To this day, I consider Tuomas Holopainen one of the greatest song writers in history. His technical level is incredible. It deserves to be praised for how unique and beautiful it is. Poet is still the most emotionally impactful song I've heard in my 42 years on this earth. It's not something you blast consistently on the stereo day in and day out, but it is a pure work of art. You can feel the despair in the early acts before transitioning to pure hope in what the future may hold. So damn good.
Still my favorite band of all time. Their early tracks got me thru Iraq in 03-05. That little CD player let me escape reality for a few moments every day. Once Floor joined them it literally seemed like 'destiny awakened' and they were the best they'd ever been.

I interpretation is The 1st two words of the song are "The End" representing the end of Nightwish with Tarja, The last two words of the song are "The Beginning" representing the start of a new era of Nightwish. ALSO Floor just put out her 1st solo single named "FIRE" you got to check it out its Fire

A masterpiece for sure. Tuomas’ genius on full display with Floor taking it to another level, even taking on movement 3, The Pacific, which originally sung by the choir boy that did the first movement. To me, movement 5, Mother and Father, is one of the greatest pieces of music written in my lifetime. Keep enjoying Nightwish!

Thank you for doing a reaction respectfully, with knowledge of the deep darkness beneath the beauty of this opus.
Just a couple facts for you: Nightwish has only performed this live a dozen or so times...(and Floor really brings everyone to tears with her emotional delivery). Each time, Tuomas has the vocal.feed to his in-ear monitors turned off bc the song, even 10yrs on, is just too emotionally painful. Not to forget, that both Emppu and Marko went thru this with him...thus, they gather around the keyboard in support of their friend.
The voice of the opening soprano and spoken word parts are performed by a young boy named Guy Elliott.
One.more thought to share... the philosophy of Nightwish, and (The Army) fan base is one of humanity, empathy, and kindness. When you.really take that...seriously...into your heart, your being, you being to project that out to the world. Nightwish can be life-changing! Remember all, kindness is free

I’m amazed you both haven’t watched this before now. It’s one of the Nightwish essentials!
17:39 “Try to save them all, bleed no more” - Tuomas’ heartache is still written all over his face how he felt / still feels about this time in his life . This show at Wembley was 9 years later.

And to think, that this is actually part of the trilogy of songs dealing with the fallout of Tarja's departure. Tuomas split the issue into 3 songs: Bye Bye, Beautiful, which is his goodbye song/letter to Tarja, The Poet and the Pendulum, which is his response to the fans from all of the backlash he received from letting Tarja go, and then Master Passion Greed, which is directed at Tarja's husband/manager, Marcelo Cebuli, whom the band effectively blamed for the change in Tarja, which led to her dismissal.
Bye Bye Beautiful was only performed a handful of times during Anette's time in the band, and will never be played again; Floor refuses to sing that song, because she is good friends with Tarja (fun fact: when asked to join the band fulltime, Floor asked Tarja for her permission to do so). Master Passion Greed will never be played live, because everyone is over the emotions that brought this on. Marco is friends with Tarja. Emppu is friends with Tarja. Floor is as well. Tuomas and Tarja communicate amicably concerning business. So it's safe to say that the only ones who still bring this up are the fans. To my knowledge, this performance at Wembley was the last time this song was played live.
I will say this: If you want to see an angry Tuomas (read: Nightwish on the angry pills), react to Master Passion Greed. that is their heaviest song. As I said above, it has never been nor ever will be played live, so the studio track is all you're going to have. Have a react to that to see another side of Nightwish that you have never seen.

What slays me about this song, isn't just the lyrics or the singing, but the exquisite orchestration, elements of solo cello, being used in its mot sobering and sorrowful ranges, followed by the blast of wind (mainly trombones and low horns, stabbed by higher strings in the more dramatic sections). Then the solo oboe comes in at the end, just rips your heart apart, just to make you feel worse, then the higher strings come in playing that lush counter melody, just in case you are not already in pieces. This song never fails to bring me to tears.
If I ever got the chance to play alongside Nightwish as a violinist my life would be complete.

