Is Becoming a Medical Doctor Overrated? It definitely is for a lot of people and in this video I will go over why that is.
Needed to get this one out there is hopes that I save a few people from falling for this one. So many smart, young, ambitious people try to become a medical doctor for all of the wrong reasons and it's so common that I'm surprised it isn't a meme by this point. Or maybe it is? Let me know in the comments

Anyways I want to make it REALLY CLEAR that in no way am I looking down on doctors, they're awesome and they deserve all of the respect that they get. The point I'm trying to make with this video is that most people don't know what they're getting into, they go into it with the wrong intentions, and many of them regret their decisions afterwards.

When I lost BOTH my grandparents to cancer within 3 months, it made me start to wonder WHY. How it happened so quickly to two people living together, under the same causes. That’s how I started researching consistently, almost obsessively because I needed an answer to cope with the pain. From there, it all started. My admiration for medicine, how you have to make everything fit in the puzzle in order to solve a problem. It’s fascinating. So yes. I did get interested because I lost the people I loved.

Emphasis on parents brainwashing or deciding its doctor or bust. I finally decided I didn’t want to go to medical school, instead I prefer PA school. My father was so angry , hasn’t spoken to me in a bit. Also it’s my senior year I finally decided I wanted to be a PA. My advice? Parents won’t be here forever, do it for yourself.

The moment I stopped pursuing an MD I felt I could breath. Please volunteer and do your research in order to make a decision. While I know Docs that love their career I have met others who regret it

Same. They make the process of just APPLYING to medical school so ridiculous and daunting. It is damn near corrupt how they take advantage of applicants and leave them in the dark.
Im a medical student...top 3 things to do to figure out if medicine is right for you:
1. Shadow a doctor in hospital
2. Shadow a doctor on call
3. Shadow a doctor in primary care
If you see yourself doing what they do 24/7 and you wont bitch about working 65+ hours a week, then pursue medicine.

That actually depends on your specialty people who like to work less and chill more opt for ROAD specialities
R- radiology (40-48hrs/ week)
O- ophthalmology (45-47 hrs/week)
A- anaesthesiology (40-60hrs/ week) the highest work hours out of 4
D- Dermatology (30-40hrs/week) highest base pay out of 4
All these specialities (especially radiology and dermatology) are high paying that’s why they are highly competitive too
Tip: Pull an all nighter before you shadow the doctor, if you’re pissed off and annoyed the whole time, there’s a good chance you’ll feel like that while you’re a resident, working 24 hours in a row.
I was obsessed with being a doctor until I started working for one. I am in my senior year though, so it does suck a bit, but IMO pushing through and getting the MD would suck much MORE.
I’m a software dev but my parents are still disappointed I’m not a lawyer or doctor. Asian parents 😔

i have the same problem. One of my dad's friends calls him once a week or so to remind him how his daughter is in med school while i'm learning computer science. He looks at me with disappointment.

Shane Hummus - The Success GPS I think it’s great. I completely agree that being a doctor is right for some people, but otherwise it’s an overhyped career. Lawyers should be next. They’re an even worse case IMO.

I am from an Asian Family There is a huge pressure from relatives and friends to become a doctor, especially from my mother's side of the family. But since I was young, my father told me to become doctor ONLY ONLY if you could NOT see yourself doing anything else. Now I understand why.

@@ShaneHummus I got a computer science degree. However, that degree did not teach me the skills I need for my job. I had to learn Java, J2EE on my own. Degree was just something I can put one my resume. This was 20 years ago, we did not have coding boot camp. And back then to learn coding you had to read a book. we did not have udemy, treehouse... You don't get a video to watch to learn.

In most part of word I guess, that video talk about Americans but it is the same situation in LA, most of parents want you to be a doctor, and there are tons of doctors applicants at university, if you want to go a great University you are overwhelmed because is the top one choosing career.. but you can do other things with that money and time .

