Fun Fact about that song at the end that gives it a little more meaning: "A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square" was published in 1940. AKA one year before Crowley burned his feet on consecrated ground to save Aziraphale from Nazis and his books from being bombed. There's a theory that they danced to the song together later that evening and it became "their song" in their minds.

The Anathema Newton story line was the weakest part of the books. But it was better explained there. It was a parody of fated lovers, all the jokes about how disappointing she found Newton was were removed.

When you watch it back, you notice things like the inside of Crowley's color being tartan and not red and the lack of sashay as he walks and how cool and smooth he is with the demons. Though, this doesn’t have to initiate a romantic relationship between them, I think that it’s at least a good indication of a good relationship between them moving forward, even if only a platonic one.

    • @iesika7387
      @iesika7387 Місяць тому +7

Yeah, I think a lot of people who complain about Anathema and Newt miss the point that she’s actually never made any real decisions for herself in her life. When she declares Newt her boyfriend it has an edge of teen rebellion to it (Agnes only said they did it once, after all).
But the very first big decision she’s faced with, he encourages and supports her to think for herself. I do think they’re actually good for each other in whatever capacity they settle into (and apparently the sex is great!) But now they have a chance to actually get to know each other, and I feel like Newt is actually kind of a good set of training wheels for Anathema while she’s practicing thinking for herself. And her compassionate and unconventional practicality is good for helping him deal with all his self esteem issues. They’re well matched as friends at the least.

Unironically, I found that last moment with Shadwell and Tracy really sweet. The poor, lonely and crude old man finally accepting to let in some love into his life, he doesn't need that old soldier facade anymore since he clearly cares for her, as she does him. They've known each other for who knows how long 😂
But yeah- you should probably give that last switch up scene another go, it's really cool. S2 just gets better.

    • @iesika7387
      @iesika7387 Місяць тому +11

Their relationship also isn’t necessarily romantic or sexual. Deciding to get out of their current kind of unpleasant lives and just be there for each other without walls or pretenses can also just as easily be taken as friendship. Tracy is ready to retire from sex work and faking mysticism, Shadwell is ready to let go of his bluster and fear and anger and admit that he cares about this person who has always been kind to him. He comes to meet her on her own turf and her own terms, weapons laid aside. The fact the question he pops isn’t a proposal is significant in addition to the humor.
I know a lot of people in their 80s and up (my huge family skews old) who have settled into what we younger folks would probably call queerplatonic relationships where they pair up (or get together in small groups!) to mutually support and love each other without romance or sex. Getting old can be lonely, especially if your old friends and lovers are gone. Having a partner to face it with, even a nontraditional kind of partner, changes everything.

While I agree with what you're saying, I don't think what you're saying applies to comedy as strongly... and in this case, the relationship is not born out of dramatic build up, but because it is part of the humor of the story. The descendant of the man who killed the woman's descendant become a couple... it works very well in the overall fabric of the whole story - the whole nature of the book is to poke fun at the fanatical followers of religious texts that don't even remotely make sense... and having a descendant of the crazies fall for someone from the "other side" is really a thumbing of the nose toward those fanatics. It's part of the charm of the thing.
Again... you're not wrong about lazy writers doing terrible jobs with relationships, (and you're also not wrong about the assholes who would be outraged if it was a gay or bi couple) but I would argue this really isn't the title to hurl that against. This narrative really is more about an satiric assault on the religious book-thumpers (whatever holy book they choose to thump).
Also - Arcane is brilliant and everything you said about it is 100% volcanic truth. :)

Knowing what the rest of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s works are like, I agree that it’s likely the Anathema/Newton and Shadwell/Tracy relationships are intentionally stupid to go with the overall silliness of the book. At least that’s the interpretation I got from reading the book. I got a similar vibe from the show that the relationships are meant to be ridiculous (epitomised by Newton and Anathema having sex because a witch from hundreds of years ago told them to, or Shadwell asking Tracy how many nipples she has), but I suppose it could have been handled better to avoid confusion.

I'm not sure if someone mentioned this or if you already knew it, but the book "Good Omens" was co-written by two incredibly talented writers: Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett and Crowley was absolutely based a bit on Neil while Aziraphale was absolutely based a bit on Terry.

