George Strait brought traditional country back to the radio in the 80s. He also holds the record for most number 1 songs of any artist in any genre at 60 number 1's. He is also the only artist in any genre to have a top 10 hit every year for 30 years running. A class act for sure. He and his wife lost a daughter in a car wreck in 1986.
George Strait has more than just "a number" of country music classics. George has more #1 hits, currently 60, than ANY other artists from any other genre.
@deanbrunner261 Dolly wrote and recorded it in 1973 for Porter Wagoner, and released as a single in 1974. It hit #1 in 1974 and again in 1982. Whitney covered it in 1992.
I believe the first television appearance of Bob Dylan was on The Johnny Cash Show. I saw a show about Johnny. They told the story or first time he met Bob. It was at Sun Records and Johnny didn't know who he was but Bob was a fan. It started a friendship between them.
Along with his lovely wife June Carter Cash, who was a country music legend in her own right and a member of the Carter Family, one of the earliest commercially successful country music acts in the 1920s and 30s.
Dolly wrote and originally sang "I Will Always Love You." Whitney covered it. Dolly sang it with much more emotion, like she was really hurting over losing someone. Whitney was just loud.
Houston overdid the song, she was known for doing that. Dolly's much simpler performance carried so much honest, genuine emotion and hurt. But then, Dolly's a FAR better singer than Houston ever was.
It hurts my heart at how many youngins have never heard his wonderful yodely voice. I have watched so many of these reactors to this video and so many have never heard of most of the greats. And when they inevitably respond no to having heard of Hank, my heart hurts for them all.He was the OG GOAT. Jr carved his own place beside his dad as well.
Anyone who hasn't heard Cline's 'Crazy' - must do AND def see the 80s biopic "Sweet Dreams" about her life. There you go, something for your movie channel and something for your music channel
....Dolly cried the night she had to turn down Elvis(well, turned down Col. Parker -Elvis' mgr)...she said at the time she so wanted to hear Elvis sing. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU.
You could also check out some of the movies written about some of these stars. For example: "Walk the Line" (Johnny Cash) or "Coal Miner's Daughter" (Loretta Lynn).
It’s strange to me to see Merle Haggard again.. you see, I’m 70, and my ma used to waitress in a country bar in Bakersfield California, where he sang on weekends before he was famous.. Buck Owens sang there too before HE was famous. Nice seeing him again. Love Grandma Debbie
Merle Haggard is my favorite country singer. I was lucky enough to meet him a few times and got to see him perform live 14 times. He is a legend in country music.
You need to check out George Jones' song "He Stopped Loving Her Today", voted Best Country Music song a few years back. Warning: better get out the tissues!
I remember hearing that song when I was 8 or 9 years old. An older relative had recently died and I had witnessed the wreath hanging as mentioned in the song. I remember realizing what the song was about and tearing up. 40-odd years later and it still gets me.
You need to hear Dolly Parton sing "Coat of Many Colors" on "The Porter Wagoner Show" in 1971. It was a song she wrote about an incident from her childhood. NBC broadcast a tv movie about it called "Coat Of Many Colors". It's my favorite song of hers. She's my favorite country singer. I even have a Dolly Parton license plate on my car.
Crystal Gayle "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue?" She was Loretta Lynns baby sister. Beautiful woman, absurdly long hair and a one-of-a-kind voice you'll know immediately once you've heard it. Millie: Listen To Patsy Cline's stuff. You'll love her. Loretta Lynn too, to be fair.
Patsy Cline has a good line up you should react to. I Fall To Pieces, Walkin' After Midnight, and Crazy are probably her top three most popular. Also to add, songs were slightly shorter than ones today, so you may be able to squeeze two songs in one video
My favorite country musician is Waylon Jennings. I recommend you check out "It's Not Supposed To Be That Way, "Dreaming My Dreams, " and "Luckenbach, Texas."
Can you hear George Jones - 500,000 names. It's about the Vietnam wall. My poor father passed away in that country and it always makes me tear up so much!!!