My dad was a doctor. Worked til he was 84--constantly. Fortunately, he liked it. But not for me. He was a psychiatrist, but hated it so much, he did a new residency in cardiology starting at 40. Was brutal on the finances. Again, he loved medicine, studying, and working. So it worked for him. But really think about it..Shane speaks the truth

Shane Hummus - The Success GPS it is a DO school, I would rather keep it private. I was not gonna apply to a foreign school even though I could have gotten in easily. MD schools are very competitive. Not only do they want the best, (3.7 is the median GPA) but they will want to diversify as well. So people that are less than unique will not get a shot as easily.
glad to hear your story, I went through the same thing as well, finding life meaningless until I found what I wanted to dedicate my life to! Going to start residency in 2 weeks!

I was a physics teaching assistant in college. That's how I met all the premeds (it's a pre-requisite for the MCAT.) Holy cow, I did not envy them: they had to apply to 15+ medical schools and some of them didn't get into any of them! I was a C-student and I still have a good-paying job because for engineering it's not that big of a deal.
It's a struggle! Know so many people that had to put their life on hold for 1,2,3 even 4 years because they applied and got rejected so many times
It cost me $4000 to apply for the privilege of getting to medical school.
With growing up when your only option is to become a doctor ,engineer, or pastor 😒

My MD told me that any school that wants a student besides Howard and maybe Duke, only cares about can you get large amount if loans 250-400k of loans. He said it was a good choice for him but he probably would have went another route! Only reason he wanted to become a MD is because every year for 3 weeks he goes back to Africa to give free healthcare to his small city back home. He said he still owes 100k in student debt, down from 388k after 6 years of practice. He said also there are only soo many Residency spots in the US for placement. He personally knows of 6 people after 7 years of graduating med-school, that they can't get a spot and they fall further down in rankings to get in a Hospital to train. Who the hell wants to gamble 500k in debt!? Glad I choose the Nursing route!

This was such a cool video and you basically stated everything that went through my mind when i decided to go the PA route! I was fixated on becoming a doctor (my parents literally said id be a docotor on the day i was born -wtf?!) But only in 11th grade reality set in and i realized just how little chance i had to actually get into med school, never mind residency after looking at stats. I just didnt want to deal stresses about getting into college now, then med school, and then stress about residency again. Its seems so endless! Now im in 12 grade and just got into 4 direct entry PA 5/6 year programs and feel so relieved! I can do what i love (medicine) without spending my entire 20s stressing about the next program i need to compete to get into.

@@ShaneHummus their delusion was truly out of this world lololol but at least I actually love medicine & going to that so they're not too hurt. I still have 2 months of high school so I haven't started my program (though my graduate seat is reserved), but I think getting accepted into a direct entry PA program is so much easier then the traditional route. You're competing with high schoolers rather then professions with years of experience, so people that figure out what they wanna do early definitely have a advantage. My school accepted 25 people out of 800 applications after interviewing 50, so its hard but definitely easier then the normal PA school application process.

Wow. Well put together video! Currently a PharmD that decided I would’ve rather been an MD, starting med school this fall. you’re spot on about the Type A thing and sacrifice. I realized I couldn’t be a facilitator, I wanted to be THE guy, and lost a would’ve been fiancé in the process of deciding to go to med school. It’s not for everyone and yes, definitely need to research the decision before going into it.

It is weird, in my friends and family group everyone told me to not become a doctor and they all asked me: Do you really want to do this? Maybe I am an exception or my culture is different, but not everyone thinks being a doctor is a good profession. To be honest, it is really stressful. My mum is a doctor and she is working constantly, she never had time for us and my sister and I suffered during our childhood.

@@SixHundredAndSixtySix We're supposed to spread awareness that physicians lobby to keep the supply of doctors low, at the expense of people and patients, and to the benefit of their salaries $$$.
In the US they train for about 11-13 years. Other countries it can 3, 5, 8. The outcomes in many other countries is just as good as in the US. The salary in the US is about x2 what it is in other countries.
So dermatologists make about $350k+ when in other comparable parts of the world it would be $100-200k.