"I cannot cry cuz the shoulder cries more"
Is the quintessential definition of being a man.
You have to be strong when others cant.
I believe it's ment in a different manner here, Tuomas felt he was the cause of this pain so he had no right to seek comfort from his friends as they were equally or more sad.
But there is still that truth underneath it.
Mad props to Tony Kakko, the singer of Sonata Arctica, who convinced Tuomas to not disband Nightwish.
Without him being such a massive support pillar to Tuomas during his most trying times, we would not have Nightwish today.

Tony refuses to accept credit, all he says is he's glad their walk helped.
Nightwish fans leave that tid bit out.

Actually that was at the time they fired Sami Vänskä from the band in 2001 (because of his bad attitude and musical disagreement). This is direct quote from wikipedia:
"Later, Holopainen confessed that, at that time, he seriously started thinking about breaking Nightwish up. After a gig in Russia, he sent a text message to fellow musician Tony Kakko of metal band Sonata Arctica, telling him that he did not think he had a band any longer, and asking him what plans he had for next year.[20] After Nightwish's last gig for the Over the Hills and Far Away tour in 2001, Holopainen called their labels Drakkar and Spinefarm, unofficially declaring Nightwish was over. He told them he might produce another album, but he'd never perform another show with the band. The same message was also written on the band's message board.
Straight after the last gig, Holopainen went on a week-long hiking trip to Lapland with Tony Kakko. During the hiking trip, they talked about the band and Holopainen decided he could not break up Nightwish that easily. When he returned from Lapland he immediately received a phone call from Ewo Pohjola, CEO of Spinefarm, offering himself to become their manager and help him straighten things up, and Holopainen agreed.
To continue with Nightwish, Holopainen decided some changes were in order. Beside choosing Ewo as their new manager, he also asked Vänskä to leave the band. He would later cite musical differences as another reason for the breakup. Marko Hietala (Tarot) was asked to replace Vänskä, effectively leaving his previous band, Sinergy. In addition to playing bass guitar, Hietala would also perform male vocals. Holopainen has since said publicly that he and Vänskä still keep in touch, contrary to rumours saying that they have not met since. However, they are not interested in making another project together."

But that quote doesn't give Tony too much credit. I remember that I've read somewhere, that it really was Tony, who convinved Tuomas, that he should not give up so easily, and throw away all the good things they have with Nightwish.

initially thought this was a one time only, just for their 1st ever time at Wembley. was a regular feature throughout the European leg of the tour. saw several fan shot clips from all over. every time, no matter where, no matter how often, end of the first verse, Emppu was Right There, checking on Tuomas. Emppu loves his bandmates. new or OG. he was right next to Floor her first show in Seattle. he and Kai were instantly BFF's. first time you see Troy at Wacken for "Nemo", Emppu's the first one to welcome him to the stage. at the Virtual show, he and Jukka were vibing together.

I love the relationship Emppu has with the whole band on stage (and off obviously) I especially like the friendship he has with Troy, the pair of them are always supporting each other. Emppu is as quick to throw the horns to Troy as he is to pull faces when Troy drops a note on his low whistle. They are often giggling like naughty schoolboys. The relationship between a Finnish metal guitarist and an English folk musician seems so unlikely at first but, for me, sums up the whole ethos of the band and the fan base.

Thanks for another great reaction to another great song. I love your channel. This is an extremely emotional song. I love how Tuomas borrowed ideas from "The Pit and The Pendulum", a short story written in 1842 by Edgar Allan Poe. The story deals with the psychological torment of a prisoner in the Spanish Inquisition who is publicly tortured and executed for opposing the Catholic Church. He finds himself in a dark room full of rats with slippery sloped floors leading to a Pit and a swinging Pendulum overhead. The Pit signifies Death, the Pendulum represents Time and the sloped floors, rats and darkness symbolise Fear.
The protagonist of the story opposed the Catholic Church as he was angry with God for taking away his birth mother, adopted mother and wife with plague and disease.
I wonder if Toumas's anguish was caused NOT because he fired Tarja (the original singer) from the band, but because he felt publicly tortured and judged by his so-called fans for doing it the way he did. I believe the score was arranged into 5 separate acts to represent the 5 stages of grieving. Greetings from England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

