100% about the digital perm technique. If any of you are stylists, you don't need Guy to give you a step by step instruction on how to be kind to your client- he's giving a demo on a piece of equipment. Lighten up and try being grateful for Guy bringing this cool piece of innovation to your attention.
    Thanks, Guy Tang, for all you do for our industry, and for being unapologetically you.

    I got a digital perm a little more than a month back and can't make my mind up about whether I hate it or love it. Unlike the model above, I had medium rollers rolled up to the ear (instead of the scalp) and the result 3 hours later was disappointing. Was expecting bouncy, voluptuous waves, almost like the kind you get from 1 inch curling irons but it turned out... conical like? My hairdresser also kept stressing that I had to maintain my hair, and I found out why after the 1st wash. If I air dried my hair naturally, it would look slightly wavy bordering to almost straight. If I slept with my semi dry hair in 4 buns, I would have gorgeous curls that held and lasted the entire day (and the next). Can't foresee my perm lasting past the 2nd month. It has been said that digital perms work better for some hair types than others (I have fine, straight hair). O well.

    I have natural curl and my curl pattern is almost identical to how her perm turned out! It looks incredibly natural!!! Love it! I'm so happy they are developing things now to keep our hair healthy but allow us to change things up pretty dramatically. You should do a whole series on new hair care technology!!

    Wow. People with straight hair want curly hair and people with curly hair would do anything for straight hair. Humanity is interesting tbh