Short answer: probably don't go into pharmacy. Look at BLS statistics for pharmacy vs nurse practitioner or physician assistant

It took me a while to decide what I wanted to do for my life! I was so focused on being a doctor because I never did research and didn't know about all the career options that exist in the health care field! After doing my research I decided to become a nurse practitioner, everything you said is the truth! I realized I didn't have the passion to go through everything doctors have to do.

I had majored in biology during undergrad with the plan to go to medical school. Long story short, I decided to change my major to nursing because I volunteered at a hospital, and I was able to see the different roles of the healthcare professions. After becoming a nurse I am very happy with the decision I made. After working as a nurse for a few years, I decided to return to school to become a nurse practitioner. I am very happy with the decision I made. I will be graduating soon with less debt compared to the MD route, and I am sure of the career path I chose. I would recommend anyone interested in becoming an MD should volunteer/find a job within a healthcare setting to learn more about what it’s like to work as an MD or other healthcare professional to get an idea of what it is like to serve in that role.

I do have a childhood story and all that. But I believe I want to become a surgeon because I love the challenge that it comes with as well as the complexity of the human body. I know it sounds very cliche but I hope to get shadowing opportunities and figure out if I really want to do that.

I have two years left for graduating med school. I feel like preparing for war to study for my finals one month later. Just today, I was calling my mother about how stressed and confused I am. I said about five sentences and my mother interupts me, saying "Talk to your father." I said, it's okay, I said enough. I'm thirty nine, single, and used to have a good career in tourism and investing. Corona-19 stopped all that, so I went back to school, even though my talents are not in medicine for the most part. I am chasing a dream and wanting status and female attention. I honestly want to go back to tourism when the global economy stabilizes, perhaps be in medical tourism. Thank you for the great video. It's helping me go over the stress and loneliness.

You want female attention? Well, as a female I can tell you that I think doctors are not really attractive. You know why? They work tons of hours and it is not a family friendly profession. A female wants you to be confident and you can only be confident if you love what you are doing. My boyfriends profession is not listed as an attractive profession, he has a construction company, but he loves what he is doing, he is a business man and I think it is super sexy that he knows how to fix stuff. He did not went to college. That does not make him any less smart or attractive. Do what you love to do, that is what makes you a well-rounded person.

This is a really good video, I work in the OR for a few years now, sadly their are a shortage of alot of med staff especially now a days. But I do agree even though the surgeons/doctors I work with do an outstanding job for patient safety and health. But sometimes I see that their hurting, tired, restless. And usually anti social compared to other staff.
I became a doctor and I can't imagine doing anything else. Love every second of it. I could have also become a movie director
This is why I love Physician Assistant cos I get bored easily and never very want to be boxed up in one spot

I have considered going to Medical School upon the completion of my Chemistry Degree, but realized that I love the chemical component of medicine and am probably going to pursue my PharmD in Pharmacology. Medical School is very expensive, incredibly competitive, difficult, and not only do you need to complete 4 years of schooling, but an additional 2-6 years of residency depending on the field you choose. Plus the amount of student debt is insane. I'd rather have 45,000 debt upon graduating both my BSc Chemistry and PharmaD than to have 150k+.

THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU SAVED ME SO MUCH TIME! I'm currently at my premed 1st year but i only spent half a semester and already noticed how much dedication i needed to invest. The pressure was already there and it felt so wrong i never felt so forced in anything, I decided after finishing the 1st semester i'll shift to Chemistry, my real passion. Growing up in the asian side I'm not only influenced by my family but also by my peers and environment. They made it seem like doctors are like the must-have occupation, but after spending half a semester in my premed course I was instantly depress and tired all the time.
I’m a relatively new doctor, and I think this video is kinda harsh in the profession..but chemistry is pretty badass and really respectable, don’t hesitate at all to go down that path!

Hey thanks for the video, and the red flags helped me to rethink on things. The thing is, my parents actually don’t pressure me to be a doctor at all. My mom studied medicine and hated it and switched her career. I’m interested in medicine because I like taxonomy and have always loved nature documentaries. As for the respect and money, they’re not my main goals but are good additions.

