How is it possible to have never listened to Steely Dan? I came across "Do It Again" when I was 9 years old..., and, I was hooked then. Maybe because my father and uncle were jazz fans..., Steely Dan musical structures always reminded me of bop/hard bop (Fagen influence) and crispy guitar licks one would hear from blues (Becker influence)...
That sick bass line is played by one of the greatest session musicians of all time, Chuck Rainey. And the drums are played by one of the greatest drummers of all time, Bernard Purdie. Steely Dan had a reputation for being perfectionists in the studio, so no wonder they recruited perfect session players. Simply amazing.
Steely Dan can easily be recognized by their unique chord progressions. No one and no band in the world are using these progressions. Endless love for them.
That beat you're diggin' was laid down by none other than the incomparable Bernard Purdie on drums and the equally amazing Chuck Rainey on bass. Perhaps the tightest, nastiest rhythm section ever put to vinyl.
It's Donald and Walter.....and a whole bunch of studio musicians pulling it off. Fagen and Becker wrote all the songs, but they don't play all the instruments. They get some of the finest studio musicians of the day to play
I've said it before, but I'm jealous of people who get to experience Steely Dan for the first time. I've been listening over half my life and I haven't gotten tired of them yet.
If you have any interest in audio engineering, sound design and music production steely dan are in a class of their own and their tunes are banging as well
I love watching Jamel react to Steely Dan.....and watching for the 'light bulb' moment when he just stares at the camera with that 'total satisfaction' look. Usually takes about ten seconds! Gold!
Definitely! That more than any other song on The Royal Scam took over my imagination when I'd come home from school and put my dad's records on. Plus on top of the polished studio version on The Royal Scam there's a rough, stripped-down early version on "The Best of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen" that shows how the song developed. Another good one for Jamel would be a side trip into a great cover, the Pointer Sisters (love them!) version of Steely Dan's "Dirty Work" off Can't Buy a Thrill.
Great choice! ''Night by Night" gets skipped over too much too. Jeff Skunk Baxter's ending solo on Night By Night is one of the best ever. And the Jimmie Haskell arrangement is pure jazz, all tenor and alto saxophones and only top ace players!!
It's 2024 when I came across this and I listen to SD all day! Got to see them in 2016 before Walter Becker past away the following year. Great band and there is some good cover bands out there too.
How'd we listen to it?? Usually sitting around a bedroom after school, passing around funny looking objects, phylosofying about the music or the band, usually with a window open!
There’s a beautiful dissonance to this song. The vocal melody has an edge to it that creates a delicious tension that only gets resolved by the hook of the chorus, but then cranks up again immediately with the next verse. This may be my favorite drum track of all Steely Dan‘s work, as the fills and groove that Bernard Purdie provides on this track just hit a whole new level, and blend perfectly with the structure of the song. The guitar solo bridge smooths out the edges for about 16 bars and gives it that warm jazzy smoky lounge feel. The guitar solo at the end just totally rips, and the SPEED of those licks….. especially as they’re going down the drain are pretty mind blowing, and I’m pretty sure even Eddie Van Halen would be proud of those had he played them!
Used to sing Any Major Dude to my son when he was a baby - regular lullabies always sound so sad to me. Any Major Dude is a gem. Second the motion for Caves of Altamira!
Not just two. Donald Fagan and Walter Becker were the co-founders. They had some of the greatest session musicians ever playing on their albums. Walter died in 2017 at the age of 67. I'm 67. Sadly, he & Donald had fought over rights, etc. Donald is still touring today as Steely Dan. Michael McDonald tours with them as part of Steely Dan. The great backup singing you hear in Peg is Michael. Of all rock voices, I want his!
A huge Dan Fan since the beginning. I had already seen them live in 73 (with Elton John) and 74. Had every album. When I bought this album in 76, I couldn't get enough of it. Played it over and over, dubbed it on cassette and played it constantly. Still one of their best.
4:00 That's one of my favorite drum breaks of all time. Not very long, not very complicated, but extremely tasty. Going to the hi hat like that is very unorthodox. And then there's Chuck Rainey's bass playing. The rhythm section playing on this is killer.
