Scarily I’ve drawn a similar conclusion. But..I personally find it crazy the first single released from each of the last 3 TooL albums has seemingly been about something that actually happened AFTER the songs were written. Schism from Lateralus came out just a few months prior to 9/11. At this point most know the lyrics to the song but a “schism” is a split or division between strongly opposed sections or parties, caused by difference in opinion or belief. . Vicarious from 10,000 Days came out a couple months prior to the Mumbai Train terror attacks and while Iraq was plunging into chaos and just before Sadaam Hussein was hanged. Fear Inoculum comes out just as COVID-19 is becoming very real here in the U.S.

This has been one of my favorites for a long time. Together with Stinkfist which revolves around a related theme.
The lyrics leave less room for thinking than other Tool songs, sure. But that's ok tho. Sometimes I don't seek inspiration but just want to know that someone shares my lament.

I think it also helps quite a bit to contextualize the lyrics and the albums based on Maynard’s life and where he was at that point of his life... before Maynard got into Tool, he was really into LA’s comedy stand-up scene (Thats also why you still always have ‘comedy sketches’ and dark humor on most albums) Opiate, Undertow and Aenima are a young Maynard, furious and confused at his Mom’s health condition and her faith (And her church’s behavior towards her ) evangelical religion, his relationship with his StepFather, life in Los Angeles etc, and you can clearly hear his “middle finger” to all those things in those first 3 records.
Lateralus is Maynard trying to make sense of things, quite a bit of it through the lens of other ‘faiths’, particularly Eastern Religions and their mystic beliefs, ... not to mention deeply empathizing with his Mom’s pain and beginning to understand her deep Faith.... his most positive album I think, lyrically speaking. Maynard’s said on interviews he’s not an Atheist, he believes in “something’’, just not organized religion, which he clearly dislikes.
10000 Days is his mourning/acceptance record and all the complex emotions that brings with it... 2 of his most amazing lyrics are in this album, followed by some songs that are almost nihilistic in nature, which makes perfect sense with all the turmoil that comes with the feeling of loss when a loved ones dies.
Fear Inoculum... older Maynard, also an “accepting’ older man looking back at his life... to me this album feels like the ‘spiritual’ sequel to Lateralus.

The news on tv, magazines and newspapers have had a credo since the beginning- if it bleeds it leads. Human nature? Spoon fed until addicted? Or have we, as humans, adopted this credo and have come to believe it’s all a part of life?? The song is a deep dive into the psyche?

  • @Brandon_Beaty

In the my opinion, it's a reflection on human nature. It goes back to newspaper times of, "If it bleeds, it leads." That is, it's front page news. When you look at the sensational newspapers during the "Jack the Ripper" murders and many other examples throughout history including photographers immortalizing murder scenes from the old west to the back rooms and alleyways of big cities.
When you speak to military people that have been in one of their first violent engagements survivors may tell you it was extremely exhilarating and they felt very alive after such a close encounter with death. They may also have "survivors remorse" if commrades were lost. The kind of feeling, "Why them and not me?"
Not everyone will be on the front lines of battle or crime scenes, so they peer into the darkness and violence and perhaps feel lucky it was not them accommodated by television and film. Vicariously living through those experiences.
It seems to also reflect on the fact a desensitization takes place. The first time you see a murder your stomach turns. After a while you crave this stimulation. A junky looking for a fix of flowing blood and hearing the death rattle of someone who is for all intents and purposes dead, but their body fights to continue on with the final agonal breaths. Perhaps accompanied by the sounds of clapping wet flesh or bubbling if their chest cavity has been pierced.
Obviously, lots of room for interpretation and contemplation there. I certainly don't claim to fully understand or have all the answers, but the lyrics conjured up those thoughts and opinions.
All the best. I continue to enjoy your discussions!