Both of my parents are successful doctors, and as a child I always dreamt of being a doctor... but now I'm becoming more interested in other fields and careers, such as criminology, forensic psychology and physiotherapy. But my parents keep on telling me that those can be a backups in case being a doctor fails.
And my teachers continuously tell me that not being a doctor would be a waste of my intelligence and potential.
I genuinely don't what to do, because my worst fear is dissapointing my parents... and I feel like I might do that. :(

Great video. However, I do want to say that if you are an MD, DO, DDS, DMD, etc. and you have lost any love or passion or interest in your job, you can absolutely learn to love your career again (or begin to love it if you never truly did). My father is an ENT. He also further specialized in cancer surgery and then later facial plastics and reconstructive surgery. He lost interest in his career during his residency. However, he found a way to get past that, and it was through professional therapy and being open to new ideas. He found his love for it again. There are many good reasons people become physicians.

I am doing MD and I decided on medicine in year 11 i think. It was my second choice, first choice being agriculture. I know, it makes no sense.
I like being a doctor because I can help people with their health as much as i can. The idea that the more i learn and develop my skills, the more i can help is nice. And i like science.

As someone who was tricked into a somewhat useless degree path (Albright I beat the odds and got a job in my field anyway) I’ve would be interested to see if I could find something similar to my passion that is far more profitable

I will be becoming a doctor in the future and i will be the first in my family. I love this video because all of the bad reasons mentioned in this video mean nothing to me. They do not motivate me now and they never will but soooooo many people do it for these reasons. Also i love med school insiders and i respect kevins buisness savvy and knowledgeable approach but about a week ago i actually visited the site to see the cost of the packages and i literally laughed out loud and lost a bit of respect for him. Sad but true

Hey, I'm having a REALLY hard time being objective about myself and medicine. I'm a freshman in a BS/MD program, which has fortunately or not given me time to question my decisions. However, I feel like my feelings of depression, friendlessness, and fear in general of failure are making this really hard... I'm extremely indecisive, and have been thinking about not doing medicine for a year or more. If I don't want to do medicine, I definitely want to transfer out, and I'm not sure what else I'd do. Any advice for figuring this out, and being objective about whether medicine is right for me? For what it's worth, I'm good at math, like science, and like people. I'm pretty Type B. Sorry I'm rambling, unfortunately I'm unable to string together a normal sentence at the moment.
It's really person to person but you should look into NP or PA unless you're 100% committed to MD. Cheers!

Thank you for this video. Let’s talk about how much it’s going to be to even apply to med school. Typically, applicants apply to 15-20 schools. So the application fees are always so expensive, MCAT fees, also traveling to different states to go to in person interviews for the med school admissions (pre Covid) sooo much money 🤕

Great video, your content is really high quality. I was going to mention you said student loans "compound" daily which I don't think is correct. Federal student loans all use simple interest so your not getting charged interest on interest (compounding). I'm not sure if you mixed up the word "accrue" with "compound". Federal student loans accrue daily but they don't compound like some private loans might do.

For a video suggestion, I was wondering if at some point you could make a healthcare degree tier list (nursing, dental hygiene, public health, healthcare management, social work, etc.) sort of like how you did the engineering tier list. I know that 'healthcare' is a much broader term than 'engineering' is, but I would love to see a video like this!

Great video. Definitely smashed that like button. I am a ENFJ-A personality type so I really love to put people first and take the lead. I’ve worked a career for the pass 8 years and hadn’t enjoyed it now considering going back for PA, NP, or aiming even higher for more of a challenge a CRNA. With all that rambling I want to say thanks for the video. And maybe do a series of videos for each of the Myers and Briggs 16 personality types, outlining maybe best jobs worst jobs and pay for them. Thanks again for the vid post.

