Climbing Capitol Peak- The Full Experience!!!

- Climbing one of Colorado's most difficult and dangerous 14ers with Davis Butte. The Beautiful hike in, amazing camping, fun climbing, exciting ascent, bear encounter, and more made for quite the epic adventure!
This is by far the craziest way to do knife’s edge I’ve ever seen. Most people scramble along the side. Mad props.
Gosh, it sad that today 09/03/2022 we lost a hiker who was trying to hike this peak ; may her soul rest in peace.
Me on knife edge: On all fours, moving an inch at a time, gripped the whole way.
These guys on knife edge: Tightrope walk the dang thing! ;)
Mad respect.
Yeah that will be me too! I couldn’t believe they did that! 🤙
Very nice guys. It's not just the experience you'll need to make these 14er climbs. It's the altitude. I went to Co. after years in the Marine Corp. (At sea level) It's not just about being physically conditioned. These guys are from Co. You should spend some time there before such an adventure. I moved on to Mt. but have great memories from 20 yrs. in the Co. Rockies. Great video.
The standing backflips were awesome! Great video.
Mad respect... but, you are both crazy!!! Enjoyed the video. Great job.
10:35 The rock can be very loose on those edges. Great video, but the Knife's Edge is no joke!
You guys are risking your precious lives for nothing walking over thin rock like that.
Agreed. Shouldn't be setting the example of not maintaining 3 points of contact, just so you can look cool and casual in the face of extreme danger. Granted, the Knife Edge has the reputation of being more solid rock, but why tempt fate to look cool?
Double agreed, and I’m not sure what shoes they had on but not what I would wear to do some class 4/5 scrambling. The balance beam walk was a poor choice. One misstep and that’s it.
If your not living on the Edge......…...your taking up Entirely too much room.
Or if there's a wind gust
@@HighSpeedNoDrag lol Keep doing what they are and the room they take up will be a permanent one.
You can be in the best shape, have the best balance, experience, confidence, etc.
Regardless, while the odds are incalculable, trapsing across that path that way, the odds of death are high, as demonstrated by the comments at 14:54.
May have been one of the people seen at 14:36.
That being said, do I wish i were as skilled, adventurous, brave, etc. as those two?
You bet.
Yt copyrights must’ve had a field day with this
Wow, love your vibe, great video.
Great video and great musical accompaniment.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Great video!. Alot of 14ers videos tend to disappoint. You guys had perfect balance of vids, commentary, scenery, info, etc. I did Capitol solo. Wasn't intending to but my partner never showed up at the Lake so I pressed on. Don't listen to all the haters. Like all activities, what may be insane, stupid and dangerous for someone who has little, no experience may a very calculated and relatively 'safe' endeavor for someone else who is experienced. Just cuz some overweight dude sitting on his couch in Florida thinks it's irresponsible (and for him it WOULD be), he is merely projecting his own abilities, experiences, personal fears and such upon you. You clearly are very experienced and seemed quite rational in your approach. They are the ignorant ones, NOT you. Keep on adventuring!
Ahh... I remember doing this back in the days when I was young and brave. Great video!
Excellent video of your climb-and music choice. So you're gymnasts with great balance and endurance. Nice flips on the summit. Your video peppered with enthusiasm was captivating.
Tony Condon Thank you!
I wholeheartedly agree! Thank you for taking viewers along. :)
The age of social media has caused people to take chances beyond their ability, hence death and injury. Before SM we earned our chops. Start with the easy ones, gain confidence and skills and know when not to exceed your ability. I took the crash course and climbed maybe half and quickly advanced to technical climb like 5:10. I even hired a pro climber who taught me rope craft and all about hardware choices. I always climbed within my ability, and only fell once. Because I knew how to set pro I’m still here to talk about it. Interesting fact. Ice climbing is inherently easier than rock because you can choose your route. On rock the rock chooses for you.
9:36 I'm 54 and did my 1st 14er last September 4.. I built myself up to it over 6.months. No way would I be ready for something like that Knife's Edge, even after what I've already done.
jeremy shull is the man who lost his life that day. Lost it doing what he loved I hope :^/
are you for real? omg RIP Jeremy

Some people survive suicide attempts. That doesn’t mean they weren’t suicidal. Where do you draw the line?
Great video guys. Love the vlog style. Don’t see that often with hiking videos. Just did my first little taste of class 4 on Mt. Lindsey!
Some savagery right there!! Congrats guys! 🧡
I know this is an old video, but I’m headed out there this summer from Pennsylvania and videos like this one get me so pumped up. Definitely not doing capital because I am not that experienced, but looking to do storm peak which is a smaller peak next to Longs and maybe do some of longs and stop at the keyhole. Don’t want to push myself into areas where I am not experienced in.
