Joe said in interviews that he was trying to picture Micks "young life" as he wrote the lyrics for this song. Joe also said that Mick was notouriously allways late to rehersals with The Clash but that "that kind of musicality was worth waiting for".
Really appreciate this, it's my favorite song from The Clash who are very dear to my heart. I've learned to play along to it with James James' videos but I really like how you've transposed it and of course the melodies and harmonics and stuff... Going to have a ton of fun learning this!
I brought this song into a guitar lesson once in the mid-90's. My guitar teacher was right about all the notes, but I always thought something was off in the verse, don't get me wrong, I still love my guitar teacher to this day, but you just explained it. I knew it was a higher pitch than just chords. Thanks mate.
What a great lesson Adrian! This song holds a special place in my heart/memory because very early in my guitar playing journey, I tried to learn a bunch of Clash songs with my best friend (and first bandmate). I remember having a lot of difficulty with this song - it never occurred to me to try any alternate tunings (back then I didn't even know any haha). I do remember thinking that the bass parts were all awesome in their songs and really add a ton to the overall feel. As a quick aside, your Tele is developing some really nice wear now! Looking and sounding great as always!
There used to be a big Safeway up towards Sloane Square, it was a big enough supermarket to get lost in, but it is now split up - part of it is a Pret. It was on the corner of St Leonards terrace.
the stand out track from an album of bangers. My favourite clash song. thanks for transcribing. Mick Jones an absolute genius and only he could have written this song. Strummer a great sopng writer but didnt have the life experience that Jones graphically recorded in this track. Just brilliant.
I'm another one that was around when this song came out...it was years before I finally realized it was in open tuning! :-) Thank you for this...it's one of The Clash's best and deserves the full attention you've given it! It always amazed me that The Clash went from White Riot to the subtlety of Lost in the Supermarket in just a few short years given the song's relative complexity.
Love Mick Jones Hate Fascism. Adrian you may surprise but never disappoint. This, Train in Vain and Stay Free could easily be my favourite 3 songs ever!
A wonderful song choice- as always- if you're ever in the mood for some more recent melodic punk antics The Cribs dont dissappoint, hell they even did an album with Johnny Fuckin Marr. Cheers!
Lesser known, yet was still selected to be on story of the Clash completions. Great song, I tried to learn early on in my guitar journey, may need to go back and give it another try. Thanks!
On YT avoiding the news as everything is broken - then the day that starts with a Clash lesson \0/ from Adrian becomes indeed a good day :) Cheers ! - learning this over the weekend.
At last! Fabulous, didn't know it was in 'open tuning' , and if you'll pardon the expression, therein lies the key. One note: Joe was a rudimentary guitarist, so all of the subtle rhythm will have been played by Mick....thanks again....
Great lesson of a great track as usual Adrian. One thing I've always wondered; why do you (and other experienced guitarists) go up the other end of the neck, only to return to the same fret you were on to find the next note/chord? Thanks
That’s a great breakdown of a great song Adrian thanks! It would be great to find out how they came up with those parts…they’re not the sort of things you stumble across whilst your noodling around…well certainly not in my noodling experience 😂
I honestly have no idea how to play guitar or any idea what you were talking about most of the time but I've always loved the song. Very cool video. 😎 How about Carbon/Silicon "Gangs of England "?
That might have been the supermarket which inspired the song but I understood that Joe had written it as a bit of a dig at Mick and the icing on the cake was getting Mick to sing it - which may explain why it was never performed live.
Might be a bit mainstream but would love to see you disect some Nirvana tunes - Love Buzz, Blew, Serve the Servants - the more interesting ones future wise
I can feel the existential angst of an individual lost in a supermarket tempered by the knowledge that at least one won't starve to death; good food; food we like.
Hello Im french, I love what you do and your style but there was a life after the nineteen's so many amazing bands you could cover and explain : franz Ferdinand the libertines bloc party etc...
They should maybe have a "hidden" statue/picture of Joe in the store.........somewhere hard to find! And then he truly will......still be "lost" in the supermarket... : )
I can not begin to describe the almost cosmic coincidence of this. I just discovered this song TODAY, and have already listened to it three times. Absolutely incredible. Can't wait to get stuck in. YES
I am an old bastard who remembers when this was released and learning to emulate the most amazingly delicate lead lines he'd ever heard from a punk band.
I'm unwilling to take my guitar out of standard tuning until I feel I've reached a level of competency that I feel I need to be at and now, still I feel unworthy to do that.
Joe said in interviews that he was trying to picture Micks "young life" as he wrote the lyrics for this song. Joe also said that Mick was notouriously allways late to rehersals with The Clash but that "that kind of musicality was worth waiting for".
Nice info - thanks 👍
I have no idea how you always manage to pick out the most melodic songs from each of my favorite bands (Girl Afraid, A Forest, this one etc.)
it is called good taste 😃
Possibly my favorite Clash tune. Thanks for doing this one!
Love it
Jumped up on stage with the clash at brixton academy when I was 15,still at school.....I will never forget that moment !
What a track, what an album, what a band! Love the video. Thank you.
I finally understand how to play this song thanks to you, as I play guitar for 45 years. I would have stop before.
More clash please!!! One of my favorites!
This is my favorite Clash song! It has such a dreamy feel (which fits the theme)
One of my favourites, hadn’t even thought about learning it but now you’ve posted this, it’s gonna be my weekend project. Cheers again

Always loved this song…..absolutely brilliant job on this!
Oh what a GREAT choice for a lesson, you did this beautifully, Adrian, thank you 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for the excellent breakdown on this great song! Well done.

