I was about 14 when an optician recommended this song to me. I was collecting my new glasses and he saw that I was wearing a Black Veil Brides t shirt. He was into the same sort of music as me, just at a different time. He asked me if I knew Hawthorne Heights, I said no. So he wrote the name down for me to take home and listen to. This is how I'm here now almost 7 years later, listening to this song. I listened to this a lot when I discovered HH. Sometimes I come across this song after not hearing it for ages and it reminds me to give it a listen. Whoever that optician was, thanks for recommending this band! I appreciate it all these years later.

Agree. I grew up in the late 80s/early 90s a metalhead as well (Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, Slayer, M.O.D., Pantera, Nuclear Assault...you get the point) and there are some really great bands that came out of this "emo, post hardcore, metalcore, whatever label it's given (it's all metal to me)" genre. Hawthorne Heights, Bring Me the Horizon (before they turned pop) and especially From Autumn to Ashes. Just great music.

Same! I had met and chatted with them for a while my junior year of high school then not even a year later I saw on mtv that he had died. I was so upset, they were all so nice and he seemed such a happy guy when I met him. You just never know 😔
@@metalman3432 I didn’t I seen whoever replaced him unfortunately. They did a free concert in Jacksonville Florida at some small bar with red jumpsuit apparatus back in like 2011 maybe?
Coming back to this song, an omen to those emo kids who struggled, fought for themselves and who are no longer here, we miss you, to those who survived, we’re proud of you, to those who are still fighting, keep fighting.
Heard about this band on MySpace, but never actually looked into them until one day in middle school I bought my friend's iPod Nano off of him for $50. One of the artists he had was Hawthorne Heights and this song was the only one he had. Once I clicked on it, had it on repeat for the rest of the week. Was 14 at the time, now I'm 23. Rest in peace the emo era and rest in peace Casey Calvert!
I always put them off back in the day. Until I went on a trip with my (now ex gf) and she had them on her iPod 1st gen. Man, the early 2000's were full of teenage angst. Even turning 30 I still feel it. WTF happened, man. All us growing up emo kids are old as fuck now yet it seems we never really left it
It's time to "bring back" _some_ kind of aggressive rock music. Most of what is popular right now is _way_ out of step with what's going on in the world. Edit: I say "bring back" because it's not really gone per se. It's just not popular, but there are many bands out there doing their thing. It would just be nice if rock reached the mainstream again.
I used to have the biggest crush on this emo girl back in freshman year of highschool. This was her one of her favorite songs. I had completely forgotten about her until I heard this song again recently. She put me onto quite a bit of music. It's crazy how something like a song can bring lost memories rushing back. If you see this Kayla I hope you're doing alright. You had damn good taste in music.
YOUR NOT LYING.. lol.... I'm 32, I look far from emo, but this is brining out the old me... I'm like downloading all this emo music for my gym playlist. ahahah
I graduated in 08 and I’ve only ever heard of the band growing up. I was more of a metal fan and never gave this band a chance. Now at 34 I’m like damn this song slaps.
The hanging microphone is so iconic. I’ve been introducing my younger cousin to original iconic emo songs/artists, and the first thing she said when I showed her this music video was, “I like how the microphone is hanging”. I wish music videos were still made like this.
This song just hits a nostalgic nerve in my body. Not only about the song but about certain memories and moments in my life. The good and the bad. Definitely a certified classic
glad I'm not the only one. I feel like being in college when we were....2005 to 2009...was unlike any other time in history and nobody understands it. We were facebook generation 1, the first ones to really use the internet..we had cell phones but not smartphones so instagram and snapchat and all that wasnt a thing. I mean I had a zune....
This whole album is gold.. Me and my buddy would always cover these songs when we jammed back in the day 10 years ago haha.. They're like hella easy, but super fun at the same time.. I play drums, he played guitar
Just got the signed vinyl 2024. 31 now but I was emo already at 10... 🤣😭. I remember my first concert was HH and I got to hug Casey 🥺😘🙏. Memories I will never forget. I just had to order and plus I did download this off limewire lol
So crazy, at work today all the sudden Hawthorne Heights popped into my mind. Haven't heard this in soooo long, reminds me of freshman year in high school... #nostalgia
2007 me: So cut my wrists and black my eyes. 2019 me: go to sleep and go night night ***to my preschool children* 2007 me had no idea I'd have two beautiful boys!