Jamel... there's not just two of them. They have some of the finest studio cats in the world...always. It's the Chuck Rainey/Pretty Purdie rhythm machine with Elliot Randall on guitar! Yeah baby.
I love you and your channel, I've been fortunate enough to see Steely Dan 4 times and 2 of those times, they opened the show with Green Earrings. I'm looking forward to watching you enjoy this one Jamel : ) I'm 66 years old now and watching you discover and truly enjoy a band I've been in love with for a lifetime is nourishing to my soul. Stay healthy my friend
Thanks for introducing me to this one Jamal! I’ve been a Steely Dan Dan since my dad introduced me at 10 and I’m 21 now still uncovering gems! Keep rocking bro 👍🏽
I will tell you how I listen to music and have in the past. In my teens I stood in front of my stereo like it was an alter and memorize every word of the lyrics, every song title and every musician on the album. As I got older things changed to a lot of listening in the car. But I have never stopped listening to or loving music of all kinds. YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!! Been busy - sorry I missed this. Yes, I requested this one over and over. Best groove ever! Chuck Rainey: bass, Bernard Purdie: drums. Dean Parks, Denny Dias, Elliot Randall with the 3 part guitar solo.
I have been a Steely Dan fan from the beginning and, still, every time I hear a song I think “that’s my favorite.” Then, next time...”that’s my favorite.”
This album is so EPIC, you have to listen to it all the way through, and when you do, it will cause a strange unusual vibe that is indescribable to come over you like a drug.
First time on your channel and watching THIS reaction. I KNEW you were going pause the music before the 2nd verse to give your feedback. So excited to see the rest of your reaction!!!!
Great Dan tunes to still check out.. Only a Fool Would Say That, Your Gold Teeth, King of the World, Night by Night, Bad Sneakers, The Caves of Altamira, Sign In Stranger, The Royal Scam, and Glamour Profession
Can I just tell you what a kick I get out of watching you discover songs I've loved for years! It brings me such joy watching you, I usually plan on watching just one, but I love your reactions, tonight I watched for 2 hours! Thank you for the joy you bring to these songs and your videos!
It's like hearing the song for the first time again!; I like how you try to enjoy the song first;then review it after listening! The best is sick...and the guitar solo is still considered one of the finest if the past 50 years! You have a good ear for the gold!! ☮️
For years I felt that way about Kamakyriad relative to Nightfly but then I started getting into the outro in On the Dunes. From there I started to appreciate the entire tune. Then I moved on to other Kamakiriad tunes like Florida Room. The entire album is great. Even greater is all of Morph the Cat, which thematically ties in to 9/11 and may be Fagen's most advanced songwriting ever. Jamel should react to What I Do and go from there. ua-cam.com/video/Kl4LhVu8gjY/v-deo.html
This track follows "The Fez" on the album. (On the LP, this is side B track 1, "The Fez" was the last track of side A). Together these two tracks are the absolute peak of skunky spooky '70s funk in the Steely Dan catalog.
Brother J, Steely Ben has the lyric video to this. I was hoping for it... Oh well... appreciate the reaction nonetheless. Please keep the Steely Dan reactions coming. ☮&❤
One of my fav songs and bands!!! I love the fusion of Jazz Rock and Soul music.....is what we called it back then...hahaha...lol.....hahaha because it was from the depths of the soul.
You wanna see how we all listen to music? Just watch your own video! With Steely Dan, you are guaranteed a groove experience of a lifetime. Next to the best music I ever heard, is watching your reaction, feeling that implosion of melodies and rhyme and funk in time, so genuine surprise in your eyes just brings a joy that you just realized! ✌️
Yup , My dad’s favorite Steely Dan album. Carmona’s Rocks collecting Halite, somewhere in the Mojave desert. Thanks Pop, I will always chairish those days spending time with you…. Steely Dan and Pink Floyd’s Division Bell will always remind me rockhounding with my dad. Much love & CHEERS 👍 🎣🐻
The version of Green Earrings they played on the Plush T.V. set is, in my opinion, the greatest Dan performance of any of their work. Man, I must have played it 500 times and it just gets better and better. My kids are SD crazy and it's probably the best thing they will ever inherit.

