During one scene when they are being interviewed by Clint Howard, "Jimmy" said his influences were Dion and the Belmonts, which sort of fits the right time frame of many of the Wonders songs as being sometime around the late 1950's to early 1960's.

When I lived in Orange County (California), Old Town Orange was one of my favorite places to go to relax and get grounded. Much of the the movie was filmed in Old Town Orange including Watson's Drug Store on Chapman Ave. At that time (not sure if it's still there) Watson's had a jukebox and one of their selections was .. you guessed it .. That Thing You Do.
So, I've never heard of this movie until my sister brought it up in a conversation we were having about one hit wonders. She insisted I had to watch this with her & so I did. Now, I can't get this song out of my head... lol
When I learned acoustic guitar in the 90's this one was a great one to have in the library. Cool chord progression, moderate level, which I was. Awesome tune. I did it at a coffee house one time and really enjoyed it. Something I could pull of with my skill level.
Not gonna lie, all these while I thought this was some big hit in the 60s/70s/80s or something.. to find out it's just a motion picture soundtrack!! Daayyyuuuummmmm!
If I hadn't known I would have thought the same, it has a total summer of '64 vibe. A lot of people thought "Pop! Goes My Heart" from the movie Music and Lyrics was a real 80s song too. It's great when the producers put enough attention to detail into a song that it can actually convince people it was from that era.
I kept thinking "where have I seen this guy before??" it was driving me crazy, then I realized he was the dad in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies. Wow. Lenny really grew up I guess haha
I'm here because of SpoonyOne's The Thing (2002) video game review ending theme was this one. I like the rich and layered sound of this one. The simple 1960s style with modern sound and technology works really well. It is a titular song of a 1996 movie about a 1960s band or sth - I have not seen it.
1996: Adam Schlesinger captured the 1964 British Invasion sound perfectly and Tom Hanks got the four band members to learn their instruments, as well as sing the song. Ended up being a hit on its own, 32 years after when it could have happened.
It was genius, how he tapped into about twenty years of oldies nostalgia from the saccharine fifties, through the Beatles, distilled progressions and familiar phrases, but then presented a totally fresh, novel, original song that just plain works. It would certainly have been a hit, in those days. I will be very surprised if any of the Daisy Jones &6 songs make much of an impression, next to this classic, though it began as a simulation.
This has Beatles, Bryds and a dash of 70s power pop written all over it. Such a great song.
I used to believe The Wonders were the fictionalized version of The Beatles.
At first I got Beatles vibes, still kind of do. As I got older, I did start to hear a lot of the Beach Boys sound in there too.

Around with someone new
[Outro]
And if I know you, you're doing that thing
Every day just doing that thing
I can't take you doing that thing you do
Thank you Tom Hanks for this love letter to the Beatles. Amazing film, amazing cast. Pure Genious
Still listening in Nov. 2, 2021. Watched this last night on Hulu. Still love it all these years!
um som legal obrigado mae por me mostrar as coisas do seu tempo
This song has a 60s vibe mixed with the Beatles. It's so catchy that I instantly know the song's entire lyrics after the first listen.
Allways makes me smike. One of the best bands ever to be recording
Valeu Jovem Nerd
Love that thing they did.
Essa música é um patrimônio né gente
Let’s celebrate that this soundtrack is finally on vinyl!!!
Anyone here 2024? Then you are a legend...
yep, best fake band ever!
😂 😊

Still here and not dead yet ^^
MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Queria assistir esse filme novamente , marcou muito minha adolescência
Great movie. This soundtrack has absolute bangers i love the spartacus drum solo and the other song lenny sings is great
love this move, film, song. all the feelings it evokes. the song is perfect.
Great song, a sound right out of the 60s. Likedd the movie, too.
Adoro esse filme e essa musica! Demais 👏👏👏
Today i got to watch this movie again after years and i still love it.💜 I had to come and listen to this piece of artwork
I loved it when NSYNC performed this song during one their concerts
Steve Zahn had the best faces ever while performing this song...❤
After seeing him in White Lotus last month I got to say that he’s aged really well over these last 25 years.
“I am Spartacus!”
1996: Adam Schlesinger captured the 1964 British Invasion sound perfectly and Tom Hanks got the four band members to learn their instruments, as well as sing the song. Ended up being a hit on its own, 32 years after when it could have happened.
That's my favorite movie I love that song that thing you do.. that's the the best band ever existed
Darn ... the song is still stuck in my head! Ahhh! I love it though.
Dick Clark and Casey Kasem agree.
Foutains of Wayne! RIP Adam Schlesinger - this is a great song in any era.
Great cast and best song! Love that whole movie 🎥 🎶👏🏻♥️
Great movie. I'm a one man band on youtube.
it has been 20 years and I still listen to this song now and then
