My favorite bit of censorship was after Joey was defeated by the Rare hunter, and Tristan goes to look for him, in the original Tristen finds him on the beach, and punches him to motivate him to come back.
In the 4kids dub, it's implied Joey was found unconscious in an alleyway after the rare hunters beat him up and left him for dead.
Which in a way is darker lol they failed there
Finally someone brings up the Bonz situation!! It’s crazy when you think about how they weren’t one of the people that were brought back when Bakura was finally defeated. Kinda felt bad because Bonz and his group were just Lowkey losers 😂😂😂

I hope we get a fully uncensored version of the yugioh anime now that anime can be darker in the US. I think it would be nice to get a new version before the OG voice actors die. Make it a tribute to Kazuki Takahashi.

To this day I still argue that Joey won his duel with Marik. But of course Kaiba had to be a petty bitch and disqualify him.
Another thing is I really love the concept of the shadow realm in the dub. As a kid I never really understood or took the concept of death seriously in shows. But the shadow realm in concept would scare the SHIT out of me. The thought of going through a purgatory of any punishment all because you lost a game of cards REALLY stuck with me. And honestly, I kind of prefer it. Sure stuff like the saw blade bit is much more interesting then the shadow realm saws and the whole “falling from a huge height will send you to hell” still doesn’t make sense, but the fact that the shadow games, even in the earlier iterations, pose genuinely terrifying threats will always be more interesting then just “Win the game or we cut your hand off.”
Like, I’m more afraid of gettin trapped in a box filling up with sand then just dying cuz I drew the wrong card.
Love the Kaiba the revenge OST in the vid and man YuGiOh was always dark and It shows how ruthless Kaiba is in the manga copared to the toned down Anime. Yami Marik was and will always be my favorite Anime villian in YGO! Rest in peace Kazuki Takahashi he is one of the few Mangakas together with Akira Toriyama which I remembered the name cuz I liked the anime so much and Gosho Aoyama with detective conan.

You’re actually right. In fact, the only Yugioh series that’s actually intended for children is the Yugioh Sevens and Go Rush series. Including the Yugioh Rush Duels game. Which Konami specifically said was made so children can actually comprehend the rules and play.
And let’s not forget, the main Yugioh manga and anime (DM to Vrains) are Shonen. Shonen is a demographic term for both manga and anime that are mainly targeted towards early to late teen boys between 12 and 18 years. And Weekly Shonen Jump is confirmed by the current chief editor Hiroyuki Nakano, to be targeted towards teen boys. Which he has said numerous times in his interviews and that the magazine has always been that way since day 1 of it’s publication. Which would be 1968.
And Yugioh came from this exact magazine and is still considered part of it. And V-Jump is the sister magazine of that and featured the spin-off mangas. So the violence is ok for a teen male demographic.
As for the Japanese version of the card game known as “Yugioh Official Card Game” (OCG), it is confirmed on the back of every pack, deck or set to be for ages 12 and up.
“対象年齢12才以上”
(Translation: “Target age 12 years and older”)
You will find this exact Japanese text on the back of every pack or deck you buy that are OCG. Even ones from when it first came out which was in 1999.
This implies, it’s for early to late teen players. Because “12 and up” ratings are considered standard teen ratings in Japan and other countries. And “15 and up” is considered soft-mature. Understand they have PG-12 which is their version of PG-13. And for video games they have CERO B (12+) which is equivalent to ESRB’s T for Teen.
Not to mention the Konami official OCG tournaments are age restricted as there are only 3 classes:
Challenge: Which is for junior high school students
Regular: For high school students
Expert: For anyone from junior high to adult age.
Understand that junior high students are between 12 and 15. High school students are between 15 and 18. So that means they are keeping Yugioh OCG tournaments strictly for players the OCG is rated towards or older. Locals are not under such restriction, but Konami official tournaments ones are. But hey, it’s Japan. They are known to be very strict with their rules.
And while the anime was toned down a bit in Japan, the swearing, violence and blood wasn’t completely. Cuz the manga was so brutal, Japanese TV regulations just wouldn’t allow it unless it was an OVA.

Well, Yu-gi-oh *wasn't* exclusively for kids(Even in the localized branch specifically made for them, lmao. They actually made certain things darker than the JP anime for some reason). But now it pretty much is and I will never not be disappointed. And it doesn't matter how many people say "Bruh, still being mad, just let it go", from what I have seen Sevens just as a straight up has a less solid and engaging plotstructure and internal guideline than shows that barely have continuity, let alone an IP that is very much continuitybased like Yu-gi-oh(there are some episodic segments in GX, but the vast majority of this is built on the idea of telling larger narratives, that is why people would want to see these stories).
6:35 Yeah, this is certainly a thing. It's actually kinda weird, the JP anime also censored a lot about the manga and it strangely fell into the same anti-censorship fellacy as 4Kids did. Sure, it's a lot more violent to have her brain slowly be eaten by bugs, but it's a lot more conceptually screwed up to have this thing of "Yeah, you will forget everything, your soul will fall apart and then your body will just stop. And that's the end, for all you know they forgot too and it's like you never existed to begin with".

I always lumped Yu-Gi-Oh in with Digimon until recently
It's not that anyone is cheating in the earlier duals. The rules literally didn't exist until the physical card game debuted. Battle City just happens to be the first story arc after that, whereas Duelest Kingdom began a year prior to the physical card game and wasn't gonna change its "rules" midway through.