This is precisely the reason why I chose to major in biomedical engineering as an undergrad. Biomedical engineering is honestly a pretty bad major if you want to get an engineering job, because you learn a little bit of everything and not enough of anything (when I say engineering job, I meant a job that involves building and designing things; biomedical engineering isn't actually that bad if you're trying to go into consulting or working for the FDA). However, majoring in biomedical engineering allowed me a chance to still pursue my interests in engineering while at the same time fulfilling the premed requirements. In my case, I still had to put in a lot of extra work for the premed requirements because I wasn't required to take organic chem but there are bioengineering programs that have a lot more overlap with the premed requirements.
This would not have been possible if I was to major in biology because biology requires you to take a lot of additional bio classes that have little to do with premed and even less to do with engineering. I could've majored in an engineering major and do premed on the side but that's a lot more work than doing biomedical engineering because you have to complete the engineering coursework on top of premed courses.
The end result was the biomedical engineering degree offered me the option of either going into engineering or going through with the med school admissions route.
In the end I chose to go onto grad school to do a computer science masters degree because I want to work with artificial intelligence and machine learning but I don't regret making the choice to go into biomedical engineering, I regret staying with it for so long especially since I knew I wanted to get into CS after my freshman year and I could've switched majors without losing any credits, but then again if I were to switch, I doubt I would have had the opportunity to work on a senior design project that exposed me to machine learning like the one I worked on for my final year in biomedical engineering.
For those of you who read my comment and are thinking about doing one of the two alternative options to what I did, here's my take on that:
1. The biology major: if you choose to major in biology, you really have to be all in on going into a health care profession. It is not easy to make the transition from bio into engineering. The reason why it's hard to make the transition from bio into engineering is because biology requires more memorization, and engineering requires much more logical reasoning. This naturally leads to the difference in the methods of studying for the two fields, biology will require you to make a lot of flashcards and read and memorize your notes, whereas engineering will require you to do more practice problems in order to truly understand the logic. And hence why a lot of bio majors are completely garbage at math, physics, and computer science.
2. Taking premed courses along with your engineering coursework: this option is actually the best option, it's even better than biomedical engineering because it gives you solid job opportunities AND you get the option of continuing onto the medical school admissions track, and in some cases it actually might help you stand out from other applicants when medical school admissions committees are looking at your application. However, the downside is it's more work than just majoring in biomedical engineering and biology. But if you do choose to go with this option, my number one advice would be to do your premed courses during the summer, I did organic chem 1 & 2 summer of my freshman year, biochem and cell bio summer of my sophomore year, and microbiology and genetics summer of my junior year and it was hard but it was doable.

@@AB-sr4xd like i said, bioengineering is pretty shitty if you're trying to get an engineering job. it's not bad if you want to work for the FDA, the USPTO, or go into consulting, but again, i wouldn't consider any of those jobs to be engineering jobs because you're not designing or building anything.
other engineering disciplines you should consider would be computer science and computer engineering because both majors have excellent job opportunities.
as for keeping up your GPA, it's doable but it will require a lot more work. for example, if you're trying to major in CS and do your premed requirements, you're essentially putting in an extra semester of coursework because most (if not all) of the premed courses with the exception of calc 1 & 2 and physics 1 & 2 are probably not going to count towards your CS degree so if you want to keep your GPA up, you should figure out a way to spread out your coursework, that way, you don't have to end up taking organic chem in the same semester with hard CS courses like algorithms...
my advice to you would be to take courses over the summer. whichever courses you find easier, take those during the summer, whichever ones you need more time with, take it during the year. now keep in mind that it's not always possible to do that, especially as you get into your junior and senior year. for example, in my case, i had no choice because my bioengineering courses are only offered during the year, so i had to take my premed courses during the summer. so sometimes you're just going to have to suck it up and push through those difficult semesters.

Can’t tell if I’m in it for the wrong reasons. Doing the same thing over and over is excruciating and I’m willing to put in the schooling to overcome that. Doctor’s jobs change by the hour depending on patient. I feel much more focused on attending to others rather than a company’s objective

I agree with a lot that you said. That being said its still what I am hell bent on doing, I came into undergrad studying Biochemistry Cell and Molecular Biology with the idea that I would want to work in a laboratory developing vaccines. I still think that is an awesome field that a lot of people love but I wanted to do that because I didnt think I was smart enough for medical school but I had a passion for medicine. I learned you do not have to be Einstein to become a physician I am working so hard and got myself the scores, gpa, clinical hours, and shadowing that has me on track to get admitted to at least one medical school. If med school doesn’t work out I will be perfectly happy and content going to either PA or nursing school.