It honestly works too well, with Terry’s frequent public perception as a jolly man who wrote funny books (when Neil himself describes him as an extremely angry person) and Neil’s rep for dark work despite being such an absolute sweetheart.
To quote Terry himself on anger, from Wyrd Sisters (nominally a funny book spoofing Shakespeare):
“Genuine anger was one of the world’s great creative forces. But you had to learn how to control it. That didn’t mean you let it trickle away. It meant you dammed it, carefully, let it develop a working head, let it drown whole valleys of the mind and then, just when the whole structure was about to collapse, opened a tiny pipeline at the base and let the iron-hard stream of wrath power the turbines of revenge.”
Terry was very good at directing his anger productively.

In regards to your question about why Crowley looks so normal compared to the other demons, I will say that ALL demons are fallen angels in Good Omens, there are no hellborn. Most demons have some level of creature-ness to them, but most can disguise it a bit when they want. Hastur, Ligur, and Beelzebub all look more "normal" when on Earth than they do in Hell. Crowley has been on Earth pretty much nonstop since the beginning, so he's likely had more practice hiding his features, but he does have the things he can't hide, like his eyes and his tattoo. You can even see that when he's stressed out (like when he's driving the Bentley through the fire) his eyes go fully yellow because he can't devote as much energy to making them look more human. In the books, he also hisses when talking while stressed, and it is also implied that he doesn't actually wear shoes, just....has feet that look like snakeskin shoes lol
Ultimately I think it comes down to Crowley wanting to look as human as possible, because he loves Earth and humanity, so he makes more of an effort to keep his body looking less demonic.

    • @HuntingViolets

BOOK SPOILERS AHEAD NOTHING MAJOR BUT IF YOU WANT NOTHING SPOILED FROM THE BOOK SCROLL AWAY!!!
So the thing about Ana and Newt, they work better in the book. Ana feels sort of like it's her duty to hook up with Newt since Agnes predicted it, so there is already that. Also, the book goes on to explain how Ana feels that since the world is gonna end soon, Newt won't have the time to start anoying her (and hey, he may not be handsome but he is tall and dark haired, so 2/3 aint bad!) Afterwards it just kind of feels natural, the way they keep going together. Like they've gone through this massive thing together and now it's the first day of the rest of their lives! To highlight the fact that they aren't moving quite that fast even tho the start was fast, Newt is quick to correct that he and Ana aren't married when they get the delivery to the Jasmine cottage. It's prolly still anoying for many but I personally found their relationship in the book to have a certain sweetnes and dare I say, sillines that the series didn't quite capture
Idk this was just me rambling on, I hope someone can relate lol

I kind of feel like her disappointment with him in the book kind of makes it worse, and she's younger in the book too (not that you can't make decisions at 18 but she hasn't had much practice making her own decisions because of circumstances). The sex in the book (if I recall) seemed like a chore she had to get through. On the show, although they both know about the prediction, they don't just have sex because of the prediction; it at least seems to happen a bit more naturally in the storm with Newt bemoaning all the things he hasn't done and Anathema softening to him a bit. I do find it very interesting that Agnes has basically predicted they'll be married by the time her book arrives. This is basically the only thing she gets wrong, but it throws into question how good her second book was anyway. I really like these actors and I do think they basically work pretty well together, although I may be in the minority there.

@@HuntingViolets I do deffenetly see where you are coming from and that is a good point. I supose partvof the reason I liked the book version is because I am asexual and for me any sexual experience would be done as a "chore". I reckon Anas feelings seems familiar. I doubt that would be the case tho, if Ana hadn't had that thought about Newt not being that bad. Like if it was 100% het just doing a task, then I'd complitely agree with you.
But now to another thing, Agnes making a wrong prediction about the two of them being married:
This has bothered me a bit. Not this scene spesifically but others like it. There are a few lines that are said for laughs that I have a love-hate relationship with. The lines I am talking about are whenever Ana -or Agnes when she was alive- says stuff like "You are half an hour late"
It is anoying to me because no, Newt (for example) was late. Agnes was just a tiny bit off. It is sooo anoying! Like just say Agnes was a bit wrong, big deal she was still si close to the truth that it counts as impressive. ajahslahskådjssjaadjalädbs
But at the same time it does beautifully show how Ana has been taught that Agnes is always right and their family has to do everything they can to live by the prophecies. In reality they don't have to do anything special. If something is in a prophecy that you know is true, then no matter what you do, the prophecy will happen.
So basically what I am trying to say that those lines show greatly how Ana's preassure to always do what Agnes says is bleading onto her perspection of other peoples lives as well.

The thing with demons is that they CAN blend in better while on Earth. Crowley works/lives here full time, so he doesn't really have the opportunity to look gross and grimy. But you can see when Gabriel and Beelzebub come to the air base, Beez is much cleaner/human-presenting than they are down below. If you keep an eye out, there are a couple more examples of this in s2, with two other demons.