That cold water had to feel so good after all that hiking
Serious balls walking that edge!
awesome! nice to see footage beyond the knife edge.
Casually hiking the hardest and most dangerous 14er in Colorado… I took a leisurely stroll up Pikes Peak one time, but I’m not nearly skilled enough to conquer this one.
My god I thought this was a video with Joel Taylor, storm chaser, Reed Timmer's friend who has since passed away. At 1:38 looks just like him.
I watching this Video, because I cant have adventures like this myselfe.
Why not
Doing this hike in a couple of weeks. Curious if the trail is hard to follow on your way to the summit
Nick Strasburg Nice, it’s a lot of fun! If you don’t know where to go it’s very hard to follow. Keep in mind it’s not really a “hike” and there isn’t much of a trail, it’s more of an exposed scramble up a cliff face. Do your research and make sure you know exactly where to go- 14ers.com is an excellent resource(find the Capitol Peak page and study the route, I always print out the description). Have fun and be safe!
I drove up the road to the TH in my Nissan Murano AWD. I don’t see how those little cars can get there without any damage. Love the video!!!
Great video! I won't be climbing Capital Peak any time or if ever.
Thank you for sharing, so that I can live vicariously through you, bro.
I don't get how this video doesn't have more views...fearless
these guys are idiots. It's reckless and stupid.
I think these guys had bad route-finding on the upper section of the peak. This can be done "no-hands" and on pretty good rock all the way to the top if you stay on the ridge crest longer before going across the face. That said, the knife edge gymnastics were impressive.
Jim We took a harder variation on purpose. I had already been up the standard route before, and wanted a little more spice this time.
@@AdventuresToTheMax Cool! Hence the name Adventures To The Max . :) When I did it we came up from Pierre Lakes which is the basin between Capitol and Snowmass. That route variation could be called "Talus Hopping To The Max."
Jim Awesome! Pierre Lakes Basin looks really cool! I almost went through it the first time I did Cap so we could link it with snowmass, but ended up not. Super bummed I didn’t, I’ll have to make it back sometime. I have heard it’s quite adventurous haha
So there not a loop
Excellent video. To walk the knife edge as you did is seriously dangerous. One wind gust or slip and you're dead. A little fear is what keeps us in check and alive. Nice job nonetheless with the rest.
OMG, the best 14er video EVER. PERIOD.
Aaron Beepdoo Thank you!
is it possible to day hike this? with 4am start?
I'd start at 2-2:30 am or even earlier depending on how much hiking/climbing experience you have and the pace you'll be keeping. I usually do 2.5 miles per hour (before the climbing part starts) so this gives me plenty of time to stop in places to enjoy the views and capture some amazing shots.
@@bobthenoob05 struck by lightning. have climbers been struck before. i thought lightning strike actual hits were like winning the lottery., no?
@@harpoon_bakery162 yes, many have been struck and it's not just being struck but the stress of _maybe_ being struck and of all the troubles of wet rock
Climbed Capitol on clear day in mid-August of '77, we did it in one shot, although we skirted K2 instead of going over it, and we got back to the car well after dark. On the way back right at dark, just as we were cutting underneath K2, it started snowing heavily, big flakes, the steep rocks got really slick, and my friend said, "I can't go on". I reminded him in no uncertain terms that he had no choice. Back then we had the whole mountain to ourselves, didn't run into anyone else.
My cousin Jay Gelvin climbs those mountains. He trains people to climb mountains...
When you meet up with him: Tell him his cousin Patrick, from Oklahoma, says hi and to be a careful climber.

Hey what time of year did you do this? I'm thinking about going in early October.
ZSTuthill This was in early August. I highly recommend not going in October, as there will likely be snow by then, making it much more dangerous, and the weather is less stable. Early September is a great time, as the weather is usually amazing. Pick a good weather day and do your research on the peak and you’ll have an awesome time. Have fun, it’s a great peak!
no no no - that's too late
Dont you know your suppose to do a hand stand on the ridge for a selfie , same with the top of the wetterhorn .
Nice! Great job guys!
Great video. Watched it alot then the next year 2018 did a solo of the mountain. Amazing mountain.
Thanks for the video !
So I've been watching a lot of Capitol videos and Knife Edge. OK long question in short, is it instant death if you slip, for either side?
It depends on the place, but there are definitely some sections where yes, if you slipped and didn’t catch yourself, it would be a LONG way down.
Do people rope up to do the knifes edge?
Randy S A lot of people do. I did the first time I went up, but this time I didnt. Just depends on your experience, comfort with exposure, and risk tolerance. The knife ridge is very exposed, but it’s one of the easier sections of the ridge. I thought the upper face was much steeper, looser, and more dangerous climbing wise.
You guys are amazing!!!!
What time of the year was this?