I would like to add my view to analysis of this lyrics. I might be completely wrong, but from my side it's quite straight forward.. If Vicarious is "experienced in the imagination through the feelings or actions of another person".. then I guess that it was used in this song in context some kind of subconscious ?need? of watching somebody else suffering (maybe that's why horror genre exist..) just to watch what would happen to me if I was in that "unpleasant situation".. For example.. I don't need to get stabbed to understand how unpleasant it would be if it happened to me. It's more than enough to see somebody else experience that moment to get some kind of confirmation that this is definitely not something what I would like to experience.. and I should avoid that in all costs. That's where fears come to life. This also brings adrenaline and in some cases it might be only situation when people feels alive again (Johnny Cash/NiN - Hurt).. I am sure that is what last two lines are:
Vicariously I, live while the whole world dies
    Much better you than I
Which also grasp a point of living.. not dying. Evolution is based on idea of not dying before spreading own genetic information.. So nature some kind supports this behavior. Learning from suffering of others.. to prevent own suffering/possible death..
From my point of view.. most impressive part of lyrics is:
The universe is hostile. so Impersonal. devour to survive.
So it is. So it's always been.
Which just describes state as it is.. suddenly putting all morality and religions out of equation.. Universe is really hostile and impersonal.. it doesn't care about us.. it was nothing personal against dinosaurs.. and just as randomly some day it will also get rid of us..
Thanks and keep up the good work!
PS: from which country are you comming from?

Ever been to a concert or show where they phoned it in? You just don’t enjoy it. When performers go deep and bring out severe pain and emotion and work through those issues right in front of you on a stage we call it a hell of a performance. We love seeing suffering even when we don’t realize it. You slow down at wrecks because deep down you want to see a body. UFC is popular for a reason. Maynard is explaining why tool is so successful.

  • @YLS8763

I feel like in this song, Maynard is angrily mocking the nonchalantness of people watching others face tragedy and loss, through a screen for entertainment, while they sit cozy at home not having to personally experience it.
At the same time though, it feels there’s a certain duality to this song. like it has a double message. One seems to be about the frustration with human nature, and then at the end of the song, it seems as though the protagonist (maynard) has reached a sort of apathetic acceptance. Take a look at these lyrics:
“Credulous at best your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men. Pull your head on out your hippy haze and give a listen, I shouldn’t have to say it all again.”
He’s acknowledging the fact that everyone seems to have this morbid sense of entertainment or fulfillment from tragic events, including himself. However at the same time, throughout the whole song, it feels like he’s struggling with whether he should confront that fact or accept it.
“The universe is hostile, so impersonal. Devour to survive, so it is, so it’s always been.
We all feed on tragedy, it’s like blood to a vampire.
Vicariously I, live while the whole world dies, much better you than I.”

10:18 Vicarious means to live through another person. So in this instance, its talking about how we vicariously enjoy the suffering and pain of others at a safe distance through our televisions. Though that was when this song was made, it now applies to our phones and computers as well and not as much the T.V. but the principle is the same.
When you get really happen that your kid excelled at something you wanted to do when you were younger, like a sport for example or maybe fulfilling your college dreams you didn't do, thats living vicariously through your child. Well this is just in a more abstract sense of how people in society live vicariously through others, specifically in our lust for violence in this case without the ability to admit that we lust for violence. Its part of who we our, its in our nature and not being able to recognize that means that our nature will control our subconscious instead of the other way around.
"Vicariousllyyy IIIIIII, live while the whole world diiiiieeeesssss. Why can't we just admit it, why can't we just admit it..."
Btw you should watch the music videos at some point. They arn't hugely important to understand the metaphors, they do help a little bit. They are just pretty cool pieces of art in themselves.

  • @davideldridge9021

The jist of the song is that humans inherently gravitate toward tragedy rather than what is good. Even though we don't really want to wish it on anyone we secretly need it. People tend to make sure they watch the news when there is a story of suffering and tragedy. As we don't want it to happen to us we need to see it happen to others as to feel better about ourselves.