Merle Haggard was in San Quentin Prison when Johnny Cash performed there and he said in an interview .. I want to do that job right there and he and Johnny became very good friends
Whitney was born in 1963. Dolly wrote I Will Always Love You in 1973. One of the great quotes ever is when someone asked Dolly how she felt about Whitney’s cover being so famous to which Dolly replied you go girl, she’s making me a lot of money.
Kenny Rogers should've been on here. At least on honorable mention. Do Islands in the Stream (Live) Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers (duet). George Strait - Check Yes or No (I think Millie will like it) Loretta Lynn - Coal Miner's Daughter (This is a must, if you want to know what country music is) Kenny Rogers - The Gambler Dolly Parton - Coat of Many Colors Hank William's Jr. - A Country Boy Can Surrvive The list can go on and on and on Those are some of my favorites
All of them are worth checking out (plus many more)! And yes, Dolly wrote and performed "I Will Always Love You" long before Whitney covered it. I think she has written over 5000 songs. And, "Crazy" was written by Willie Nelson and popularized by Patsy Cline (he is a great songwriter too). Some are better rabbit holes than others, but just start reacting to some of them on your other channel and we will chip in our opinions. Peace, Love!!
These snippets just don't give a true sense of how good these are. Some of these artists have years of hits to look through. Like any star, there are songs that are way above others.
The Johnny Cash Show was an American television music variety show that was hosted by Johnny Cash. The Screen Gems 58-episode series ran from June 7, 1969, to March 31, 1971, on ABC;
Dolly has written over 3,000 songs for herself AND others including 'I will always love you' and sang that before Whitney was born. I saw Dolly an interview in which she said that when EmmyLou Harris recorded her song "To daddy" she opens a bank account and that after Whitney sang 'I will always love you" she bought the bank! LOL
Yes, you all would very much enjoy discovering the OGs of country. Not that new country singers don’t bring something to the table, but the older stuff has a closure relationship to the roots of country. Worth becoming familiar with.
Loretta Lynn was a national treasure. My favorite song of hers came later in her life. “I Miss Being Mrs. Tonight” She recorded it after her husband of 48 years died.
Dolly Parton is an American icon. She not only sang, but she writes most of her song I Will Always Love You is one Whitney Houston made famous, but Dolly wrote this song and performed it way before Whitney. And Dolly got a royalty for each time Whitney’s version sold. Hank Williams is, for me, the first singer of record who popularized country music.
An early, struggling songwriter named Willie Nelson wrote an early hit for Patsy Cline called “Crazy”. The Beezleys should do a reaction video to Patsy’s rendition. It’s lovely!
Dolly Parton wrote the song " I Will Always Love You" for the movie Best Little Whorehouse In Texas in which she was one of the main actors alongside Burt Reynolds.
I will always love you was a dolly Parton song. Whitney Houston renewed it and that's why it so popular today. Tbh I didn't even know dolly sang that song. I'm just so used to hearing Whitney Houston singing it
Dolly actually said "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap!" She said her look is meant to look like the town tramp. She also called her chest "weapons of mass distraction."
Merle Haggard Johnny Cash performed at San Quentin State Prison in 1958 while Merle Haggard was an inmate there. Johnny Cash sang his song "Folsom Prison Blues" (1956) and "had a profound influence on Merle Haggard, who upon release set out on forging a career as a singer-songwriter". Haggard was released from San Quentin on parole in 1960. After being released, he managed to turn his life around and launched a successful country music career.
Johnny Cash had a funny song called "One Piece At A Time". The story was told that guy was working on the assembly line for Cadillac, or "Caddy" for short. He wanted a Caddy, and took a piece of a Cadillac every year from 1949 to 1973. The real-life version is out there with Cash in the Caddy!
Someone already suggested it, but I'd recommend Coat of Many Colors written and sung by Dolly Parton. The story in the song is about Dolly as a young girl growing up in Tennessee and tugs at the heartstrings.

Hank Williams has a son (Hank Williams Junior), grandson (Hank Williams III, who is named Shelton), and great-grandson (Coleman Williams or IV), who all recorded music that you can check out. But guys like Shelton do country, punk rock, and heavy metal.
Dolly wrote and sang I Will Always Love You in the early 1970s. Whitney Houston covered it for the movie The Bodyguard in 1992. They really almost sound like different songs.