I gotta say I saw them live a few years ago. and it was amazing. they didn't once play this song and we all begged for an encore. and then the MOMENT the first chord struck everyone got so amped up. I've never seen a group of emo kids so excited and full of life. Always going to be a favorite memory and one I'd love to repeat and see again.
40 years old, this was the song that made me give a new genre a chance, I've never heard anything like this again. It really hits home being from Ohio and moved To Washington State, then back home to Ohio after 16 years. . . "Because my heart is in Ohio"
"Ohio Is For Lovers" Hey there, I know it's hard to feel like I don't care at all. Where you are and how you feel. With these lights off as these wheels keep rolling on and on. (and on and on and on...) Slow things down or speed them up. Not enough or way too much. (and on and on and on...) How are you when I'm gone? [Chorus:] And I can't make it on my own. (And I can't make it on my own.) Because my heart is in Ohio. So cut my wrists and black my eyes. (Cut my wrists and black my eyes) So I can fall asleep tonight, or die. Because you kill me. You know you do, you kill me well. You like it too, and I can tell. You never stop until my final breath is gone. Spare me just three last words. "I love you" is all she heard. I'll wait for you, but I can't wait forever. [x2] [Chorus:] And I can't make it on my own. You know you do, you kill me well. You like it too, and I can tell. You never stop until my final breath is gone. (YOU...KILL...ME...WELL) So cut my wrists and black my eyes. My final breath is gone So I can fall asleep tonight [Chorus:] And I can't make it on my own. (YOU...KILL...ME...WELL) You know you do, you kill me well. You like it too, and I can tell. You never stop until my final breath is gone. [to fade]
I genuinely believe that when I got into emo, metalcore, and post hardcore music as a young kid in the early 2000's, it caused me to romanticize depression and sadness and in a way subconsciously emulated and embraced that image. Let's be honest, there are many out there who bought into this sort of glorified idea of sadness/"emo". It still holds a place in my heart but in retrospect I dont know if it really did me any favors back then. I still struggle with depression and mental illness, but with the perspective, experience, and coping mechanisms I've developed in the difficult years since,
that's why i feel like My Chemical Romance (for lack of more examples) subverted the emo label. While their lyrics were always emotionally charged; there was always a tone of "yes i'm sad, but i will go on for the good times". Whereas a lot of other bands went the route of dwelling on the sadness with no positivity attached to it. I didn't really get into any emo, post-hardcore, and all the sub-genres until recently in my early 20s (i'm 23 right now) so maybe that helped me too but my depression was at its peak from 18 to 20. During my formative years, i was most into the pop-punk, punk rock, and alternative stuff. Followed by electronic music, but MCR, SDRE, pageninetynine, etc. are all helping me get through these confusing times now
I get what you're saying but I dunno man. I remember when I was younger, growing up in a small town, not knowing how to make friends or talk to people, alone every day, hiding during recess so the teachers didn't force kids to hang with me which would make matters worse, watching everyone interact and just not knowing how they did it, feeling that thing in my chest, and then I came across this type of band, and yes, some of them are just moping and don't actually have an uplifting message behind it, but the simple fact that I was listening to someone sing about things I felt but couldn't explain, that helped, cus suddenly I wasn't the weird kid no one liked that was alone all the time, I was the weird kid no one liked that was alone all the time but I knew I wasn't the only person that felt a little off in the world.. And yes your family and teachers will tell you that everyone feels alone and finds it hard to make friends, but you see your classmates just doing it with no apparent fear and you don't really believe it.. Maybe it caused me to not even try anymore, and that definitely plays a part in the depressed, borderline, college dropout with no life that I am today, but at least it gave me hope back then
It’s 2006. This song is playing on your Myspace page while changing your top friends list and your little brother/sister is watching Suite Life Of Zack And Cody in the living room. 14 years later, in 2020 you’re probably drunk and randomly had a thought to look this song up to reminisce of the good times of your teenage years.