August 2017
I was loving the video until I saw blue jeans and tennis shoes. But, great editing and entertainment... loved the bear.
The shoes the kid in jeans has are 5ten guide tennies made for technical approaches for rock climbing... you should think that track pants and running shoes are stupid.
I'm sure the blue jeans and tennis shoes were just for the camera, hiking outfit & shoe gear would have been necessary and mandatory. They did the standing backflips in the youtube clothing, but helmets would have been worn while actually climbing...and of course, the one guy wouldn''t have been able to survive with just tennis shoes up there.... Capitol Peak is a real brutal summit that you can die on VERY easily or get permanently maimed (wheel-chair rest of life). The standing back-flips would have been practiced over and over off camera at the campsite, I'm sure they rehearsed that ad-nausea and prepared their bodies for months for this climb.....it is no-joke and requires absolute complete fitness and youth. You won't see older climbers on this one. 35 and under for the most part. (not saying that older climbers can't do it, but each month older than 35 you are, you are risking more ). Study the route over and over and over from websites and please , for God's sake, if you don't have a good memory, climb with someone who does...you MUST remember the plan and route (by having a photographic memory).
NOT at ALL suggested for beginners ...we climbed in Sept 99' .....ALWAYS check the weather ..trust me , you DO NOT want to be stuck in a rain storm up there ... I would also highly suggest camping at the lake overnight ....we also went swimming in Capitol lake ...breathtaking cold to say the least but we were used to cold water dips .... The summit was AMAZING but the BEST part if you're very lucky is to GLISSADE the snowfield on the (opposite side of the lake) going back down several hundred feet .... a life changing experience but be forewarned d .. the exposure on the knife edge is REAL and you must be prepared
Great job guys! Very well detailed video, great beta and info. Keep it up!
Thank you!
You deserve so many more subs bro
Was that a geocache at the summit?
It’s a summit register. Many of the 14ers have one so you can sign your name
Damn, how did the person fall?
The news article I googled for his name mentioned that he slipped on an approach to K2 and fell into a crevasse. And he was in such a way that it was dangerous in the conditions that they waited a couple of days for recovery for the recovery team's safety - but he was triage assessed on the mountain. (his name is mentioned up top of the comments.)
Do none of you think it was weird the way he literally laughed it off that someone he'd probably seen on his hike up there had fallen off the knife age and was dead, and he's just laughing and jumping into the lake like nothing happened? that some fucked up bullshit.
Great video! Someone fell off right in front of you? That would haunt my dreams. Not everyone should be doing something like this definitely need experience preferably climbing. Can't wait to climb it when I'm in CO next
No. Not "preferably climbing". You NEED CLIMBING EXPERIENCE, and a lot of it, to do this, safely. Do not attempt this peak if you aren't a skilled climber, routefinder, in excellent shape, and have many other 14ers under your belt.
Headed for it today after work breaking trail @ 3
You guys are really amazing!!
Kiran Kinhal Thank you!
You guys are awesome! Davis's Mom (we are cousins) sent this to me and I watch it many times. I love the music too! Any more adventures in sight?
great video!
What a beautiful video. Thank you for letting me experience it through your lens. Had it all...Commentary, Music, Aptly selected songs, Spectacular scenery and an amazing hiking / climbing experience.
Intrepid! The best Capitol Peak ever! Thank you.
Good stuff 🤙
Loved the video. I hoping to get to Capitol soon. Great job guys, congrats!
you guys are beasts!
Why would they do that!!!!! In the intro of the video the person is just balancing on that thin edge, why...Why, they're playing w thr life!
Israel Rodriguez Well, if I were a psychiatrist, my diagnosis would be, “utter and complete madness with no recognition of self imperilment”!
......and I wouldn’t be far from the mark!
You really ought to warn people not to do what you did in the intro. Balancing like that on the knife edge is how you die
You can actually walk across the knife edge if you're an experienced climber -- this does not advocate non-experienced climbers to try doing the same. Climb to the left of the knife edge so the wind doesn't knock you right off :P
@@sherfithasan One wrong step and it's over. And people make wrong steps all the time. No, thanks. You can kind of get a sense of their youthful cluelessness in how the guy talks about the "rescue, hopefully" and then just writes it off. "Yeah, a guy died, but what a great day."
Thank You for a Great Video. Beautiful! I have not yet done Capitol and it intimidates me thinking about it based on its deadly history. Awesome Job and Congratulations!!!
Guys be careful you guys can fall very easily those rocks don’t look to stable and even the slightest wrong move can mess you up if you slip the chances of you grabbing on to the peak and getting back up is slim
I wish everyone came as well prepared for this hike as you two did, great work.
Epic Screen name Thank you!
