If remaster is defined by editing resolution (not texture q btw) and aspect ratio.. then sure. But normally remasters are also inclduing an actual graphical update, as in better textures. from the explanation, the textures themselves were not changed. And seeing what the artstyle is like, thats what makes it forgivingly accepable.
To be honest, the game looks great with the upscaled resolution and increased FOV. Some of the textures could use an update but that's about it (the cliffs in particular). Cell shaded games age wonderfully and they all look so distinctive, I wish more games would use it.
How could they possibly use cell shading when the law requires all games to be photo realistic and bland? We can't have originality in the AAA market. That's just crazy talk.
@@ManyATrueNerd assuming they were forward thinking with their engine design, anyway... it works often. but not always. world of goo had an easter egg in their config file before they released a proper HD update for anyone trying to get it into a higher native resolution. XIII is unreal 2, so there's no engine reason why basically any resolution wouldn't work. of course despite this some games can still manage to program their UI in a way that breaks compatibility. but normally it's just a matter of them not putting widescreen in the options menu.

Although it'd be nice if they *added* new stuff into remasters, but as long as they don't take things away it's fine.

I think the issue is to get a legitimate copy of these games. It‘s either paying way to much for a used copy or piracy. The rights to NOLF are sadly in a legal hell as it is not clear which company actually owns the rights to the game/trademark. Someone tried to make a remaster that runs on modern machines but neither Fox Interactive nor Monolith Productions(or more the companies that bought them) knows who owns the rights. Totally stupid situation.

I am lucky in that I still have the CDs for NOLF and NOLF2 that I bought in the store, untold years ago.... They run on my modern machine just fine. Only issue I recall was not being able to alt+tab out of fullscreen, had to exit game to do anything else on my PC. I don't think the graphics are noticeably bad either, because even when the games were new, people looked chunky and things like vehicles very rectilinear. I suppose a remaster would make it look sharp, but just because of nostalgia I wouldn't consider such a product to be... especially valuable. Reminds me of buying Rome: TW Remastered. I suspected it would be kinda a waste of money and... yeah... I don't find it to be a dramatic graphics improvement, and with the remaster I gained a grossly clunky UI. I think in general trying to remaster old games has a limited utility. On the one hand, texture packs can work miracles, on the other, does it matter when what is retextured isn't a focal point of the gaming experience?

I played XIII years ago while staying overnight with friends. Some years later i saw the remake and luckily before buying it i saw Jon playing it. After the reremake i felt bad for Jon. But this is just such a wholesome video you really feel the love he has for this game if it isn't forked over.

Genuinely amazed at how good this game looks when put into a modern aspect ratio. It honestly looks better than plenty of modern games, which makes it so much more incredible that they messed up the remaster twice.

Oh no they definitely put effort into the remake. They took the time to remove features that didn't need to be removed and also took time to make the game look worse
If I was going to make a guess, I think that the original source code was lost, so they had to build it all with less resources than needed. Look at the HD Versions of Metal Gear Solid 3 (team had the original code) and Silent Hill 2 (team did not), they are miles apart in quality. Edit: it would also explain why the plane dropping extra enemies did not (they didn't know, and their tests of the original overlooked it), and why they did the intro cutscene they way they did (they only had the final render, and had improvise a justification). I know this is the most merciful explanation, but without an explanation from a developer, it is just a guess.
Thank you for sharing this! I picked up the original after your last video and was looking for a way to get widescreen working. If you are an Nvidia user you can also use the Nvidia control panel to get higher fps (I set mine to 144 and it runs perfectly) and get better antialiasing too. I'm sure there is something similar for other graphics cards but this is just what worked for me :)
@@Darthtanos there are currently 2 remasters in the works 1 official and 1 a fan project. Also timesplitters 4 in currently in development with a team comprised mostly of original devs. There will be a lot of timesplitters news in the next couple of years.
Now that I got a better look at it, this is definitely my kind of game. Thank you Jon for showing how good the original is and that it holds up beautifully for those of us that missed it back in the day. You can be sure I'm not going to bother with the "remasters".
I've beaten this game 6 times and never realized what the blinking lights were for! The map is small enough that looking everywhere isn't a problem and is encouraged.

