Starliner crewed risks 2 lives, (At a minimum, only one astronaut should be "risked.") unscrewed, and they could end up deorbiting the ISS in a spectacular fashion. I'm one of the original designers of the Apollo LRVs, and IM would be idiots to take over this Viper project. First, it is only designed to last for three-Moon-days. Just look at the wheels, this thing cannot even traverse a 4-degree slope (or less), as based on the Mars Rovers, without slipping, and is so top-heavy that it will fall over on a 12+degree slope. The "craters" where there might be water, have steep volcanic ejecta sides, with much steeper angles. Then chances of this machine even getting halfway down, without tipping over, are virtually negligible. Also, since these craters are presumed to be "frozen solid", how will these mickey-mouse wheels even hold on solid rock, or frozen ice. Also there are only four wheels. You cannot take such a vehicle down crater walls, where there are 3D dissimilarities in the slopes. Any practical crawler will require a different chassis setup, and at least the usual 6-wheel bogie. We did crater-work in the 60s and 70s on this, and our vehicles were used to pull out two competing vehicles, after they became entrapped into "fake craters" which were created for this same purpose. That history is well known and has several books written about it. Making wheels which work on rocks is a major difficulty and the 4WD guys who go out into the mountains realize this. The Viper vehicle will only work on soft dirt and flattish surfaces, and the chances of it finding any Ice inside a crater is virtually negligible. Also how the heck is it going to send out the data, when the wimpy antenna is buried in a crater, without line-of-sight. NASA would need a polar orbiter around the Moon to get Comm. That is one of their plans, and also for Mars, but it "ain't" happening soon. Whoever signed off on this project needs to be removed.

    • @brunonikodemski2420
      @brunonikodemski2420 2 місяці тому

      @@AmbientMorality Not with those wheels on rocks. These tests are always done on a soft surface (as we sometimes did) to simulate an average Moon surface. Our tests, going back to the 60's, show that this fails almost all of the time, with "non-conforming" wheels. That is why our LRV wheels are "soft", and actually conform to the rocks. Mars rovers also have this same problem. Not only are their wheels cracking (due to the glass-transition temperatures of the metals (and plastics) used, NASA is so scared to climb over anything bigger than a fist, that it selects basically sand/dust routes to get from point A to B. Viper will not be able to travel more than about a mile, if they try to travel it at 200-degrees-below-zero, in a crater. It will have to park somewhere, to await the next sunlight cycle. If that is the case, then there will be sunlight in that crater, and there will be no surface water anywhere. This design is total crap, and has absolutely no chance of finding any new data, that we already don't know about, from prior missions. What NASA needs desperately is a High-Definition Radar mapper, at down about 10-miles from the surface, to get accurate mapping of the projected actual landing site, and crater walls of where they are going to go in. OR land the lander INTO the crater, and hope there is a stable floor there (not likely). PassItOn.

    That crew would be very stupid to agree to ride that piece of crap through a reentry. If they agree to do it, I hate to say this, but, I believe they will be signing their own death warrant. Starliner is a a piece of crap and should never have been certified for human flight. NASA should be completely shut down except for a basic regulatory role, but their way to over-bureaucratic to be in the actual spaceflight business. Leave the actual spaceflight business to private companies like SpaceX. That is where the future of spaceflight resides.

    • @AmbientMorality
      @AmbientMorality 2 місяці тому

      NASA has no regulatory role. They're a science and engineering research agency. They develop rockets because there weren't commercial options historically, and I agree that more of that can become private as the commercial market grows. However, their science and exploration missions are extremely important and not something that can be replaced by private companies. NASA's engineering research and development is also extremely important.

    • @jamesbrown5600
      @jamesbrown5600 2 місяці тому

      @@AmbientMorality NASA shouldn't be anywhere near manned spaceflight. You have a much more positive view of NASA than I do. To me NASA is just an overbloated government bureaucracy. Also most of the research and development in the spaceflight industry is being done by SpaceX and other private companies. Its true most of them do use NASA test facilities because those facilities are first class, no doubt and that is fine. The private market could do what NASA does for much less money because most of them are not bloated bureaucracies thus they are able to respond to new technology and changes much faster than any government run operation like NASA can. NASA, like the Pentagon, is used as a piggy bank by members of Congress where as private companies are not because they're not controlled by Congress like NASA is.

    • @AmbientMorality
      @AmbientMorality 2 місяці тому

      @@jamesbrown5600 Hmm, two things. A major part of what NASA does is space science, and spaceflight is just a means to that end. Companies do have incentives for launch vehicle development, but a company isn't particularly likely to fund something like a space telescope or a mission to Europa.
      Second, while companies do their own research and development, they base their work off of a lot that NASA and other agencies have done. You touched on that a bit with facilities, like with SpaceX's PICA-X development. PICA-X also was developed with NASA experts working alongside SpaceX and it of course built off a NASA-developed heat shield technology.
      I think you can find NASA has financially supported research and development for nearly every space startup in the US, at least to some degree. They saved SpaceX in the early days!
      I'm ignoring the aviation side of NASA a little here. I don't think either Airbus or Boeing would do anything innovative because it's just so risky and expensive, but I think there's a valid argument that the duopoly is a large component of that.

    What nobody is saying is that Boeing is acting as a contractor, meaning they don't really do work unless they get a government contract. Why this matters is as SpaceX has demonstrated the development of man-rated spacecraft and related technologies takes years and decades, not a 5 year contract to build a specific capsule. And it doesn't help that Boeing has lost the corporate culture that's produced by people who won't cut corners on engineering.

    As a SpaceX fan, on the one hand, I note how this just underscores SpaceX’s unique and unprecedented position in the private space industry. On the other hand, it would be better for the future of space exploration if we didn’t end up with all the eggs in one basket. I want to see other successful options available, and I hope Starliner can still be one.

    Apparently the Starliner was not configured for autonomous flight and it was estimated that it would take a week to reconfigure it!
    That could have been done by now by Butch and/or Suni.
    If I was NASA, getting the two astronauts back would be the priority. Getting Space X to send up a pair of suits for Butch and Suni either with a dedicated Dragon or as part of the scheduled crew mission.
    This lets Boeing do more tests with the Starliner undocked and freeing up the airlock. Boeing can spend as long as they like doing tests as they bring Starliner back and the astronauts are certain to be returned safely.
    A dedicated Dragon would be the more expensive option maybe, but would not affect the ISS scheduling which would surely save on extra costs there. They would also have the opportunity to send up replacement supplies for what Butch and Suni have been using extra on the ISS.
    This also mean that Butch and Suni would be the first astronauts to have flown in both vehicles.

    The uncrewed return will only happen if the autonomous software can be downloaded into the Starliner's computer. Otherwise, the spacecraft will present a danger of collision with the ISS.

      I suspect this is not really true. They point it out all the time as a possibility, but given the assignment, SpaceX could easily develop a small "tug boat rocket" that would propel the capsule into a higher or lower orbit. Remember they are going to de-orbit the ISS in 2030 you only have to keep them apart for 6 years.

    Have they fixed the issues?? all the information Boeing released said Starliner could be run fully automated, the pilots could take control at any time, but did not need to, one reason given for not returning empty or manned, was that it could not undock without being manned, the remote system did not work and needed someone to undock??
