  • Kiribati risks becoming the first country to lose its land territory to climate change, as sea levels rise. Supported by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, Kiribati's people are working to protect their islands, planting mangroves and preserving the shoreline. I thought California and Florida was supposed to be underwater many years ago according to scientists! This is fake! According to scientists, the biggest factor of climate change is rising sea levels, caused by melting glaciers due to the warming atmosphere. The “most endangered” place due to climate change is Antarctica. If Antarctica is -50 to -140 degrees Fahrenheit all year around and water’s (with salt) freezing point is 28.4 degrees Fahrenheit, how can ice melt, especially if it’s packed ice (icebergs and glaciers etc)? UN giving false information and lying to everyone. Defund the UN... If this was all true (which I really doubt), I hope the Epstein Island is underwater.

      @@TheBestSistersForever It's only a matter of time before it gets worse. The ice continues to melt and the sea level will always continue to rise. The reason? Global Warming. What caused it? Greenhouse gases. We need the EPA to regulate fuel fossils to prevent further sea rise.

      I've been to Kiribati in the 90's via Cruiseline delivering needs and treats to the people there. Was an unspoiled beautiful small undeveloped island then with people living a truly basic bit seemingly happy existence. So sad the weather .... globally has directly hit these tropical islands. I will forever keep your islands in my heart. Thankful I was there
      It was only allowed to visit through cruises then every 2 weeks. We went through Hawaiin Islands and on to Kiribati after 2 or 3 days at sea. By small boats a few passengers at a time visited for a few hours. The calm turquoise water was warm and sands white. A memory still vivid. Now at 73 I am so grateful for that opportunity

    This makes it an even greater "must visit" destination. The immediacy SHOULD ensure that intending tourists put Kiribati right at the top of the priority list, before it becomes completely submerged and they miss the opportunity that presents itself at the moment. Also, with sufficient funding from nations (I'm thinking of New Zealand perhaps), the political government of the day should look to future development of the main island groups as potential, modern underwater village or city concept models by getting Auckland and Wellington architects, civil engineers and students to work on plans straight away. NZ could sell the concept internationally. And just think what a tourist mecca these islands could be by constructing such a mammoth (and still quite unique) viable underwater nation that would be able to employ ALL of those islanders there for a very long time. An above surface airport facility wouldn't be required, as the tourists could simply be brought in by submarine (so as to enhance the vacation adventure) or by cruise ships which could launch the passengers wearing scuba gear into the water, to dive and swim to the underwater reception chambers. Just imagine. The possibilities are almost limitless.

    • @AVportau
      @AVportau 2 роки тому

      you've got quite an imagination there.... but a project that size couldn't be tackled by NZ... or Oz either... maybe the Chinese could do it... best thing for the islands that are being invaded by the ocean is to build them up. most are atop of extinct volcanic peaks and wont sink or wash away if decent retaining walls are built and sand pumped in... could probably build the islands up 20m over time. sure would cost a lot less than an underwater island... NZ could "maybe" afford that... China's got a few sand pumping barges for hire.
      personally i think the world will turn it's back on these islands and say "it's easier to relocate than rebuild"... and the good old "it's not my problem. i'm not getting wet".
      meanwhile NSW govt is considering moving the town of Lismore at enormous cost coz years ago some dill thought building on flood areas was a good idea... they spent $millions on a flood levy that ultimately failed... happens everywhere... people want to live next to rivers but don't like getting flooded... i prefer living above flood level myself.

Just when I was already planning out what I'd do with those millions (in kind) I'd be paid for coming up with such a fantastic concept! Perhaps Hollywood might throw me some free movie passes if I put the concept to them. Secondly, I actually agree with you, in that once smaller land masses such as islands appear to no longer be habitable for most people to live on, then they should grab what they can and abandon ship. It's not like Nauru, where all that eroded away was a short-term, viable bird poop resource. The best thing is that various nations can still send ambassadors and even governors in, to assist with the departure, and they'd still receive a handsome salary. And by not sinking completely, they can probably still hold their sovereignty status, even if only a monarch or some other symbolic dignitary remains, housed in a bathtub or on a rubber tyre inner, donning wetsuit, snorkel and flippers. That would still give the nation voting rights at the UN, I guess.

      i would think China is sitting back waiting for Kiribati to give up on the west ever saving them and sell out cheap. it's not really of any strategic worth now that China have the Solomon Islands on side.
      i couldn't imagine living on low lying areas that will have issues with storm surge during average storms. even if they were 5m above sea level their coasts would be topped by even larger waves at times.

Perhaps I'd bring an army division and navy detachment following a quietly and well rehearsed uprising if the sea levels didn't rise quick enough, so as to boot out any monarchs and cronies who refused to budge, and any lords and nobles who failed to see cents (and dollars). The possibilities are limitless right now. Cheers.

      True, it was fine in the post war years. It is now that we are seeing 23,000 people trying to live on the old airfield at Betio that we have the problem. There are 33 islands in the group and the country is twice the size of Texas. Unfortunately most of that is sea. Kiribati is 13% larger than Singapore. Meanwhile, the population of Singapore is ~6.2 million people (6.1 million fewer people live in Kiribati).

      Okay, prove it.
      These islands should never have formed then, if that was the case.
      They have been around for tens of thousands of years, don’t you think the sea should have prevented their formation if erosion was this strong?

      That Won't be any help. If anyone does that, the wave will just go over it, there used to be walls, They are broken now. Because the wave got stronger and stronger then got over it. You see, this is an emergency, China doesn’t have anything to do with it. Someone NEEDS to make a move. Or that country, with nice, heartwarming, kind people, will face consequences.

    Kiribati won't sink under water. Its tech ideas use it and you shall solve the problem. Land raise reclamation is key to kiribati problem: Just remove top soil fill it with deep sea sand and than built walls and mangrove walls around...Kiribati has the biggest ocean in the Pacific and they have no problem at all.
