I have to say that I love your reviews -- very thorough. (I bought two ThiEye T5e cameras based on your views -- and I'm not disappointed!) So, I'm wondering, do you like the MGCOOL over ThiEye E7, or ThiEye T5 Edge (if you've had a chance to try it...)? -- though the IES is a nice touch, my personal needs have more to do with picture quality, ability to really control all the aspects of the video recording (I generally install hacks on my camera's SD cards) and lens distortion correction (I generally don't use the "Fisheye" view) as well as a nice, wide panorama. I'm not concerned with the photo modes at all (though time lapse is a bit important.) (I know you said you like this camera over the E7, but in terms of these questions rather than an all around favorite.) Also -- do any of these compare to the T5e in terms of video quality? Have you noticed a difference in rolling shutter correction? (In videos I've seen, I've noticed that the MGCOOL has a different set of artifacts compared to the T5 Edge, which is weird, because they both use the same processor. I also noticed that it depends on which lenses I use on the T5e whether or not the rolling shutter effect is more pronounced.) Sorry to bug you with all these questions, but I value your input!

Hi Alex, I bought the MGCool Explorer 3 and these are my thoughts that i have also mailed to MGCool. Let's see what they do with it. I thought i share it here so people have a good understanding of this cam. Do you have any suggestions or improvements? Overall it's a good cam that has a lot of potential and is usable but needs improvements. I encountered 3 or 4 bugs that, i think, are software related. • When you view photos on the device the action cam crashes/freezes and the battery needs to be taken out in order to reset the device. This bug happens almost every time while browsing photo’s. • Sometimes when i press the shutter button the camera enters the menu (settings or mode menu) instead of starting a video/photo. • When i want to exit the “mode” menu with the Arrows on the right side of the screen, the touchscreen does not react. Sometimes when i press it once the menu disappears and then reappears again (maybe this last thing is because you are in the settings menu and the screen changes to the mode menu which look almost the same). • The cam sometimes freezes when entering and exiting the menu’s. Improvements • There are only 3 video resolution/fps options. There need to be more. At least 1080p and 30 frames per second. But also 720p and 60 and 30 frames per second. • There is no car mode. Add one and people will be happy. • If you mount the cam to the windshield (glass) of the car the cam is in up side down position. Add an option the record the video in upside down position (180 degrees turned) in car mode. • Switch the blue and red button functionality. Make the red button the shutter button. Or add an option in the settings to switch the buttons so people can choose. • Add an exit touch screen button at every settings menu to exit to the main screen / video or photo shooting screen (the exit button now goes to the previous menu, this needs to stay but an exit all button would be an nice add on). • Add and option to change the field of view (170, 140, 110 degrees). • Add a long exposure mode for photo’s (30 seconds). This way you could create nice night time lapses. How can i update the firmware? There is an option to check if you have the latest firmware in the app but this is only possible when the app is connect by wifi to the cam so the Phone has no internet connection. How can it check if there is newer firmware?
been watching your reviews, and i am down to this Mgcool explore 3 and the Apeman 4k you reviewed...i am leaning towards the Mgcool...i really want it as a B camera to take extra video when filming from another angle, but want to be able to use it as a pure action cam too...so between the 2 which do you think is the best choice....and i like the shark eye lens less distortion
The Akaso v50 pro is the same. My MGCool had a bug and therefore the wifi did not work anymore and the settings were not saved/remembered so everytime i had to activate EIS. After i flashed the Akaso firmware of june to the MGcool the problems were gone. I also noticed that another bug was gone. Sometimes the touchscreen did not react good in the menu and sometimes the cam froze when viewing pictures or movies. You also get lens correction. Very nice. Unforunately the H265 compression does not work at the moment on the akaso firmware. As they update the firmware (in contrary to mgcool) i hope they will fix the H265 codec.

Great review. More than 4K, I'm interested in 1080p (at least at 60fps) and image stabilization and good image quality. Plan to use it my family holidays and while riding my mountain bike. Hey Bruno, if you don't care that much about the 4K recordings i recommend that you get something else. ThiEYE T5E, Mijia 4K, SJCAM SJ7 Star are all nice and have stabilization for 1080P
Your review actually convinced me to buy this action cam but I wonder which kind of battery does the Explorer 3 use? MGCOOL doesn't sell extra battery anywhere and the position of positive & negative connector pins are different from the usual Chinese action cam batteries.

I'd like stabilization but what I'm most curious about. Since we fish while standing in the creek, are there any of the cameras that have good or better sound while the water proof case is on? There is always a chance it is going to dunk in the water, especially if they are recording. I think the hero 5 is water proof without and external case, but $400 is too much to spend. I'd like to be under $150 if possible.

I have the exact same question like you and I think I've figured out the answer. The Explorer 3 seems to use to same battery as ACTIVEON CX battery, same voltage and capacity with the same reversed positive & negative connector pins. Hope that help you :)
Garrett: Too bad I don't have both the Explorer 3 and ACTIVEON CX battery to test the theory but the ACTIVEON CX GOLD action cam is remarkably alike the Explorer 3 so high chance MGCOOL has chosen the same bodyframe as CX GOLD therefore the battery would be the same
Redskull: There is a review of the ACTIVEON CX GOLD here on UA-cam by channel TechMagnet with a clear shot of both side of the battery. I think you could compare that with the battery of your Explorer 3 to clarify this myth.

