Here's a review of Atari's groundbreaking game, Super Breakout. This game was released in 1978 and features three game modes and a black and white monitor with plastic overlay to simulate color. This is a really cool game that is pretty historically significant. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, of Apple fame, worked on the original Breakout game that this is a sequel to.

You're already better at it than I ever was. Have fun John!
Great video. Space Invaders was released before Super Breakout, so the original was the one that inspired Space Invaders.
Super Breakout is one of my favourite 2600 games (which also has the classic mode) but I can remember this cabinet in the arcade. Lovely old machine - hard to beat paddle control. There is more to Double mode than meets the eye. Having two paddles means you can change the timing of the two balls so that they are far enough part - THEN when you hit the last brick and get a new wall , one of the balls is caught up at the top of the screen for big easy points. Tricky to do! You get double points when you have 2 balls going (and triple when in cavity mode and are juggling 3 balls.)
It was the original Breakout (which has no descending bricks) that was the influence. Space Invaders was released in Japan in June '78, Super Breakout wasn't released until Sept. '78. In fact, Midway's version was started already in August.
This genuinely helped me with my technology fair project
Ive been listening to VGO since episode one and now im listening to Arcade Outsiders! Great stuff - excellent podcast mate.
Oops! I screwed up the video and didn't drop my theme song in. ARRGH!
I just went back & watched this video again. I'm getting motivated, I'm making room in my arcade (work bench goes down, until I can find somewhere else for it), so I can make room for my 4 new pickups that I'm grabbing tomorrow: A Neo Geo 4-slot cab (with a 1-slot pcb installed??), Track & Field, Asteroids and...Super Breakout!:).
I was born in 78, I'm a Steve Jobs baby!
Cool game you got there, I think it's a good arcade for your collection especially if it's your first game you ever played. I can't remember my first arcade. Hope you figure out the monitor issue and share it with us. Can't wait for your Pac-Man vid.
Awesome I am currently working on crystal castles myself nice 1983 arcade cab but monitor is a royal pain in the behind to work with just waiting on parts to finish the cab
Yeah, I forgot to drop my theme song in there. The Pac restore is gonna happen soon! I plan to get to it this week and start releasing vids.
Nice work John, you doing the omega race repro pcb?
I think I had the same little console you just described. I was devastated when the flipper buttons for the pinball variations broke one day, and nobody could figure out why. Of course, I also played many hours of Super Breakout on the Atari 2600 in the 80s.
This damn channel has quickly become my drug.
Just found your channel and I am addicted.
Congrats on getting my favorite arcade game (although Tempest & Tac/Scan are up there). According to the pdf manual/MAME, you can configure how many balls (3 or 5), Extended Play score, etc. FYI - The Arcade Museum has a pdf of the manual.
Also the DICE emulator lets you play Breakout, and a bunch of other discrete logic games. It requires a beefy CPU though.
Any chance of you getting a Heavy Barrel arcade? That's my favorite Run N' Gun.
First post! I was waiting all day on sunday, Finally!!!!
Nice video John! :) have you seen that new Steve Jobs movie there coming out with?
Love the cabinet design. That would be a cool game to play with the paddle. I actually quite like the nostalgic charm of the fuzzy glow of the black & white monitor with the overlay - even if the monitor needs some tweaking to get there. It would look great in the dark
Very cool game. I love these kind of simple games
Thanks, bro! Jefferson has been doing other podcasts and hasn't been on VGO in sometime.
cant wait for your arcade podcast
These games would prove to be my Arkanoid training.
Breakout was my first vide game too....but not an arcade machine....I got an Atari video pinball home console way back in the day. It had 4 different video pinball games and 3 different Breakout games on it. I could roll the score on it which for Breakout was 999. I just sold that console last weekend at a garage sale we had.... Miss now that I watched this!
Very cool indeed, The barber shop my mother used to take me to had this exact game in it....Oh the memories
Cool! I never played with a mouse. That would be interesting. Does MAME have colored bars?
I am behind working on it! I will get to it this weekend!!
Very cool. Love those old B/W games. Looking forward to seeing Sprint come alive.
I love those Atari buttons, especially that serve button :)
The only thing your basement lacks is a tacky arcade style carpeting... Very nice work!
Thanks, Brendan!!!
wow second video game i played was breakout, arrow race was the first game i played it was at thrify drug store in redondo beach ca mid 70s
thats a really cool game, i haven't played it myself, but i did use play a lot of Arkanoid on the pc when i was a kid :)
I have played the shit out of "Alley Way" on the Game Boy, which is a clone of this game, with a few extras added: Scrolling bars, paddle gets smaller, bonus levels where the ball doesn't bounce off the bricks, and of course, Mario. It's a pretty fun game, and it will always be one of my favourites on the Game Boy.
