Mike's voice hasn't aged a day since he first sang this in 1996. Probably should acknowledge the songwriter, Fountains of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger, who also sang backing vocals on the soundtrack recordings for the film.
It doesn't get better or more authentic than this. THANK YOU, Mike Viola! This song is REAL because of you. SOMEBODY please hug this man and buy him dinner!
The art of presenting a song with a single guitar that is remembered with all the required instruments, back up vocals, and production is something I do, it takes work and preparation to fill in the gaps as much as can be done with one instrument .Mike did a remarkable job.
I loved the movie when it first came out, mainly because of this song. That thing you do is such a great song. It has the innocence of the 1960’s, the vocals would be great in any decade, and a beat that could that’s so good, you can’t help but dance when you hear it. The people that he was singing in front of must not know the movie or song. How is it possible to just sit there and not sing along or do the clapping part of the song. I don’t know any other movie that the music was so good in, because there were other really good songs in That thing you do.
I love this song. Thank you for showing this video to show who is the actual real singer. Sounds great. There's just something about this song, I can't help but get up and start dancing.
Mike Viola…You have a gorgeous, sweet, amazing voice. I just saw the movie the other day and I always wondered who the real voice was behind this fun and feel good song by Adam S. Now I know and I am a big fan. I could listen to you sing this over and over again. You and Adam were amazing together 💙💚💛🧡
This guy has the quintessential, incredibly great POP voice ... I will love this song until the Lord comes back and takes his church out of here! This is SO good. Thanks for posting!!
Also look up Candy Butchers. That was the band Mike was doing at the time of That Thing You Do. but he solo stuff is amazing.... He actually has a new album coming out in a few months.
U know he was the guy that sang the lead vocals for the song, he didn’t write it that was the bass player for fountains of wayne. Thats prob why u like that much
i hope they make a part 2 of the movie about making a reunion concert for the wonders, how they can get the gang back together and give everybody a nice ending.

And the movie came out 1996 I was born 1965 one year later I'm confused if you wrote this song supposedly and it was a one hit wonder why is he look so young right now in 2013
Everyone in this living room is spoiled. They're just hanging nonchalant as if uncle is sharing his gem collection stories. Little do they know that they're probably hearing the most profound song created for a film of all time. Whatever?

This is the kind of music that doesn't let you age.
this song is like a drug or something, when it gets close to the end you get bummed its over and want to hear it again
I wish he would come to my house just to sing this song, and I would love to meet him ❤
best beatles song they never did
Dave Clark Five.

We ABSOLUTELY know the movie. The bigger question is why most people don’t know Mike Viola.

I will have to "AMEN" all of that, Sir. Just finally learned yesterday (23Sept2018) who sang the dang thing!!
My first concert ever: Mikey Viola Alliance at the Stoughton High School in 1982. I was 11.
Thank you Mike for sharing that with us. I really love this movie and this song and your voice just totally makes it a great song. you rock !

This is so amazing. ❤
I love this because it shares your work process and the beautiful birth of this song. Thank you.
Should've give credit to Adam Schlesinger too, he actually wrote it
Could not stop watching again and again...Mike you are great...would be a dream for me playing guitar like you...

Saw Mike play with FOW. Was knocked out. He is the real thing.
Great Job Mike! Very tasteful chords, plus using the 4minor really gives it a classic 1960's feel too it!
So blessed to have found this. I've been listening for the 18th time now. Thanks!!! 💚
No this song is great

You are such a talent and you make Ryan Adams band "complete".....
Mike is Jimmy... Jimmy is Mike.
thank you thank you thank you! my happy place
His voice is amazing ... Without his voice it wouldn't have worked .... Does he have any c.ds or anything .... Love the movie .....loveeeeee his voice
I'd recommend checking out Lurch! It's Mike Viola's best album, in my opinion. Power pop perfection!
Also look up Candy Butchers. That was the band Mike was doing at the time of That Thing You Do. but he solo stuff is amazing.... He actually has a new album coming out in a few months.
Who else is watching this in 2022. Adding date just for the record 15/12/2022
Wow! I love this and also, Caribou.
Mike you’re more than welcome to crash at my house next time you have a gig in the Charlotte area. Bring your acoustic! 😎

I thought Adam Schlesinger wrote this song.
Bruce Bellamy, Adam did write the song. Mike sang it for the film.
this song is all about his amazing voice, the chords and song structure are pretty generic, or beatles like

Adam wrote the lyrics, Mike and Adam came up with the music, and Mike performed it.

Seems strange he didn't acknowledge the guy who actually wrote the song
The girl looking bored on the couch reminds me of the Charlize Theron character in the movie.
She just got engaged to her dentist!
He sounds like Peter Gabriel in his high range.
The voice! Could have used a LOT more hand claps.
Only so many people were there.
