When rolling, try keeping the stick within your fingers as part of the grip. You tend to do what a lot of people do and drive the strikes from your index finger and thumb, the butt of the stick is lifted and your last three fingers are completely released and away from the sticks. You lose all control that way and that is whynyour rolls, sound uneven. Your other three fingers give you control with the stroke. It's a bit like blast beating if you can think of it that way. The holding of the stick with thumb and index gives the strike as part of the motion with your arms and wrists and grip, as well as the pivot point for the return snaps and bounce, and the other three fingers add the level of control when the stick is moving up and down. For fast single strokes, the three fingers provide part the energy to push the stick back down to strike after it rebounds from the previous strike. It all has to e balanced and practiced slowly to get the technique perfect. Watch David play Chi in the Indigo Ranch studio session on UA-cam, and you should see the difference in how he does it and how you do it. Give it a try and I bet you'll find it a lot nicer and smoother to roll in general, and Chi will sound a tonne better.