One thing you'll enjoy going back and watching that demonstrates again Tuomas's genius is the second time the child is narrating the poem, he gets to the part that says "3 minutes and counting", from there to when Tuomas makes the slashing motion across his own throat is almost precisely three minutes. The two of you did an excellent job....once you know the backstory, the song doesn't need much explanation!
Those of us who have suffered from depression can understand the song....but they also need to see that depression can be overcome! Tuomas overcame his by writing this song where he is killed in the song instead of in real life!
I tried drinking myself to death, by becoming an alcoholic, and didn't know how to dig myself out of it. In 1999, July 30....I decided no more! 22 years, 7 months and 26 days I have been sober. It was hard at the beginning, but I didn't give up on myself!
If the two of you want another really awesome song...try Disturbed's "A Reason To Fight"

Nightwish was started by Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja, their first singer. In 2005, after the recording of the "End of an era" dvd Tarja was fired thru a letter given to her by Tuomas, but it was a band decision. The letter was also posted on the bands homepage at the same time. Marko had told Tuomas "It's me or her". This song is about the aftermath thru Tuomas eyes. A piece in five parts.
    1. White lands of Empathica.: Boy soprano (Guy Elliot). "The end, the songwriter's dead, the blade fell upon him" It's the end of an era, Tuomas feels dead inside, he was the one that handed Tarja the letter. The white lands of Emphatica is a place in Stephen Kings "Dark Tower" series.
    2. Home: "A poet without a rime, a widowed writer torn apart by the chains of hell" Tuomas got writers block, he's lost his musical "wife", his muse, and was fighting depression and doubt. "My home was there and then, those meadows of heaven. Adventure filled days one with every smiling face" The bands beginning, before the troubles started.
3 The Pacific: "On the shore, se sat and hoped under the same pale moon who's guiding light chose you, chose you all" If I remember it right Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja was having a barbecue at night when they decided to start a band together. The operatic part Floor sings was originally sung by the same boy soprano who sings the intro. When Floor joined she told Tuomas that she could sing that. He decided to keep the intro but let Floor sing that part.
The spoken words are read by a boy named Tom Williams. Both him and Guy Elliot were members of Reigate St Mary's Choir School.
    4. Dark passion play: This is about the reactions from fans and media where everyone blamed Tuomas even tho it was a band decision. He was ripped apart, even the Finnish prime minister had an opinion.
    5. Mother and Father: Tuomas took refuge at his parents house for a while, these are some of the things they told him during that time.
Tuomas was inspired by the short story "The pit and the pendulum" by Edgar Allen Poe when he wrote this masterpiece.
The first words are "The end", the last words are "The beginning". It's the end of an era and the start of a new.
When you see Marko and Emppu close to Tuomas at the end it's a thing they have thet started when this song was new. Tuomas feelings where still raw so they supported him at the end of the song. Tuomas had chosen to have Anettes song cut out of the mix in his earpiece at the shows. This was 11 years after the events, so he's mostly over it now

Beautiful reaction guys!! This song is one of my favorites to watch people react to because it can be very impactful. I’m so glad he decided to put his pain in his art and not actually hurt himself otherwise we wouldn’t have such magical journeys to take along with these guys. Have an amazing day you two! I love you guys.

He goes into poetry, not fantasy.
Fantasy is dragons, mermaids and demon and stuff.
Rhapsody of Fire and Edguy are fantasy metal.
    Tuomas uses poetry.
Painting a vivid picture with beautiful words and emotional analogies instead of telling it straight forward but the story is still real, not fantasy.

i like to picture my floor jansen as alice's assain in resident evil, when that nemisis beast is prowling alice calls upon floor, she whips out her mic starts singing part 3 or 5 and its head explodes killing all mutant zombies in a 10 mile radius she is a magnificent beast, and young lady its not healthy to resist a cleansing floorgasm from our 6' dutch valkyrie queen, whoever saw this live hit a lottery jackpot, they don't perform it anymore and marko retired, i'm 60 and can't get enough of this band, it would be so awesome if they played the coachella open air festival cuz NW in the cali desert nightsky with our weed=the best night ever, heck i'd kick paris hilton's skinny butt out the way to get upfront

