  • I found a problem, but not THE problem on my slow Fiery. Good thing is I think I'll just swap out the presses and then I don;t need that Fiery. Then I we blown away that I can print on a clear transparency film used for exposing emulsion on screen printing screens. WOW! Next, my magenta developer unit on the c3070 stopped working and I put a used one in to keep printing. Another productive week. Thanks for watching!

      I do screen printing also and use an Epson with a rip to output films for burning screens. I believe the density is better with Epsons but we use film made for pigment ink printers.

    On the developer - maybe things have changed since I retired but the developer is just a carrier for the toner, toner is metered to the dev cartridge and the action mixes the toner and the developer before throwing the mixture against the drum where the toner is electrostatically attracted to the areas that are charged and the stripped dev falls back into the cartridge. The developer will eventually be abraded and will lose its ability to attract and hold the toner - then it need replacing. As your cartridge seemed to have an insufficient amount of developer it has escaped somewhere, possibly due to damaged lower seals on the dev unit, look in the bottom of the machine!

    Regarding the screen-printing-foil: I'm doing screen-printing myself and I can just print on a special laser-foil (no backing-paper) on our Xerox machines. You might need to do doubles though because toner, unlike black ink from an inkjet, will not be opaque enough to block light from the screen. We also have LFPs that can print stuff like that. Both working great.
    Just be careful not to but too much heat on these sheets or they will stick to your fuser.

    Just to echo the other comments, you are going to want to get thermal paste in there -- The processor didn't fry itself because it was slowing down because it was getting hot. And from the looks of it that fiery is just a standard motherboard so you should be able to look up the maximum memory and load it up.

    • @justaprinter
      @justaprinter  2 роки тому

      Good point. I'll put paste on that asap. And upgrade to ssd and add ram

  • @winch1587
    @winch1587 2 роки тому +1

    A bit late, but you can swap the HDD for a SSD, which will speed up things a bit. Also a good thing to upgrade the memory to more. On some Fiery's you can also set up 2 SSD in RAID 1. Mind you that a SSD can fail in an instant, while the HDD mostly faisl gradually. Have never seen a processor die. Mostly the motherboard will throttle it for protection. Had 1 mainboard fail on a Xerox DC240. Good thing we still had the Fiery from a old KM, which had the same mainboard. These mainboards (from TYAN) are not available for sale.

  • @HenryLoenwind
    @HenryLoenwind 2 роки тому +2

    That thermal pad is rated for a higher difference temperature than the paste. That means that the processor will run 15 to 20 K hotter than intended. That probably is enough to get into thermal throttling. Those pads are great for power transistors that are happy to run at 115°C with their heatsinks cooled by ambient air (delta of 80 K), but processors want to be somewhere in the 50-90°C range, thats a much lower delta (20+ K), so having a pad with a thermal resistance of 20 K there in addition to the heatsink's delta won't work as well.
    A visualisation would be: Think of a screw. If you have a 3 inch long screw to screw a 1 inch thick board into a wall, using a 1/2 inch thick washer is fine. If you have a 1 inch screw for a 1/2 inch thick board, that 1/2 inch thick washer doesn't fly.

    • @justaprinter
      @justaprinter  2 роки тому

      Thanks for this! I have paste on the way and will swap it out. Makes sense as I never understood how the pads would be any good. I mean, conduction is the best transfer of heat.

    Regarding the transparency, be sure to mirror the image so that it is right reading with the toner (emulsion) down against the screen when exposing to assure a crisp edge and preserve finer lines.

    I remember being excited when I found out my second hand machine actually had a three hole puncher built in to the finisher. I was tickled pink, no more buying 3hp papers, or manually punching. I thought for sure the hole punch would be problematic at over 100ppm speeds but ironically its actually the one thing that has given me no problems yet.
    I'd use the machine that is the most reliable and most profitable no matter the age or mileage. Sometimes some machines are just built a little better and for whatever reason(s) don't give as many problems as other ones. Ever have a machine that had a ghost or gremlin in it...or is just a problematic lemon?