Nope. Seen an ad for a local venue holding a limited viewing of Hawthorne Heights and I thought, "Well I'll be damned. Cut my wrists and black my eyes here we gooooo." To the comment section. Of youtube.
I'm glad this has millions of view now. You notice alot of comments from 3 and 4 years ago. The views for this video was CRAZY low for how popular it was, it was shocking. Now it's sitting at 35M. I'm so glad HH got the credit they deserve. rip Casey 😶
Drunk, 29, listening to this on the floor of my bedroom, student loans are almost payed off and thinking of an actual degree to pursue that is more life productive, no kids, no wife, alone and some what amiss of being a teen. Still depressed and still scared, but pushing forward. I think about suicide all the time but I wake up everyday and push forward. I'm in Texas but my heart is in Ohio!!!
I love how the comment section is turning into a group therapy session of depressed adults in their late 20s to early 30s Edit: Holy shit now the comment section under this comment has turned into a group therapy session for literally everyone and I'm honestly here for it. HI GUYS! HANG IN THERE, WE'RE ALL GONNA BE FINE! :)
In hiding from the thing that’s killing us😂😂 well... soon will be time to come out of hiding, kidnap as many as we can and use our music to brainwash them to make them one of us so we can build up our army and gather our weapons of straighteners to burn enemies and eye liner to poke their eyes out
I did that one morning wakingup! It was playing in my head randomly from my girlfriend playing from a while back so i came on here typing all the words of ths song stuck in my head!! I found it thanks youtube, you know me well, you really know well, you know you do!!! Lol.. listen to parkway drive, august burns red,for today
I was in high school when: Silverstein, The Early November, Taking Back Sunday, Senses Fail, Saosin, Thursday, The Used, Underoath, Matchbook Romance, Halifax, Finch, Hidden In Plain View, From First To Last, Hawthorne Heights, Yellowcard, Atreyu, My Chemical Romance, Avenged Sevenfold were all relevant at the time with great albums released. (Taste Of Chaos!) (and yes, I was a scene kid, lol!) (The first songs I learned on guitar was Bloody Romance and Bite To Break Skin from Senses Fail). Now if you name drop some of these bands to people, they'll look at you like, "who's that, never heard of them"............sigh Give me a Like! if you listened to these same bands when you were in high school. Peace!
Man, I've been listening to almost all those bands recently. Can't believe I never discovered any of this back in high school... but maybe it's for the better xD

"Because my heart is in Ohio"
"Ohio Is For Lovers"
Hey there,
I know it's hard to feel like I don't care at all.
Where you are and how you feel.
With these lights off as these wheels
keep rolling on and on. (and on and on and on...)
Slow things down or speed them up.
Not enough or way too much. (and on and on and on...)
How are you when I'm gone?
[Chorus:]
And I can't make it on my own.
(And I can't make it on my own.)
Because my heart is in Ohio.
So cut my wrists and black my eyes.
(Cut my wrists and black my eyes)
So I can fall asleep tonight, or die.
Because you kill me.
You know you do, you kill me well.
You like it too, and I can tell.
You never stop until my final breath is gone.
Spare me just three last words.
"I love you" is all she heard.
I'll wait for you, but I can't wait forever.
[x2]
You know you do, you kill me well.
You like it too, and I can tell.
You never stop until my final breath is gone.
(YOU...KILL...ME...WELL)
So cut my wrists and black my eyes.
My final breath is gone
So I can fall asleep tonight

I still struggle with depression and mental illness, but with the perspective, experience, and coping mechanisms I've developed in the difficult years since,
True. A lot of people dont realize the spell theyre under when they form their personality and image around depressing angsty music like this.
Couldn’t agree more.
that's why i feel like My Chemical Romance (for lack of more examples) subverted the emo label.
Followed by electronic music, but MCR, SDRE, pageninetynine, etc. are all helping me get through these confusing times now
This is exactly how i felt. I would even feel odd during happy times, and miss feeling lonely and down.
