But in 1984, for the spelling round the word was still shown on screen while the contestants were spelling it. Only from 1985 onwards the word wasn't shown while contestants were spelling it and Jim Bowen said "I'll check ut with bully" but only when the first contestant having a crack at spelling it was correct.
Because in those days different regions would be watching at different times of the day so they knew when to tell their friends they would be on. It wouldn't work in this day and age - imagine people giving away storylines of soaps online!
This Bully's Prize the contestants who got that on Bully's prize board, did they keep it along with their money if they gambled the prizes that they won, or was it at risk?
The set looks 1970's style note from1984 onwards the theme changed, boards were joined to 3 in one, bully used to bellow in to replace buzzer when contestants were out of time when questions asked.
I wonder how much of this was pre-scripted ? - Undoubtedly Jim would have met the contestants before the show as filmed. Also whenever they say something that's supposed to be funny, there's a guy off-camera gesturing frantically at the audience, or holding up a sign that says "LAUGH" !
I think one of the prerequisites of applying to go in the show is for you to have no personality. A bunch of absolute drips. I'm actually surprised when I see someone on with a bit of personality.
That old sky layout is well nostalgic
"Well, we've had a good day Jim, so we're gonna give the other lads a chance"
from 1984 on wards instead of a time up buzzer, Bully used to bellow in when time was up.

In 1984 Food became Potluck and from 1985 onwards it became Faces.

£130 is about £450 in today's money, so even the "losers" went home with a decent chunk of cash.
