I've heard the audio -- the Blackhawk pilot DID acknowledge the traffic advisory from Reagan tower. He said he had the jet in sight, and would maintain visual separation (i.e. he didn't need radar advisories from the tower.) HOWEVER, the Blackhawk pilot probably mistakenly thought the controller was warning him about a different aircraft -- an inbound jet BEHIND the RJ. The pilot's attention may have been diverted by that other jet. Also, the Blackhawk was flying above its authorized altitude -- that's another contributing cause of the accident.

No, initial indications are that they did not. Both aircraft were near exactly where they were supposed to be and operating within the instructions of ATC right up until about 5 seconds before the collision. The Passenger Aircraft had landing clearance and was on a stabilized, however, extremely demanding approach which involved a sort of "side-slip" maneuver, and the Helo was on an approved and cleared flight path from the Helo base. The last instruction from ATC was for the Helo to pass close behind the landing aircraft. In the 5 seconds that follow it would seem the Helo pilot lost sight of the civilian craft or never had the correct aircraft in sight. It is to be borne in mind that light pollution in that area is immense and an aircraft abeam from another will not see the other's blazing landing lights.

Wearing NVGs greatly reduces peripheral vision while also making it even more changing to differentiate city lights from aircraft lights. Remember that when two aircraft are on a collision course they will appear stationary in the windshield, which will further challenge the pilots in differentiating between city and aircraft lights. Unless you’re a pilot you will not understand how challenging it can be to make out an aircraft with city lights as your backdrop. This accident highlights a systemic flaw in our airspace system which has been brewing for years, any aviation safety expert will tell you that a fatal mid air collision within the terminal area is inevitable and today it finally occurred. @brianperry2599 Not coming from a very quiet Kansas town. I can't imagine fowl play for a single person involved. Blancolirio yt aviation noted that this Reagan International Airport is an extremely busy airport. Prelim report I just read is the regional jet is a Bombardier CRJ700 60~70 passenger 2 engine. Delta flies many of these. Our fam was on one in 2015. It's 3 seats wide I recall. I havnt confirmed but a commentor shared only 2 survivors. A Black Hawk is very large. It looks like similar in length as this CRJ700 jet
