Silly to stop watching the Oscar’s over that loss when grand Budapest wasn’t a top 5 film that year against Oscar nominees and non nominees (night crawler, gone girl, etc)

Yeah I mean as much as I loved The Grand Budapest Hotel, the year of 2014 was a FANTASTIC year for films. (Whiplash, Relatos Salvajes, Birdman, Boyhood, Gone Girl, Selma, The Tale of the princess Kaguya etc.) Grand Budapest had a lot of competition that year and I feel like in most other years they could have gotten more awards but it came out at the wrong year I’m afraid.

    • @amigos2841
      @amigos2841 Рік тому +1

I would take it with a pinch of salt because nearly 10 years later people still talk about Grand Budapest and hardly any mention of Birdman, this happens quite often look at Crash vs Brokeback Mountain, for me the hardest oscar to accept for me was No Country For Old Men over There Will Be Blood but again years later There Will Be Blood ranked higher on greatest films of the century based on film critics around the world and is considered a superior film

I really think The French Dispatch is soo underrated. Many people complained about the lack of depth to stories but I felt the film was literally meant to be the newspaper translated into film form. When u read a magazine, you don’t get an in depth human analysis of a character, it’s the essence of the story written in a stylised and entertaining way. I think he captured this perfectly. Ofc for many people to watch a film without substance makes it worse, by why does a film have to have substance to be perfect ? I think it’s fair to think that not all films set out to achieve a perfect balance. Sometimes style is enough and frankly, I could pause any frame from the French dispatch and sit and look at it for hours on end, completely happy. Outstanding and extremely original film imo

Personally I've always found Wes Anderson movies more melancholy than depressing. There is a bittersweet quality to their stories that is oddly heartwarming. Also glad to see some love thrown at Moonrise Kingdom. I related to those kids a lot. It's elite tier in my book.

    Great Video.
    I'm 53, and a Wes Anderson fan since 1998.
Elites - Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic.
Pretty Great - Moonrise Kingdom, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Darjeeling Limited
Good - The Grand Budapest Hotel, Isle of Dogs, French Dispatch
Bottle Rocket gets better and better the more I watch it. I didn't get into Life Aquatic at first, but then I got a little older, and started relating to Steve's character. Now I love that movie. I didn't like the way he played around with the aspect ratio on Grand Budapest. I know why he did it, I just didn't like it as a viewer. But I should rewatch that one.
I'm a little embarrassed to say I haven't seen Asteroid City yet.

    5. Asteroid City
    6. Life Aquatic
    7. The Royal Tenenbaums
    8. Rushmore
    9. Bottle Rocket
    10. Isle of Dogs
    11. Fantastic Mr. Fox
He's also got a whole slew if great shorts that could make their own entire list.

That's pretty spooky, my ranking is nearly identical to yours, except for Bottle Rocket (which I haven't seen) and The Darjeeling Limited (I have it as 'good').
I really like Anderson and his work, you can make the argument his films are kind of derivative and samey, but I really don't care. His films are so meticulously well-crafted, with beautiful production design, costumes, cinematography and music - both original and pre-existing - that I can't help but get swept away by the charm and passion of it all, even with his weakest films. Add onto that how often he's able to get career-best performances out of legendary actors like Ralph Fiennes and Gene Hackman, up-and-coming stars like Saoirse Ronan and Tony Revelori, and makes great use of his recurring collaborators, and you really can't go wrong with his delightfully quirky films