Mr. Jamel, please consider Every Kind of People by Robert Palmer 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Lol! I love this song!
Yo u got to react to Donald Fagen I.G.Y. He’s the lead singer of steely dan. It’s off his solo album the nightfly. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Steely Dan always knew how to make drums sound great.
“It just keeps getting better and better!” No better or more accurate statement was ever made about Steely Dan.
How is it possible to have never listened to Steely Dan? I came across "Do It Again" when I was 9 years old..., and, I was hooked then. The look on your face at around 1:39...satisfaction with expectations
Fagens keyboards..Fun-ky

He's the best!
Real talk
Those two also gave us the legendary groove on "Rock Steady" by Her Highness Aretha Franklin.

Here's the foundation without vocals/lead guitar for this wonderful song. It's a wonder by itself! ua-cam.com/video/B3rDQUCHnMI/v-deo.html
Steely Dan can easily be recognized by their unique chord progressions. No one and no band in the world are using these progressions. Endless love for them.
It’s called a mu chord, and yeah it is hugely distinctive.
Man, that E minor 11 with a 9 chord in Aja sends me.
I think Frank Zappa would disagree.
@@johnwescott1500 Maybe. Any examples?
Those jazz chords can be strange. And so intricate. Well done!
They were also very demanding. A musician my spend hours doing his part over and over.
Donald ...and then only to find it didn’t make the final cut! 😂
Agree! Two geniuses plus an endless lineup of stellar colleagues! Nothing better than Steely Dan 💖
Not even Walter playing the guitar solos on this. The 2 solos were Denny Dias and Elliot Randall.
Yup
I've said it before, but I'm jealous of people who get to experience Steely Dan for the first time. I've been listening over half my life and I haven't gotten tired of them yet.
Impossible that you will!😌
I’ve just recently got into them, it’s so nice being able to enjoy something for the first couple of times!

Well you've had a year now and I'll guarantee you've gotten into them big time!!!
Best band of all time.
It’s really hard to choose a favorite Steely Dan song.
So true! How can anyone pick?
For me it Aja
Its those instrument's that are so great
Peg. The bass. From Aja.
It really is.
Yep, we got Jamels shoulder's moving before the lyrics even started.
IMHO, there is no such thing as a bad Steely Dan song.
I agree 100%.
Truth
Wow never got into Steely Dan, but this made me want to explore them all the way!
That whole album is great

4:10 as a guitarist, this is literally orgasmic. The level of precision to get that exact tone and harmonics...ugh its so good
I’m totally feeling that...but Drew Zinggs’s solo on the Alive In America version is quite thrilling as well!
Exactly!! One second of "guitar heaven"!! How the h**l did he do that???

Haha! Jamal you really do get it. Been with Steely since Day 1 in 1970
The guitar solo gotta be one of the best ever - by any band! Awesome!!! The whole album "Royal Scam" is a masterpiece!
That beat was provided by the one, the only Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, the same brother you heard smokin' on "Home At Last" and "Babylon Sisters."
@Joe Day: Oh Ah Oh Oh Oh Ah...
the smooth and hypnotic Pretty Purdie...timeless!
Babylon sisters aka the Purdue Shuffle
Can I get a "Hell Yeah!" for Denny Dias and Eliott Randall laying down two of the sweetest guitar solos EVAR?!
No one else on the planet sounds like Denny Dias!
A BIG hell yeah!
That groove is Bernard Purdie. One of the great session drummers of all time.
@dave yardbird...Shuffle Baby!
You said one thing we all say about Steely Dan. "It just gets better."
Brilliant track. One of my first favorite Steely Dan tracks.

The Royal Scam had their darkest lyrics and darkest characters, and was their jazziest album so far by 1976.
Oh man the look in YOUR eye when the last guitar solo just went into space: I'm in tears bro
That groove could go on forever as far as I'm concerned! Musical perfection, as usual!

It's Funny when folks think Steely Dan is a guy in the group and not the entire band name. Same with Jethro Tull.. Dig your channel man! Rock on!
Isn't Steely Dan a dildo from a William S. Burroughs novel? He's shaped like a guy, I guess.....
