    Classic Game Room reviews VECTORMAN for Sega Genesis from 1995 by Blue Sky Software. Stunning platformer shows what the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) could do later in its life with brilliant level designs, stunning music and solid game play. Vectorman fights robots to save future Earth while smashing TVs and collecting things for big points.

      I got this game for Christmas 95 as well, we already had a Saturn and Panzer Dragoon and such for the Saturn, but I saw this game in action and asked for it from my dad, he was like “are you sure you don’t want a new Saturn game instead?” And I said “all the good Saturn games are coming out next year anyway, this looks really cool, so yeah, I’ll take this.” And I remember when we fired it up he was super impressed with it, “wow, this looks as good as any of the 2-D games the Saturn has so far!” The sequel was great too, my dad got that one as a surprise for me, because we only had a Saturn at his house, but I had a genesis at my mom’s and my brother and I shared a nomad.

    Was introduced to this via Sega channel commercials. I was a SNES boy in the 90s, so I never got to play it until recently. I really like it... Crisp graphics and smooth animation. This game took advantage of the Genesis' power.

    I feel like right now would be the time to bring back Vectorman. Nostalgic properties are all the rage, it's becoming increasingly easy for games to be developed cheaply and quickly, and it would be a great digital download. (Package the original two games and a new third game for $15 or so... I'd pay for it.) They could easily find any one of a number of indie developers to create a kick-ass new 2D (or 2.5D) Vectorman, and have it turn out quite good. (And they could have a lot of fun with it by really playing up the 90's-ness of the property with it's visuals, techno-soundtrack, etc. Make it a loving tribute to old 90's cheese and classic platformers.)

    I played this game everyday after work for hours trying to perfect it. After beating the game my goal was to beat the game using one life. Well I succeeded and since 1995 I haven't played any video games at all. I have never even played Madden Football with my sons , that shows how addictive Vectorman was to me.

    Funny that you mention the ill fate of Vectorman. I kind of know what happened to him.
    It was in an old gameinformer magazine but I think it's also cataloged on Wikipedia.
    They had plans to make a third vectorman game and even just some publicity photos for it and everything but a couple problems arrived.
    Like Mark stated the change to 3d was being pushed on the design so it was going out of the vector 2d graphics to be 3d. Was it going to keep the vector style in 3d? Hard to say from stills.
    The change in dimension wasn't the only thing though. Vectorman was made into more of a 3rd person shooter if memory serves.
    This leads up to the last problem with Vectorman that got it shelved and why it may never return. The lack of detail on the character in the first two titles was doable but approaching the changes he started to look like another green man on campus. Yes that's right. There was a problem coming up with him appearing like Master Chief from Halo and in the face of this problem they opted to just not finish development of the game.
    Yet another classic Sega icon relegated to the past without a chance.

    I don't know, when this game came out platformers were on their way out in popularity. Fighting games were getting their time in the sun and RPGs were getting bigger thanks to the CD format. If Sega had taken Vectorman to the Saturn as a launch title I think he would have had a stronger presence today.

      Sega of America was allergic to good decisions during the Saturn era. They obviously should have codeveloped Vectorman 2 for Mega Drive and Saturn with some exclusive content for each version. No Streets of Rage on Saturn either.

    This is one of my favorite games on the Genesis. This is also my father's favorite Genesis game. The action is fast and smooth. I don't like the top down levels (especially the one that resembles Frogger) and I don't like the randomness of this game but it is still a legendary classic that deserves more sequels and to be a household name.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 3 роки тому +4

      Sprites age better than polygons, this is a given. The PS1 did have some nice pixel art when there were 2D games made, like Gradius Gaiden.

    • @Thor-Orion
      @Thor-Orion Рік тому

      @@Bloodreign1 and Symphony of the Night? Haha. But it’s actually art direction that determines how well a game ages. A lot of games and devs made the jump to 3-D but didn’t have a solid art direction in mind so they have aged very poorly. But look at something like Panzer Dragoon and despite being clearly limited by the tech it was on, it still looks solid and plays great so has aged very well.

    I remember this game. In fact I have it right here. It was good. For the time the graphics were great, sound was great, lighting was great, and it was fun. Vectorman also had a bit of attitude which helped. I too wondered why they did not do anything more with the character.