I do not see any reference to his mother. If you look at how he writes about his mother, he does not see her negatively. The song is a criticism of society, and the living of life through the TV, such as news programming and "reality TV." People are fascinated by the news, particularly tragic news. An old adage in the news business (and it is a business, these days) is, "If it bleeds it leads." You have news programming proper, then TV shows like Cops, that do best in terms of ratings when there is a disaster or a gruesome crime to report. "No news is good news." This isn't even a matter of hypocrisy, really, as there is no "Do as I say not as I do" in how people view and discuss television. The underlying criticism is that people are not living their own lives, substituting TV programming for living lives themselves. The have stopped really thinking about what they are seeing, too, being fascinated by what they see rather than feeling actual sympathy of empathy. They express shock and excitedly discuss what they have see with "friends" but cannot think for a moment about the suffering, the tragedy involved, or even of being capable of revulsion sufficient for them to turn away. It should also be noticed that the lyrics are in the first-person, so that he is not excusing himself.
This voyeurism isn't new, but the extent certainly is. In past generations more time would be consumed by dealing with the day-to-day details of living. Yet, you had bare-fist boxing, bear-baiting, cock fighting, bull fighting, public executions and going back even further to gladiatorial contests. While we are not as blood-thirsty as past generations, we make up for it with the volume of our vicarious consumption of disaster and tragedy.
As an aside, you remind me of two Finnish sisters I knew in college. The resemblance verges on the spooky, though you are not a "twin" of either.

The irony of the first track Vicarious is that it’s tone is quite heavy and critical, yet nearly the whole album is the listeners vicarious experience through Judith and Meynard’s journey from his childhood, through her 10,000 day ordeal, culminating with her ascension , his reflections on their relationship, and his relationship to himself and his maker. So Tool of them to mock us yet take us by the hand and lead us on a hero’s journey.

22:04 no, its not how humanity behaves. Its how LIFE behaves. All of it. It as fundamental if not more so than the love that also comes out of life. Those creatures without it very rapidly perish, thats the rule of nature. Its the cosmic joke.
We humans just think of ourselves as masters of the land and better angels of our own being, arrogant enough to think we're above other life and nature itself.

to be fair with the girl listening to the song, this album is less focused in terms of storytelling. "10,000 Days" is definitely a reference to Maynard's mother, so it makes sense to try and connect Vicarious to the meaning of the album title at first, but just like a couple more tracks, I don't think they're connected, maybe at a more universal theme. unlike the Lateralus album, not every song in here refers to the 10,000 days arc.
don't get me wrong: 10,000 Days is a great album, but it isn't as well rounded as previous in that regard. songs feel much more separated from each other, each on their own is amazing, but as a whole it's not as tight as Lateralus, Tool's masterpiece imo.

I've come to realize that he's referencing that YOU the listener will throughout parts of this album vicariously experience the singers sorrows about the condition and loss of his mother. In the end of the song it seems like he offers you permission to be a voyeur to his tragedy later in the album... like he and everyone else does when consuming media.

So to me...i feel like your sense that there is a subliminal reference to his mother under the straightforward aspect of the lyrics is well placed.

I think it's a shame you might miss the effect this song has on the beginning of the next song on the album. This song ends with crazy aggression then before you have any time to really recover, Jambi starts with more fire and smacks you in the face with crazy rhythm.

It’s an unusual song for me. In the beginning of the song I feel like he is pointing out our societal short comings but then in the end he talks about how the universe is hostile and that’s normal. So I feel like he is justifying our behavior in the end.

I think Maynard writes lyrics in such a way that they can be ambiguous and interpreted in a number of ways. There is no right or wrong breakdown of his words, it just stimulates interesting discussions

The universe is hostel so impersonal: the nature of the universe is the strongest survive , the divine is not “emotionally involved “ the ALL transcends good and evil. Evil is a human concept .