alex great video but...the strongest feature of this camera is that supports h.264+ as they said in their site (or h.265 as it shows in the menu in your video in codecs option. even if its not true h.265 but its h.264+ this feature in generall does save storage and stream rates more or less around 20-50%.
agreed...but i had to re-encode all the video files from it so i can actually use them with Final Cut Pro X... :) it may be great for the end user...but for me...well..made more work :)
h.265 is not for the high end users.its for everybody...if i want to shoot 4k videos the file size will be very big so its best for me transfering files from sd card to my computer (or to the cloud) the size to be the minimum it can be without quality loss.. so idont understand extactly whats your point. h265 will soon replace h264 cause streaming will be faster and use of storage will be smaller. maybe for your work its more work but in general is more efficient

i think the image stabilization is better on the MGcool explorer 3, daytime video recordings a bit crispier on the Mgcool explorer, but the night time video better on the REXSO explorer K

It isn't a real 4K camera (Novatek96660) but it has a touch screen, front display, included remote, external microphone and EIS. I compared a lot of cameras in the price range but chose this one for above features. These features I found more important because stabilized Full HD is good enough for me. This Explorer 3 is quite attractive too but it's still not on AliExpress where I looked.
i have the s200 here and it's horrible...the touch screen is unusable. I got it about 3 weeks ago...i can't really make a review because it's super bad. I hope that i have a defective one and yours will be better
I have received mine yesterday and I quite like it. The screen is absolutely not insensitive. Setting it up through the touch screen went very quickly and easy.
I bought this camera in december 2017 during presale I don ´t get along with that camera Where is the zoom function ? wifi connections remain with no result night modus worse than any mobile so far only panorama view where everything bends Any advise
there is no zoom function. Electronic zoom is not great anyway because the video quality suffers quite a lot. Night time recordings are darker than normal but the wifi works great for me
I too hate the bendy image. You need a camera with FOV adjustment, such as the SJCam S5000 Elite. Later SJCams might have it too. Also constant updates which is great.

the mgcool explorer 3 records in real 4K, the other one has interpolated 4K recordings. If you have plenty of light the MGcool should do pretty decent

the Mijia 4K does better in low light, the day time quality is somewhat similar, but only the Explorer 3 has EIS for 4k recordings

I love your reviews. Because the MGCOOL Explorer 3 has 4k image stabilization, why do you rate the Mijia 4k higher than the explorer. Thanks for your top 5 list, will help me decide which camera to buy.
I rate the Mijia 4K higher because the quality of the recordings is better, sharper videos with less noise and way better in low light

I just have one question. I have been searching the internet and can't seem to find any place that cells extra batteries for this. I have even contacted MGCOOL and have not gotten any word back. any other avenue that you think would work to figure this out faster?
I have the exact same question like you and I think I've figured out the answer. The Explorer 3 seems to use to same battery as ACTIVEON CX battery, same voltage and capacity with the same reversed positive & negative connector pins. Hope that help you :)
i was looking for extra batteries as well but i couldn't find any either... maybe in a few weeks
Have you tested this theory out yet? don't want to buy a battery and not be able to use it.
Garrett: Too bad I don't have both the Explorer 3 and ACTIVEON CX battery to test the theory but the ACTIVEON CX GOLD action cam is remarkably alike the Explorer 3 so high chance MGCOOL has chosen the same bodyframe as CX GOLD therefore the battery would be the same
Redskull: There is a review of the ACTIVEON CX GOLD here on UA-cam by channel TechMagnet with a clear shot of both side of the battery. I think you could compare that with the battery of your Explorer 3 to clarify this myth.

i am not very sure what other battery would fit... couldn't find replacement ones anywhere. Try sending mgcool an email and asking them
alex great video but...the strongest feature of this camera is that supports h.264+ as they said in their site (or h.265 as it shows in the menu in your video in codecs option. even if its not true h.265 but its h.264+ this feature in generall does save storage and stream rates more or less around 20-50%.
agreed...but i had to re-encode all the video files from it so i can actually use them with Final Cut Pro X... :) it may be great for the end user...but for me...well..made more work :)
h.265 is not for the high end users.its for everybody...if i want to shoot 4k videos the file size will be very big so its best for me transfering files from sd card to my computer (or to the cloud) the size to be the minimum it can be without quality loss.. so idont understand extactly whats your point. h265 will soon replace h264 cause streaming will be faster and use of storage will be smaller. maybe for your work its more work but in general is more efficient

yi lite does better in low light, this one does better for daytime and it has image stabilization for 4K recordings

from that i would say so if you are interested in 4K. If 4k isn't a priority now i would probably wait longer

i think the image stabilization is better on the MGcool explorer 3, daytime video recordings a bit crispier on the Mgcool explorer, but the night time video better on the REXSO explorer K

I recently ordered the SOOCOO S200 which is almost the same price (I haven't received it yet).
It isn't a real 4K camera (Novatek96660) but it has a touch screen, front display, included remote, external microphone and EIS.
I compared a lot of cameras in the price range but chose this one for above features.
These features I found more important because stabilized Full HD is good enough for me.
This Explorer 3 is quite attractive too but it's still not on AliExpress where I looked.
i have the s200 here and it's horrible...the touch screen is unusable. I got it about 3 weeks ago...i can't really make a review because it's super bad. I hope that i have a defective one and yours will be better

Is it only the insensitive touch screen or are more things bad?

I have received mine yesterday and I quite like it.
The screen is absolutely not insensitive.
Setting it up through the touch screen went very quickly and easy.

there is no zoom function. Electronic zoom is not great anyway because the video quality suffers quite a lot. Night time recordings are darker than normal but the wifi works great for me

I too hate the bendy image. You need a camera with FOV adjustment, such as the SJCam S5000 Elite. Later SJCams might have it too. Also constant updates which is great.

Hey, i bought this camera, but i'm very disappointed. The quality of video is very poor, even in 4k. Is worst than my old Xiaomi Yi 1st gen. Could you show your basic settings of video options?
i use the settings that come from the factory. i didn't find the daytime video quality bad at all...night time yes, but for daytime it did great
