I take issue with the idea that Dean never, well almost never, lost his cool. There is a clip from a special that was probably back in the fifties where Dean was trying to sing a serious song and Jerry was clowning around, distracting the crew and just being a fool. The look on Deans face was a look that you do not want to see from a former prize fighter like Dean. Dean Martin took his singing very seriously as is obvious by his success.

I think McQueen clearly beat Dino as a believable and intense action star. But Martin was more multitalented and his singing made him a pretty cool guy.Very different, but both cool cats.🤣

Dino all day! I love em both, but I’m Italian so I’m biased. I did see in an Apocalypse Now doc where McQueen came off as a Hollywood pain in the butt. It changed my view on him a bit.

If Dino wasn't so cool, it probably would have sucked that Elvis himself dubbed him King of Cool only for McQueen to show up, claim the title, and later even get attached to the moniker the Cooler King.

I attended a taping of the Dean Martin Show in the (early sixties) and it was three hours of pure joy. He talked to the audience on nearly every break, of which there were many. Dino gets my vote. Steve was a different kind of cool, very macho and "mysterious".

I always enjoyed both of them a lot back in the day. Yes two very different types of cool!

    Thank you for this video.
When I was a young elementary-school kid, a television rerun of the movie "The Great Escape" came on one weeknight, and all of the boys spent the following day marveling and recalling the exploits of the character played by Steve McQueen. It was the scene in which his character rode the motorcycle into the barbed wire which cemented him as the coolest film personality that ever was and probably ever will be. Now keep in mind this is from the point of view of boys at a young age, under 12 years old, but this episode formed the aesthetic of what is cool to a generation of young males. Movies like "Bullit" and "The Thomas Crown Affair" only added to the cool persona.
In conclusion, the real Dean Martin really seemed like my type of person. Dean Martin was definitely a cool person, but the king of cool is Steve McQueen. May they both rest in peace.
    Keep up the good work.

Great comment! Thanks! Yes, McQueen was in some awesome films. A while back I found his old TV series, "Wanted: Dead or Alive" and It's fun to see how he grew as an actor.

Steve McQueen was a really good actor and he passed away way too soon. But Dean Martin has been my King of Cool pretty much all my life. I've been collecting Dean Martin's recordings, movies, television shows etc. since I was 8 years old. Well over 50 years now. Dino has my vote.

Dean Martin said "you're not drunk if you can lay on the floor and not fall off the Earth"
Steve McQueen wins easily, he was the king of cool, Dean is the voice of Olive Garden

I am a huge fan of both Dean Martin and Steve McQueen, and they are both cool beyond compare. I'll throw in another name, George Peppard. Pretty cool dude.

Steve McQueen’s ego was bigger than Texas and it spoiled some of the films he appeared in. For example, The Great Escape where McQueen is the only one wearing a faded red long sleeve t-shirt while everyone else were wearing blues and khaki. He also threatened a big huff if he wasn’t on the horse drawn hearse in The Magnificent Seven. Yul Bryner was the lead but McQueen wasn’t having that.

I'll have to agree with much of what you stated, I came across a lot of stories regarding his difficult behavior. He had a chip on his shoulder throughout most of his life that made him difficult to be around for many. It was great to learn that he appeared to change a lot of that the last part of his life.

I’ve been a big fan of both for years, and I still am. But who truly deserves the title "King of Cool"? Let’s break it down.
First, Dean Martin. When Sammy Davis Jr. wasn’t invited to the White House to celebrate JFK’s victory-despite all he'd done to help JFK get elected-Dean, who was invited, flatly said, “No Sammy, no Deano.” Now that’s loyalty, kids. Dean also showed real class by halting the Matt Helm movies out of respect for Sharon Tate after her tragic death. And let’s be honest, how many people could handle Jerry Lewis’s bullshit for ten straight years?
Now, let’s talk about Steve McQueen. Many great movies, no doubt, but he had a reputation for being insecure and often acted like a prima donna on set, add to that some domestic issues-not exactly cool. However, he was undeniably passionate about racing. Movies like On Any Sunday and Le Mans showcase this passion. Sure, many might not have seen them, but I did, and they were undeniably cool.
So, who’s the true "King of Cool"? It’s a close call, but Dean’s loyalty, class, and patience make a strong case.