      Because Sega of America is dumb. Vectorman DID the sales number that should have spawned a franchise. There WAS almost a movie about it though. Then when that got canceled they changed his name and design into Wall-E.

  • @chuckufarlie8215
    @chuckufarlie8215 4 роки тому +1

    I like that Vectormans character is not fleshed out at all, I think that's completely intentional.
    I think they were trying to make a game that celebrated video games in a kind of general generic way.
    It was late enough in the history of video games to have the perspective to do that, much like how at the start of the seventies you started having rock songs about the Rock and roll life style, the genre had traversed just far enough to gaze back and contemplate its own footprints, to regard the paths it had taken.
    I mean, Vectormans name makes me think of Vector graphics, for instance, and he *is* green...but he's round, and maybe that's more of a cyberpunk green which would speak of both the future and the games present in the fact that that had been a trend in those days.
    But much like how it's in the mold of a flashy arcade game while embracing it's home television venue, almost reminding one of some kind of earlier decade computer fiction (the arcades are in our dwellings in future!)
    I think it's an attempt to embrace the present and imagine a future and past.
    It reminds me of how, after the summer of love period in 66-67 bands like The Beatles and The Stones returned to Rock leaving psychedelia behind them, but Rock was different, and they were different.
    So they rocked different.
    Basically I'm saying he's an American Rock man...
    Heh.
    I'd hate to hear some flat go nowhere story like most games have about where he came from and where he's going.
    He's Vectorman and he lives in his computer world.
    Even to say that is too much.
    Vectorman doesn't have a story because he's like Pac-Man.
    He just _is._

    Vectorman wasn't my first game, but it was the first game that was *mine.* An old pawn shop owner let me and my sister pick out one game apiece for free. She chose a My Little Pony ripoff game (which was actually enjoyable, even if I felt ashamed playing it for her) and I chose... wisely. I still remember digging out my two broken SEGAs some years later to find that the oldest of the two worked. Briefly. For one day. Managed to get all the way past that damnable boss you were fighting at 3:07. Several years after that, some friends visited from out of state and brought BOTH Vectorman games. I beat them both in one night. It was a damn good night.
    I was probably five when I got the game. Maybe four. It was the late 90s. I didn't even know 3D games existed. Probably for the best, since even Mario 64 was overwhelming at age six.
    I used to sit on the floor in our kitchen and draw stuff like the railroad boss (it took me almost a year to beat the first level, so that second level seemed crazy... and awesome). Probably drew a hundred Vectormans in school and elsewhere. Vectorman was my shit. EDIT: And you know what? I think I'll draw him again. Right now.

    This is SOO ODD because I LITERALLY searched for and watched an earlier review for VectorMan a week ago, so I thought I was going crazy when I saw this in my feed! I loved this as a kid! I was born in the N64 age, but I played Genesis, NES, Gameboy, etc. at the right time, too! I love it! I wish it would return! VectorMan could have been in Smash! Hell, he could have been giving Mario a run for his money if SEGA would give him a chance! It's so cool! Never played the sequel, though.

      @@Lilbroda I’m a millennial. An older one though, so I played Sega Genesis and Saturn growing up. Genesis was my first console.

    Wow the animation on this game is flipping tight. Some might say better than some games released now

    I remember the contest for this game back in the day. It was hard as shit. So Sega had a contest going on. First person to beat the game got around $25,000. I came pretty close to wining the price money. It was the only time my old man approved of me sitting down in front of he TV all day long. Another thins is they tired turning Vectorman into a third person shooter back in the PS2 era. It was horrible and the project was scrapped. He had more of a Boba Fett vibe than Vectorman.

    Sega needs to re-release Vectorman with a good port and rekindle the love for Vectorman.

    Ray-man VS Vector-man NEEDS to happen. It's a geometry thing. Tangent-man can be a final boss, or like have two bosses, maybe tag-team battle with Sine and Cosine.

    I didn't even own a Genesis. I owned a Sega Nomad. I thought it was the coolest. I spent so much time playing this game on it.

    ABACABB... I can't remember what it does, but if you enter that at the title screen it does something like infinite lives, or continues. I loved this game back in the day. Too bad it has been lost to obscurity, because it's a freaking awesome game.