Someone mentions backstory of this song. When Tuomas (keyboardist & founder of Nightwish) was still at his school for music back in 1996. He and original vocalist, Tarja were classmates and friends at that school in Finland. This is the time when he created Nightwish. Before Tuomas created the band, he didn't like Rock Music. His passion was classical music. Then one of his friends took Tuomas to a Rock concert. I believed concert GNR. Tuomas loved the concert. Tuomas wanted to blend Rock with Classical for the new band. His creation, Nightwish, Symphonic Metal band was founded in 1996. Everything was going good until 2005. I think Tarja's manager causing issues with band. I believed manager is her husband too. It gotten so bad that Tarja either was fired or quit the band in 2005. Many Nightwish fans blamed Tuomas for her departure. He gotten into major depression. So bad, that he put Nightwish on hiatus from 2005 to 2007. Tuomas went thru a lot since Tarja's exit. Then in 2007, He regrouped Nightwish with a new vocalist named Anette Olzon. She sang for about 5 years with Nightwish. Late 2012, she left the band. Then our favorite vocalist, Floor Jansen was hired as a touring vocalist for band's 2013's tour (This is where Floor sings Ghost Love Score at 2013's Wacken). In a nutshell, Tuomas committed suicide musically metaphorically! Did both of you seen Emppu and Marko walked over to Tuomas at the end of song? They are virtually giving him moral support

awesome reaction. This piece has a very special place in my life. I know the back story but this piece is also an anthem for those people with mental health issues such as depression with suicidal thoughts, Yep I am one of those! Also in the Pit and the Pendulum Poe talks about the point at which you both give up hope and accept the end, which you really get the sense of in this.
If I may I would like to give you my interpretation of the lyrics and what they mean to me.
The first part, which you note starts with the words the end!! Is taken from Stephen Kings Tower series, the white lands were the home of a type of vampire that fed on emotions, (empathy), so a person left feeling nothing, empty and without emotion.
In the second part, those lines expressing a feeling of futility, all same old same old yet, hating how you feel, then the verse seems to express the effort of trying to pretend to be ok, hence those two faces, one for everyone else and the real one that is private, no one to turn to for help as the people around you seem as upset as you so no shoulder to cry on so you just carry on pretending becoming that whore for the cold world. Then there is the remembering back to when all was good, yet you cannot get there despite everyone telling you “you are ok, it will be fine” till those words just sink you even further into the mess.
Then we have the Pacific, oh wow, the wishing and planning stage, the beautiful sea, just wishing it was over, that you could be under the waves, beneath the pain tucked into that beauty., last goodnight kiss and a valentine that ends everything.
Then that part that starts with being afraid, being raped, not in the traditional sense but feeling violated, alone and bloody scared, For Tuomas, feeling that those who he felt should have been there for him somehow betrayed him, a not uncommon feeling with severe depression, feeling that even life betrayed you, also again the mention of the tide and drowning, many see it as the perfect death!
On a side note here, three minutes and counting, yep exactly three minutes to the point that Tuomas simulates the blade.
Here also note how the music becomes chaotic, mirroring the thought process of someone planning their own death, no logic, well there is but only to the individual. Yet also a sense of excitement and of a journey, proceeding the calm.
Then the passion play, traditionally passion plays were performed at Easter and were about the death of Christ, and Tuomas plays with us a little here, “second robber to the right of Christ! Well at the crucifixion there was only one robber either side of Christ but in the painting The Last Supper the person second to the right of Christ is Judas!!!!!
Then of course the symbolic death and the slowing faltering heartbeat.
The beginning or last part of the piece are the words that brought Tuomas back from the edge. In his case words from his parents but many of us will have people who were there at just the right time and who cared enough to be the rock and love us enough to hold on.
If there is a message in this work surely it is to be kind, to look out for each other and if you can be there, you never know you may just save a person’s life. As someone did mine.

I wonder how many of the audience in Wembley noticed what came over them: A once-in-a-lifetime experience. Tuomas will not play it anymore.. He is done with the issue and can't live it again.

Yes...it was so deep for him....made three songs about the issue on the Dark Passion Play album. So great that he made suicide here on the song instead of real...and did not end NW.