I just missed out on one of these, gutted. Those WG monitors are easy to work on, I just re-used one from a Head On cab in my Space Invaders (See RGP channel Thursday). Its a V1001. Good luck with new podcast, will be dl'ing. Oh and as everyone else is saying it... PAC MAN!!
Cool game! I remember that game. (i'm an old man! lol) AWESOME NEWS thank you thank you thank you! That is the podcast I have been waiting for!
I know!!! I'll get to it this weekend! :)
Awesome Game. Simple but fun which is better than complex and boring. Plus the nostalgia for you has to be crazy considering this is the first arcade you ever played. The story about you and your friend is hilarious. It sounded like you were going to go to an abandoned jail and pretend to break out or go to like a chucky e cheese and instead of laser tag you went in to a room decorated like a jail and had to break out before your friend did.
Thanks! :)
thanks man
u got a video on the mortal kombat?
Awesome! Thanks so much!!! I hope you like it. :)
wow 35 years old now O_O
Um the john's arcade music wasn't working on the intro. i thought it was my sound for a minute but then i heard you start talking.
I was expecting a pac-man restore. Ya know i wonder if its not so much a reset as it is a restore.
Anyways keep em coming.
Midnight Caller is a possibility!!
I just had this exact model left to me. Haven't tested it yet. What would be a average price I could sell it for in working condition? Or if just for parts what could I expect. Thanks
Battle Cat It's not a super expensive game. Maybe a few hundred dollars working.
Fair enough. I got it for free so it's fine by me.. One of my favorite games growing up, really wish I had somewhere to put it, but I have no room. Nostalgic value outweighs the couple hundred I can get. But no choice in the matter. Thanks!! Awesome review
Ohh My God John Me and my sisters used to fight , playing that game... LOLOL. CLASSIC YES..
If it didn't work I'd eventually get it working! That's my goal with every pickup. Sometimes I buy PCBs or fix them myself.
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech I am AMAZED that you have an ENTIRE arcade in your basement and your garage. Where do you live?
Weird overlay on the monitor ???
somtimes simple games are the best got love it!
Ok. Random question:
While surfing online, I came across two “forgotten” arcade games: Professor Pac-Man and Warrior (from 1979).
Exactly how rare are these?? I don’t even remember Professor Pac-Man. And if I didn’t see the gameplay of Warrior on UA-cam, would have never remembered it existed.
Are these two of the Holy Grails of games to collectors?
Atari! And Discover How Far You Can Go.
Ah, man! You should have kept that! That was pre-2600!
I have a original pong :D got it for £35 anyway John I been enjoying your podcast keep up the good work. :)
No, not yet! I hear the one that is out now isn't too great.
Get a midway space invaders. Every arcade should have one.
It's coming today! I am uploading it now. :D
They are easy to find. :)
Super Breakout is awesome! Its hard even with a mouse in MAME. I've only managed 600 odd points (progressive mode)
I love arkanoid, but this is a little to simple for my taste, even though I was born in the seventies.
looking forward to arcade outsiders. bring back midnight caller!
That's a whole lot of segwaying away. Your all over the place man. Might want to put a little structure in your videos. They have alot of potential
Always hoped you would include some arcade stuff in VGO - but obviously it wouldnt fit. You know -- Kyle and Michelle..
Is Kyle dead btw?
i need to hear the music
biti biti biti biti JON'S ARCADE biti biti biti biti JON'S ARCAAAAADE
Yeah, sorry! I had a busy Sunday. I'm late!!!
All good.
Yep sure does!! Man the balls get super fast! Probably easier with a spinner
holy fuck a new podcast!?!? i cant wait! i havent listened to VGO in a while(its wubdub) i just kinda fell out of listening, im not gonna say it was because of jefferson, but it was because of jefferson lol....but i cant wait to hear the show!
No, I don't think so. I don't have an OMEGA Race!
Mon dieu cette pièce ! Alibaba est un noob à côté ^^
johnny oh i love you boy i love you :)
Yeah, the game is pretty basic! But it's just so neat to me.
Nice video, thank you, its funny, kids today refuse to realize the underlying gameplay/programming is essentially the VERY SAME WITH ALL NEXT GEN CONSOLES, WITH AMAZINGLY ACCELERATED GRAPHICS LAID OVER, in essence, you are STILL paddling the shot at a target, maybe some slightly more complex dodging onscreen
dude what happend to pac man restore
Yeah, one of my least favorite parts of this game. I could never get it to line up in a way that didn't look stupid. If all the original stuff wasn't there or the game was in worse condition I would have just taken it off.
