  • The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have had a plethora of films in the history of the franchise's existence, but there is one that is heavily overlooked. TMNT is a 2007 CGI animated film and is the first animated film in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film franchise. It's been over 15 years since the film's release and today, I've decided to revisit it to determine if the film has deserved to be forgotten to time or if it is a forgotten, misunderstood masterpiece.

Tmnt 2007 is the best tmnt movie to date, the interaction between the turtles is so good, like they coulda scrapped the whole immortal guy plot and made it just about raph being the vigilante and the strain it puts on the rest, idk its just so good

I'd like to think this is a movie about the importance of family. I think we're supposed to be frustrated with Leo until he really sees just what his brothers have been through as well as winters broken brotherhood. I like this movie, it's still my favorite TMNT project to this day I think the sequels would've improved.

Today i am going to be your "Lore guy", cause i've learned some stuff about this particular version of turtles.
So, apparently, there is a 5-part comic prequel that adds A LOT to the story, let me tell ya
Each part is a single story about one of the turtles + April
#1 is Raphael - we get an explanation why is he the Night Watcher. So, apparantly, he met an old guy, who was Night Watcher before, but now retired. The guy gets shot by some muggers and tells Raphael continue his work. Also, we learn how started the devide between Raph and Leo. Leonardo was chosen by Master Splinter to go travel around the world and "Complete his training" or smth. Raph gets jealous (i guess)
#2 is Mikey - basically a filler. In the 1st issue Mikey talks with Donnie about the idea of "Cawabanga Carl" (his job from the movie) - and the comic is all about that. Just some Casey, Mikey and Donnie shinanigans. We also see Night Watcher.
#3 is about Donnie - he creates a machine that scans the entire city for some "unusual" stuff, like mutants or smth. He and Splinter go on top the building to get a better signal, but suddenly, Donnie is kidnapped by that Bat beast from the movie.
Splinter and Mikey are preparing to save him, but actually, Donnie found a way to comunicate with this thing, but the gang scares it off. End of the story.
#4 is April. It's about how she became a "Lara Croft knock-off" for Winters, when he approuched her in the antique store. She had a good knowledge of history, so he offered her to find one the stone generals - and the rest of the issue is basically that one adventure, that leads to the beginning of the movie, since that scene with Leo happened in it.
And of course the last one is all about Leonardo. Probably, the most weird one, because of the journey he had to take - it's some spiritual thing, like he was going on those small adventures (for example, saving people from being shipped to become slaves - yea, that happened) and there is kinda an explanation to all those things he does, but from the logic of the journey itself it seems random.
So, in the end he met... the ninja master from TMNT 2003 season 4... i was surprised too.
Leonardo got himself beaten by this small fat dude - and in the very end he is like, "Your jorney isn't complete, you aren't ready, get out of here" and then Leo settles in the jungle of Central America, until he suddenly comes to the realisation that "it's time to go home".
    Well this is random.
Now you don't need to read the comics (but i still recommend to do that - i like it anyway)
There was also a little children's book, that for some unknown reason told the extended story of Yaotle of all things - that after 13 beasts have been released it was the shaman witch that turned Yaotle's brothers and sister in a stone (and i actually like this explanation - unlike in the movie, where the curse of stone and immortality has no connection)
But why on God's Earth is this in a children's book and not in the movie...?
All the things in those prequels feel like they should be in the movie?
Why make 13 beasts if you will show almost all of them captured through the montage? The conflict between Raph and Leo also becomes a bit more understandable (not enoegh though), but it's not in the movie...
There was a lot of potential for this franchise... how great it could've been.