And thwe amazing thing is that both songs are fucking awesome
This is great. Thanks Adrian.
If only all guitar lessons were this good!
Love Mick Jones Hate Fascism. Adrian you may surprise but never disappoint. This, Train in Vain and Stay Free could easily be my favourite 3 songs ever!
+1 for Stay Free
One of my favorite Clash tunes. Have wanted to learn this for 30 years! Can’t wait to get started on it! Thanks for a great lesson Adrian!
Obviously haven't watched it yet but obviously giving it a thumbs up and declaring it's a 10/10 banger
I loveee this song, thanks for posting!
Definitely a gem of a song!
i was searching myself why there wasn't a lot of guitar lessons of this song and now that i saw this video i understood there's no need to have more
Good stuff Adrian! 🤟🏼 keep it up man 🎸😎
it's a song i used to skip over when i was a teenager. took my older ears to appreciate it. ps: love that guitar you're doing the lead bits on!
Nice channel. I'll be hanging around for while. Great choices of tunes to learn.
you're my guitar hero
One of my favorites, well done mate!
Damn I am in 100% agreement with your choices and tastes, cheers!
It was played live at the 1983 gigs leading up to the US Festival
A wonderful song choice- as always- if you're ever in the mood for some more recent melodic punk antics The Cribs dont dissappoint, hell they even did an album with Johnny Fuckin Marr. Cheers!
We Share The Same Skies would be great.Such an underrated Marr riff.
Saw them open for Modest Mouse a few days ago. Killer show!
Woaw ! What a good surprise !
A strummer pilgrimage would be great. Especially if it took you to dive in on midnight jam or even better bhindi bhagee
You're still at the toppermost Adrian with your instruction videos. Much appreciated.
Lesser known, yet was still selected to be on story of the Clash completions. Great song, I tried to learn early on in my guitar journey, may need to go back and give it another try. Thanks!
Lovely choice, probably my favorite song off of London Calling. I think you should do a lesson on China Girl by Iggy Pop
On YT avoiding the news as everything is broken - then the day that starts with a Clash lesson \0/ from Adrian becomes indeed a good day :) Cheers ! - learning this over the weekend.
I love this channel so F@#$ much
Adrian you legend!!!!
At last! Fabulous, didn't know it was in 'open tuning' , and if you'll pardon the expression, therein lies the key. One note: Joe was a rudimentary guitarist, so all of the subtle rhythm will have been played by Mick....thanks again....
Nice choice, nice lesson!
thank you!!
Incredible: most of the times you do a tutorial for the songs I would have also chosen from a given album!
Love London Calling!
Interesting choice! It is a really good song.
Great lesson of a great track as usual Adrian. One thing I've always wondered; why do you (and other experienced guitarists) go up the other end of the neck, only to return to the same fret you were on to find the next note/chord? Thanks
Awesome video! Been trying to figure out how those harmonics were made for years!
Top drawer stuff! 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
That tele 😍
Clash. ❤
NO WAY! You rock, Adrian. :)
Ok I’m not sure why I don’t watch this channel more but that’s about to change 👍
Just great 👍
That’s a great breakdown of a great song Adrian thanks! It would be great to find out how they came up with those parts…they’re not the sort of things you stumble across whilst your noodling around…well certainly not in my noodling experience 😂
Very cool

I always loved Toppers little fills at the end and the quick funk ending
Topper is so great.
@@Barry101er HIGHLY and CRIMINALLY underrated drummer.
Hell ya, that bass and hi-hat...
@@alexandermascia6544 Do you know is solo LP, Waking up? Worth checking out-some of it very (late) Clashy-sounding.
@@Barry101er Dude, I had no idea that was out there. I'll check it out for sure.
My favourite clash song performed by mick Jones
Do you pick your shirt to match the band? One of my fave Clash tracks. Thanks 😊
What about the guitar effects? How can we obtain that particular sound?
Hi Adrian this is my fav the clash song! can you tell me what pickups are yo using on that tele? sounds amazing.
That might have been the supermarket which inspired the song but I understood that Joe had written it as a bit of a dig at Mick and the icing on the cake was getting Mick to sing it - which may explain why it was never performed live.
Nice!
been my favorite one since i was 9
Adrian, where do u get your backing tracks? Great lesson as always!
he probably records them himself. just a guess.
Keep the 1st finger (A) on the 3rd 1st fret string open e chord sometimes when picking out the riff. Sus4
Hello Im french, I love what you do and your style but there was a life after the nineteen's so many amazing bands you could cover and explain : franz Ferdinand the libertines bloc party etc...
Who knew shopping for packets of tea could be so punk rock.
Death or glory ....or.....card cheat next please Adrian
I came in here for the special offer - guaranteed personality.
Came in for that special offer,
Guaranteed Personality.
If Joe Strummer was playing harmonics, it no wonder they never played it live.
Tidy, like deployed 👍
😎🎙🎸✅
Thank god.
One of the best songs about the human condition
They should maybe have a "hidden" statue/picture of Joe in the store.........somewhere hard to find!

I discovered it just now through this video… what a beautiful, atmospheric intro… I can’t wait to dive in after work
Muzak!
Stephen merchant the guitar instructor
I feel a bit free.

This made me laugh, I do the same - won't even use a capo until I get better at playing by ear.
Eeeeek! My favourite track on Calling. Amazing stuff, thank you.