There’s also a long traditional belief that demons can’t perfectly look human, there’s always some animal feature they have to try and hide. Crowley’s got the eyes and, according to the book snakeskin “probably shoes”. When on earth, the show gives the less-nativized demons animals for hats instead (Hastur’s wig looks particularly awful because it’s on top of his toad-hat).
The angels have a form of this too, with Gabriel’s glowing purple eyes, Uriel’s gold skin accents, and Sandalphon’s diamond teeth being hidden on earth.

Worth to note, that even from back then, Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachett were always considered to be quite progressive.
It might be clear if you read their other works from that time, in which they sometimes imply sexualities
other then straight. That's without including The Sandman Comic in which Neil straight up unmistakably wrote
transgender (mtf) and non-heterosexual characters as far as _33 years ago._
Bear in mind, that the standards for writing women characters was almost non-existent back then. oversexualization of women, especially in mostly male dominated spaces such as fantasy and sci-fi, was more common - This is something Terry loved to critic and make fun of, the show even kept the line from the book that does it. Yeah, some of Neil's and even Terry's female characters were weaker, but they both improved over the years, as writers and as people.

@@wizardlizard4496 Terry’s biggest work (Discworld, a series with more than 40 novels and other books) also prominently features not just queer and trans characters but a literal gender revolution (as in an actual war) over the right of people to decide their own gender and presentation, and that storyline began in 1996 and continued through his penultimate novel.
He’s been seriously fucking with gender roles in literature since at least the early 80s, even before Equal Rites, when he asked the fantasy author community why the hell everybody was still gendering their magic systems and tons of authors got mad at him for it (most of them eventually doing a 180 on the topic when everyone caught up to him).

Oh, to answer your question at 2:33 (this isn't a spoiler), unlike some other biblical fanfic related media, in good omens it's implied that all the demons are fallen angels. So Beelzebub and co were also angels who followed Lucifer back in the day, Crowley isn't remotely unique in that respect. But with the animal/grossness of the demons, that just seems to be a personal choice lol. For example, when Beelzabub comes up to earth in this episode they are less gross looking and Hastur/Ligur did the same earlier on, probably to blend in better with humans. In contrast, Crowley has spent so long on earth, he has seemingly done away with looking gross.

I think if this show had nine episodes, it _might_ have developed certain relationships more. As it is, Aziraphale and Crowley are _the_ developed relationship and the others are a bit perfunctory. This is kind of like romances in movies, where they bond over some adventure and get together in the end even though it's only been a few days (or less) -- or series and movies where the supporting characters get together quickly while the leads are still slow burning away. Their getting together quickly almost places their relationship as not so important. Of course, they could have spent even a few more minutes on character development and their relationship if the show had scuttled the (comedic) sex scene. But in season two, when Anathema is on the run and suspected of Newt's murder, it really gets interesting.

The serendipity was that it was Neil Gaiman who "discovered" her years before as a fan of his comics who sent her cassette demos to him for consideration. He loved them, got her contacts to a recording company and her first albums. Of course, they're life-long friends.
Years later, she was in the next studio while they were doing this show(I guess, the music/sound design)and volunteered the finale song.😉

You gonna love the next season/series
Even though the Adam and Eve love story was a bit offsetting considering their age

In season two you need to keep a lookout for the third child that was part of the baby-swapping business. Look for a teen who is tending to some tropical fish. He will be very important later

If you want to get more of this kind of story Neil Gaiman’s works are great, I recommend the Sandman show and/or it’s comics (for more gay, yes) and an amazing story, I can’t talk about it without spoilers but can’t wait to see your reaction to Season 2

I'm just glad that they're going beyond the book with the series, since there was going to be a second book, until Terry Pratchett died. Not sure why Neil Gaiman never wrote a sequel, himself, but is making it into a TV series, instead. I'm here for it, though, since I like Neil Gaiman's books and short stories.

I think Newt and Anathama's relationship was better developed in the book. So I fully blame Amazon for not giving this show enough episodes

The only reason I don't hate Newt and Anathema is because she has followed her aunt's prophecies her whole life and never questioned them so when she realized that her aunt prophecized she would get with Newt, she was like "okay, fine, I guess I will." And Newt is just a pathetic dork who's desperate for attention and she's willing to give it to him. It just makes sense. It's a terrible relationship, but I don't hate it, story-wise.