    A tip on the Fiery. Just under the large terminal there is a segment display. You can watch the boot up sequence from there. It usually will start with alpha numeric numbers and should eventually go to 00. But if it stops at FF it usually means it is the hard drive. Another test you can do if it is not connecting you can ping its IP address and browse it as well. No ping then it maybe from the cpu thermal paste as others have mentioned. If you can ping it but cannot browse the device then its the hard drive. The hard drives in Fierys are small laptop drives. I have replace many and the old ones you can shake it and it sound like a baby's rattle.

    The new communication cable you see on the Fiery attached to the 2070 looks to be a DisplayPort cable. If you end up not switching the machines but do need to switch out the RIPs you should be able to get a DP -> VGA (or whatever the other machine uses) adapter and it should hook up fine.

    Anytime we had a slow Fiery, we had to install the software from scratch and if that don't fix it then you have to replace the Ram. After that it ran great. And when it comes to Dev units. A lot of times when you replace the Dev Unit, you have to make sure it is getting good connects on the points in the machine and also the unit.

    The CPUs barely go bad in any computer. Due to that fan being stuck most likely has been drawing overload from the power supply unit and the most common consequence on that is hard drive failure. We’ve reloaded Fiery in all my rips using SSD drives. The difference is very noticeable in booting and ripping time. As far as developing, there is an optical sensor most likely at the bottom that ‘measures’ toner amount into the drum. Thats get dirty. In magenta unit, as the most worked unit among 4 it gets dirtier until it throws an alarm or a code.

    Gilclear vs UV Ultra. I thought Gilclear was discontinued. Anyway, I have tried both in the past and Gilclear did not work well. UV Ultra worked great. Perhaps the UV in the name suggests that it is UV transparent. I am pretty sure that your lack of magenta developer has something to do with your magenta drum replacement previously. There might be a voltage problem or a wrong adjustment on the drum so that it soaked out the developer. Saw that a few times on different Konica systems. Also I would recommend doing all the needed adjustments after replacing the dv units, that would be: Counter reset, developer replacement auto adjustment, toner density sensor init auto adj, gamma auto adj, color registration auto adj, density balance auto adj and a maximum density inital adjustment.

    There is no need to worry about the processor overheating and getting permanent damage. You may have shortened the lifespan of >25 Years by half a year at most. The ages where you could damage a cpu by simply not having enough cooling are long gone (temp sensor under the cpu, slow reaction time), the ages where you could still damage one by ripping the cooler off while peak load, are long gone too (temp sensor in the cpu). If that "slow" is the connection to the network: Check if you set manual static IP addresses (dhcp is slower). I once had slow and bad network because of a cheap cable where the latch on the RJ45 connector was a little short and the connector could slip out of the port just enough that the network card re-negotiated between 100 mbit/s and gigabit all the time.
    If that's a mechanical HDD that would be my first guess, if you have non-ECC Ram that would be my second guess. Is there any method to read S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics data of of the drive?

    Makes me wonder why do we have PC’s attached to the printers anyways :/
    Intergrated fiery? You mean a PC with linux OS phisically attached to the printer? Shouldn’t it be the other way around? One server multiple printers? What’s in it that can’t be handled by a network computer and send raw data to it?
    I mean, large format Epsons also have a casing that looks like a PC. You can access it over the network via http so i guess there’s a PC in it too (never had a peek into it) but the ripping is done on one central machine of your choice that you install rip softwre on, which then transfers ripped data to it.
    You have CWS, why is that thing even mounted there?
    Hope someone can shed some light on it since i’m clearly missing something here. Br

    • @proudimages1839

      Because an ethernet port is not enough to send/receive rip data. If you have noticed aside from the ethernet port there is another serial port cable that connects to the printer. Just a guess.