I guess we think different, I like this version of leo, the character of him, he's not likable but hes a necessary evil for raphs character, this was my fav version of raph, he was right for once, leo was all stuck up and rude because splinter treated him poorly, i think this version of splinter ruined the family, he blames everything on leo, but then sends Leo away and punishes the other turtles, he doesn't do any family talks or activities, everyone is distant because of him, and if leo was in the right we would have never had the amazing scene, what woulda helped the film was had leo realized he was wrong in the end, but na in the end the film doesn't talk about the fight on the rooftop, the stone warriors were a good concept with a horrible backstory, the monsters i liked but coulda been fleshed out, winters was a horrible character, this movie coulda been perfect without the cringy stone warriors or winters, the plot coulds been the footclan get their hands on krang tech, open a portal, monsters come out and the turtles gotta stop it, the same brother fight happens, and instead of 13 monsters it's maybe 5, and so after the leo raph fight, a monster captures leo or the footclan, then we see Leo reflecting on what happened, flashbacks of splinter always yellin at leo through his years, and how leo projected his anger onto Raph, leo hated himself as a vigilante in south America but puts it on the night watcher, that woulda been a more humane way of making Leo instead of the leo who sucks up to splinter, doesn't see the brothers feelings through and was gone for a year selfishly, literally mikey and raph and potentially donnie were the most innocent in this movie, with a bad environment, splinter started this and leo was just an assist, donnie just accepted it, and Mikey seemed like he felt alone, and raph stayed to himself because he hated it, the fact he had to hide his viglinate stuff and the fact the turtles didn't check up on raph at all and "let him stay in his room all day" kinda says alot about the family connection, they didn't know raph was nightwatcher yet still let raph stay alone in his room all day, that's messed up, i really liked the movie tho, the broken family storyline is so interesting, i really don't like the cliche happy ending, they shoulda talked about the problems, personally i felt the turtles, i know you said u didn't see the reason to attach to them because they weren't built up, and hey my fav leo is 2012 and splinter, i love 80s turtles too, but in this specific movie it's a whole different vibe, i think the theme if the movie shoulda been family, not we gotta work as a team and save the world typa deal, the movie put the family problems as a second priority while teamwork and stopping the monsters was a first, i would rate the movie a 7.5/10, The Cgi, Voice acting, character designs and atmosphere is a 10 imo, but the flaws such as underwhelming villian, lack of character reflection and lack of memorable action scenes besides the rooftop fight says alot, the goods outweigh the bad which favours the movie but the bads are just pathetic, how did the writer for Raph vs leo also have the same idea for stone warriors, great video though

I found myself watching this Movie over and over again in my Mid 20s when it was available on Starz at the time. The Movie overall is fine, they get each Turtles personalities and mannerisms down pretty well enough and yea, the Leo/Raph Showdown is the best sequence of any TMNT Show or film, the main issue I have w/ the film is if you know nothing about the story behind the series and never watched the Cartoon Series or original Trilogy, your lost watching this film the 1st time. It just picked up where it left off from the 90s Trilogy . This is why the movie was panned by Critics so badly but loved by fans. I think it should have went at least 10 minutes establishing each Turtle character and their feelings for 1 another much better then they did. Otherwise somebody is going to say "Why should I feel anything or anybody currently on screen?" when they watch it the 1st time

This movie really doesn't have a pacing problem. If anything, I think the pacing is one of the movie's strongest attributes. The movie is constantly moving and doing cool stuff, while giving you just enough content with Raph and Leo to understand their dynamic, but not enouggh to think about the plot in session. The Winters plot is always in the shadows and it always a veil of mystery, slowly revealing it's cards while we focus on the Turtles. And yes, Leo's a hypocrite and in the wrong and the movie recognizes this. It's okay for good characters to be in the wrong. They're both in the wrong. Everything they both is the truth about one another, as brothers they have a strong understanding of one another. Leo is smug and Raph is impatient and hot tempered, and endangering their family. The difference between their brsnds of vigilantism is that Raph is playing the Batman role and putting citizens in danger, while Leo is killing those who pray on the weak, not puttting anyone in danger, but he stayed away because he felt like the people there needed him more thsn The Turtles did. Raphael acts like he hates Leo for this but in reality he's just hurt that he left and didn't come back. All of this is set up well and the story makes you read into the plot to understsnd it, you draw your conclusions, and that's what's good about it. It is a masterpiece

I loved this film when it came out, bought it on dvd when i could, then repurchased on blu-ray. That said, i was a fan from the early 90s, and I'm someone who gets caught up in films and only gets critical when issues are pointed out, so... At the time, i was just impressed with the animation and the acting, and the pacing never gave me a chance to notice the flaws that you rightfully point out. A movie really has to work hard to make me dislike it or criticize it (I've hated nearly all of Michael Bay's IP ruination of my childhood) but in retrospect, yeah, that plot needed to be better.

I'd personally love to see an animated (or better yet live action with practical effects) film based on the Last Ronin story! But thats so niche that I doubt that will ever happen. This movie was ok but nothing will ever live up to the original Golden Harvest 1990 film.
So many parts of that film hit the nail on the head perfectly in regards to the original Mirage comicbooks look and style. So many classic scenes from Casey first meeting Raphael. The foot ambush on the roof to the entire farmhouse section of the movie. I even like the scenes with Danny and the captured Splinter. It had a lot of emotional moments and it told a better story of what a family truly is and what it is not! More so than any shitty Fast and the Furious movie ever could, and thats for damn sure! Plus Shredder and the Foot Clan look absolutely perfect in that movie. Costume department did a truly great job!