Some games are timeless, like XIII. Some players (yourself) just want their game back after the years have passed. And some players (yourself) figure out the best way to get their old-but-timeless game running great again even though the developer did their best to destroy it by "remastering" it. Very nice game. It would be nice to have something like an "I'm not stupid, I can find my own way" checkbox or button.)
It's good to see the outro again. This dev team was definitely a cut above the rest. I think the primary thing holding them back was the shakey-cam when explosions go off. Gotta fix that, but they got carried away with trying to change things and "improve" on what came before.
The problem with the remasters is that they try to remaster things that don't need remastering. All a remaster of this game really needs (apart from resolution, aspect ratio, and FOV) is basically just some higher resolution textures, slightly higher poly count on some of the models, soft particles, and some modern foliage rendering.

XIII actually has the game editor included, so it's literally possible to mod the thing right out of the box. They could move it to a much newer Unreal Engine build, but the art style wouldn't benefit from photorealism, and I don't know if the AI would behave differently.

Newer games in a series or older games "remastered" often have mechanics that you just don't find in the modern equivalents. Which would be understandable IF they were bad mechanics ... but often they weren't. They were good. Really good! And it just doesn't make sense. It's like, "Oh, games are so HARD. So let's dumb them down!" NO!!! Stop it! Why are old games so much better? Because they were! Kids these days. Get off my lawn! LOL

I have very few parameters in my ini file. Is this a case where I have to type them in myself. My ini looks nothing like what you've shown. The parameters are (without quotes) ["GIGXIII"] "Files=0" "Dirs=0" ["Setup"] Game_0="GOGXIII" Games="1" And that's it.
isn't it weird how a lot of old games are more stable, more portable and more scalable, just because the developers really had to do more with less. The limitations back then really were on the hardware side. Now we have great hardware and a jank incomplete game can max out the fans on my RTX3080 because no one involved in it ever had to clean their code to fit onto a single rom or CD with a single unpatchable launch window.
Not particularly. Small, focused games like this can be amazing. They're also fairly simple and, well, small. That's most of what we got in this era. Now, we still get amazing, small, focused games but they tend to be on the indie labels. If you built XIII out into a massive, open world with tons of objectives and interactions, it would likely crumble like gingerbread. That doesn't mean it's not great, just that it isn't trying to do what modern big games do.
frankly i'm really not seeing why they keep thinking they need to change the presentation of this game at all. this game has better presentation than the vast majority of modern games. way more heart and soul in it, unquestionably.
You know you fucked up as a game developer when Jon, of all people, can produce a better remaster by editing 4 values in a text file.

There's a set of 4x upscaled textures on Nexus mods. They help a lot with the sharpness of the textures.

AI upscaled texture mods are a godsend for old games. Loved playing the Thief games with the AI upscaled ESRGAN texture mods.

isn't it weird how a lot of old games are more stable, more portable and more scalable, just because the developers really had to do more with less. The limitations back then really were on the hardware side. Now we have great hardware and a jank incomplete game can max out the fans on my RTX3080 because no one involved in it ever had to clean their code to fit onto a single rom or CD with a single unpatchable launch window.
Not particularly. Small, focused games like this can be amazing. They're also fairly simple and, well, small. That's most of what we got in this era. Now, we still get amazing, small, focused games but they tend to be on the indie labels. If you built XIII out into a massive, open world with tons of objectives and interactions, it would likely crumble like gingerbread. That doesn't mean it's not great, just that it isn't trying to do what modern big games do.

frankly i'm really not seeing why they keep thinking they need to change the presentation of this game at all. this game has better presentation than the vast majority of modern games. way more heart and soul in it, unquestionably.