Damn dude awesome! (It's Brendan by the way). I was just there a few weeks ago when I did a four pass loop extension that went by capital. I was considering climbing up to K2 for sunrise but didn't because that same day I had to hike all the way to Geneva Lake. I'll have to come back for a sunrise on K2!
Thank you! If you end up going back for sunrise on K2, I'd love to join you!
I'll let you know! later in September or October I'll probably camp on top of a 14er if you'd like to come. I've camped on top of Torreys and Elbert. It's the most amazing thing EVER!
One Bad Idea Awesome! I've been dying to that for a long time
Great effort guys and entertaining vid! This peak is on my hit list. Do you have a link for Jinglepunks - Surreal Sorroundings?
Mark Kosmider Thanks! There isn’t a link for the song, but if you make a jingle punks account, you should be able to search for it once your signed in
Thank you.
nice job
El lugar hermoso, pero muchas cosas podían haberlas hecho en un circo.
Good video skills but poor decision making. Jeans, tennis shoes, appears one of you didn't have a helmet and the other only had one to mount a go pro! Further, a climber fell, presumably died, while you were on the peak, and you appear glib in recognizing that someone just died or was permanently injured, a few thousand feet from you on the same peak. Theres no "oh crap that could have been us", or even a "we feel bad for them and their family", reaction. Just, "eh, hey look, a helicopter, I guess someone died". Also, walking the knife edge like a tight rope is stupid, and unnecessarily risky. I get that parts of it are walkable, and you may have amazing balance and be able to walk the whole thing--kudos. But, it is really expensive, and dangerous, to run rescue missions for fallen climbers, and showing videos like this may encourage others to follow that cavalier lead, thereby increasing the likelihood of other people needing to be rescued....or worse. Finally, consider hiking boots and clothing. You're a climber, stop worrying how you'll look on Instagram. They make them for this purpose. What would you do if your sneaker cut open on a sharp rock?
Casey Dorn Ya, I was pretty surprised and disappointed that morning when my friend put on jeans and had no helmet. If I had known earlier I would’ve made him go back and get a helmet. I now bring extra helmets/gear in the car. Also- this isn’t my first rodeo. I finished all the 14ers when I was 12, and have done plenty other more technical/dangerous peaks since. This was just a casual fun day out. I do see your point on setting a bad example though- I’ll try and be better at that next time.
Adventures to the MAX, Casey is a complete jackass for making negative comments about your accent. Don't apologize to that fool, always a holy than thou hater out there. I keep my expectations low with so many shitty 14'er videos out there, yours was seriously one of the best out there, keep up the good work my friend. We all have our own way of getting to the places we go in life, as well as dealing with death, there is no wrong way. Your approach to climbing Capitol Peak was perfect and authentic, two dudes living life fully and having a spectacular time doing it. Hey Casey, and the two douches who liked your comment, ever hear of natural selection? You're probably the assholes going 20 mph up I-70 in a drizzle, in the fast lane, holding up traffic asking your GPS to save you. Surprised you didn't lecture the boys on the dangers of swimming in a mountain lake without a PFD and a helmet. I climbed Capital in 85 in Chuck Taylors with no hands, my pecker hanging out and no water bottle, and a bee stung my ear hole, all without health insurance~
@@AdventuresToTheMax Thank-you for being honest. Now set a better example. People's lives may depend on it.
that was really dumb walking across the kinfes edge
If you didn’t do it, you don’t get to criticize the brave men who did, coward.
@@arrenoflaedenuar6886 Anyone can have an opinion. And, what you call brave others may call stupid.
Especially for any man with a 2 month old child...
Seems like it’d be dumb not to
Respect for those who try it, but no thanks...I'm not quite that crazy yet!
So cool guys. Apart from the person falling.
Hikers think in your family!
Guys stop saying it’s irresponsible, it’s what they want to do because they enjoy it like me. Doesn’t make someone crazy just means someone enjoys it
I would so do that hike if i wasnt so scared of heights hahah make a video of the colorado trail!
Great content! Looking to start hiking more 14ers this summer
They make it look so easy. I’d love to try this but I’m just not ready.
Do crestone
Jackal Gold Kick Archives I have- One of my favorites, but unfortunately I wasn’t into filmmaking yet. I’ll probably be there soon to do a different route though!
An amazing video. The content i want to create someday. I am a coloradoan, so it should be easy.

Young and clueless. “Look at me”. Pride, pride, pride. Wonder if the person who fell was thinking “totally worth it” on their way down.

You take unreasonable risks to make videos encouraging others to do the same. Don't add to the dangers to climbing this beautiful mountain.
Hiking in blue jeans is awful.
Thinking you need special pants for ‘hiking’ is hilarious
Peccato che facendo questo si crepa giornalmente ma l'importante è non parlarne altrimenti il turismo sacro ne risente $$$ :