I work as an agency surgical radiographer now. Originally I applied for med school with an interest in radiology. I was talked out of by a friend who was 3rd year med school to find an allied health career instead.
I thank him every day. There are many alternative careers in healthcare nowadays

Big Facts! Working in Healthcare IT, I work relatively close with MDs in different practices. I can say that your primary care physicians are SPENT. 10-11 workdays (even at home), coworkers becoming bothersome, corporate conjuncture (Often times in meetings with higher-ups in the medical group after work hours about insurance), credentialing, job goals, actual rivalries with other MDs within or outside of the practice, and then there's me, the guy who has to tell them that the software that they use to record medical information is being updated and some fuctionality may change with the applications. Tough.
NPs and PAs do virtually the same thing but they seem happier. The only difference is that they can't prescribe schedule 2 drugs (which also gets delegated to the MD as well along with their usual workload).

great video, i only heard the truth! Here in my country i spend 4 years applying to med school and this year i finally got accepted. During those 4 years of trying many things happened, but i dont think someone that has a really superficial reason to become a doctor would spend so much time trying if it wasnt what they wanted. The selection is already a way to filter who has the commitment on become a doctor and the ones who wants for the wrong reasons. During those 4 years i was extremely open minded about so many other professions i could possibly try and many others i really enjoyed, but i still didnt feel it was the profession i wanted to have for a life - not as being a physician. It's not about helping people, because every single profession helps people somehow, ones more directly others in different ways. But i decided it seeing how active and vast the profession. Using the deep scientific knowledge and applying it in treatments for people is what fascinates me so much. I intend to become also a researcher and figure out ways of discovering treatments that can reach the most number of people out there. The specialty, i honestly have no idea yet and i want to take many years in med school figuring out which one would be the best for me and my lifestyle. The thing that worries me the most, as you said, is the 100% dedication with your work. I want to have a family and do many things outside it and i already feel like i will have to make so many sacrifices. My husband is extremely supportive and he was with me since i started applying for med school, so i'm extremely lucky to have him and supporting me. Alone i wouldn't have done it for sure. Even so, seeing those sacrifices and negative aspects, being a physician still is the only profession that satisfy me intelectually and personally. And i tried many others, i guarentee you. The amount of personal growth, commitment and work i already experienced made me have more sure of it. I cried many times, all the times i was not accepted wishing that i could do some other profession so i wouldnt feel bad about giving up my wish. But deep down i knew what i really wanted and how misearable i would be doing something else than not being a physician.

Doctor speaking. Totally true. Very useful video. As a psychiatrist I can tell how much suffering a wrong choice can bring in this profession. Unless you love medicine, MANAGE your career EXTREMELY well AND pay rigorous attention to your physical and mental health don't ever be a doctor!Before go to med school talk to every doctor you can and (I don't know if it is possible at most countries) go to hospitals and clinics and observe the routine until have a very clear idea about it because most people will spend 6 years and pay just to learn that they don't like it. But if you do councious decisions before and throughout your career it tornout to be very satisfying.

I absolutely agree with you Shane, I was soo pressurized by my parents relatives and some strangers idek to become a doctor and I rlly couldn’t see myself there. From the time I was like born my dad wanted to make me a doctor, coz it was his dream and he couldn’t be one. So I was basically brainwashed by my own parents to become a doctor coz its respectful and shit and i foolishly believed more like , made myself believe that it was what I wanted. When I finished highschool I realized it wasn’t for me . It was so hard to figure out wt to do coz I still wanted to be in the health care field but just not a doctor or a nurse then finally I made a decision to study health sciences and I’m gonna pursue it next year. Hope I do well😭
And others please don’t become a doctor when u actually don’t want to:)
