My Dads first car driven to school in 1938. Lots of stories told through the years I pictured it like this one but at the time it was only 9 years old. He and his friends paid a few bucks for it, took it home and got it running as a project. They all had fun with it , took turns driving it.
After 40 years of slumber, starting in 1 second- that's got to be some sort of record, if anyone keeps such records! It will be interesting to see what is going on inside the engine. Thanks for another fine video.
Man , that is something special and it shut the hood like to say lets get going ...........This car should be kept together ............just love this sounds pretty good .............got to get it back on the road............................thanks for showing this.
Man these Old engines never quit..... just like the fellas that used to build them ! Lord be praised that there are still men out there that know how to breathe life back into them ! Another Great job Sir !
WOW! Simply amazing Jonathan! After thirty-eight years of sitting and just a click of the key and she is running!! That IS a sign my friend..a.k.a. s "keeper" :-)Do a patina paint job, throw on a set of brakes/tires and off you go. The vehicle probably knew who was going to work on it if it DIDN'T start so it decided to make things easy for you,and itself ;-)
Awesome video. I liked how you actually did work on it before attempting to start it, there are so many videos showing people putting a battery in some old junker and having it start right up after 40 or more years when we all know that is not going to happen without a whole lot of preparatory work like you did. Great old car.
My Maternal Grandfather's Overland Whippet often came up in my mother and father's conversations when I was growing up. That car was loved! For the longest time, my car parts and pieces box had one of those lovely old screw-on hubcaps in it. The hubcap has gone AWOL, sadly. I hope the project goes well!
The way that thing started up, and the wings came down I figured the wheels would jump on the spindles, and it would take off like Herby or Christine! Great video Jonathan!
You cant beat those old Jeep motors. I had a 57 Jeep Pickup.with a Super Hurricane Six in it. And She purred like a kitty everyday. And it was a Tank...Great Videos Bud. Like watching this old stuff. Love working on it...
You going to need a bigger shed soon! Very nice collection building up. You the best guy to be the custodian of these old gems. Keep up great work mate, videos are entertaining and informative. Got the Chenard Walckler running nicely after its long long sleep. Brass or bronze carb is beautiful on it.
I've been laid up for the last few months and just wanted to let you know watching your videos has kept me from going stir crazy I really enjoy them thanks for keeping me entertained.
I love getting home from work, grabbing a beer, and have a first start video waiting for me to be watched. Jonathan as always much appreciated for saving these old beauties and showing us all how to do the same. These are real cars, and will out last and out work anything made today and the proof is in this vid. Let one of today's cars sit that long and see if they respond like this...Hood shutting and saying...I am ready to do some WORK man. :D
Right on Jonathan. That's a sign that you're supposed to work on that car. It fired off right away and it wants to be back on the road running again. That must be one strong little engine in it. Sitting for 38+years than doing that. OH YEAH it's a winner.
Just my two cents of course but, It is quite refreshing to see a young adult paying attention and learning how to use his hands and head as well.I think the luck with Noah is like when you take the young ones fishing they always seem to catch more fish. Not trying to sound like a used car salesman but, What have we got to do to get Noah into that car. LOLWhatever your plans are it is just great that it is saved.Look forward to seeing more of this one and the Elcar as well.
There's a blue 1930 Whippet for sale on Hemmings for $16,900. It's in pretty nice shape. This is a great little car, it wants to drive again. I think you'll have fun with it. Linda and I send our best.
The one on Hemmings is a gorgeous car. This one could be similiar, just older! Thanks for the tip. Chuck in Kansas Here's the link- www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/whippet/96a/1984167.html
Congratulations gentlemen, l do believe that glass you spoke of Jonathon is in fact at least 3/4 full, l still think this would be a great car for your good lady wife to take to car shows, painted to match the Elcar , what a winning combination that would be. Excellent result indeed, l as well as a great many others will be looking out with anticipation for updates on this beautiful old lady - cheers
A friend of mine has a 1930 Overland Whippet (as they were called in the UK) 4-door saloon/sedan. He says that the later engines have thrust bearings in them and are pretty much unbreakable and the earlier ones don't and can suffer end float like this. Sod's law being what it is, apparently 1929 was the change-over year so this one might or might not have thrust bearings. If it doesn't it might need some machining to take them, if it does then apparently they are easily available and not expensive in the UK, so they'll probably be dead easy in the US, being their country of origin. The nearly 90 year old engine in his car has never been apart as far as it's possible to tell and runs just fine though it isn't what you could call refined. The down-side, from his pint of view, is that his missus likes the car more than she likes him, so he never gets to drive it unless it needs tlc. Having said that, it is her family car so it is appropriate, and nice that another generation of the family that bought it new is still enjoying it, and using it all-year round just as it was designed to be...
Sweet as a nut 😊 Unbelievable that it started first time after all those years stood.......😄 New cars don’t dart after a few weeks stood lol 😆 Nice video Johnathan 👍🏻
Wanta go dancing sweetheart she said!!That is a moment in life you hardly ever see once much less twice but I have had my share of both and all I did on a old model A was to just turn the key on and I'll been swearing it is the truth but your never going to believe me cause I would and hardly believe it except it was me that it happened to... I only turned the key and I heard a pop and it was loud but it was running for a fact and it never did it again. Great video and thanks for sharing the fun!!
The pot metal in the carb gets really brittle with time. S4D parts are pretty hard to find. The last one I did ,i had to make an aluminum top on the float bowl. The carb itself was really brittle until an older guy showed me how to cook the carb in an oven, normalizing the pot metal .That car really does want to get moving again, it even closed the hood by itself to hurry you up.
As I drive on I-79 here in PA., looking at about 10,000 different type Jeeps, including hundreds of Willys :) Jeep Fest was this weekend at the Jeep birthplace, Butler, PA :)
Great old car! Amazing that she fired right up. ready to go! Love the way the hood closed, as if she was saying. "OK, let's roll, I'm ready". !!!!!!!!!
Back when I was in high school in the early '70s a farmer I knew had an old Whippet 6 that they turned into an air compressor. They cut off the chassis after the cowl and hooked up a power takeoff shaft to the transmission to power it. They had all kinds of stuff like that on the farm, model A engines they used for power units on old belt driven equipment and such. You probably could use a Zenith carburetor off a model A on the Whippet if you can't find another Tillson of that vintage. And your probably right about the babbitt thrust bearing being worn out, That was a common problem with the soft babbitt and people riding the clutch a lot.
It wanted to live! That's good old Iron for you Jonathan! Well worth the trip to pick her up. I think it would make an awesome old school Clampet Mobile. Find old cookware, gunny sacks, small wood barrels. All the types of things the Beverly Hillbillies had on their old truck, sans the rocking chair, unless you put it in the trunk. Cheers my Friend! Zip~
My first thoughts about this car were to toss a mid '80s 302 in it along with the rear end and a mustang 2 front end on it and make a rat rod out of it, however hearing it start on the first turn of the key and see the hood shut on it's own means that she wants to run once more on her own the way that she was made. I am not a purist by any way shape or form however, it needed to be saved and rebuilt, thank you for at least bringing it to our attention so that someone hopefully can help you save her
You are on the mark. I thought "ratrod" to start, but that car is crying to be put back together. That little engine still has work to do. Scarcity dicates value in these old cars, this one isn't rare. The value will be riding around in it.
We have carbs like that with idle and high speed jets, one is a Walbro and I think the other is a Zenith. One is in a Case O'matic 800 and the other in an Allis WC. I don't know what it is about the design, but after rebuilding them both they fired right up no issues and minimal adjustment needed afterwards. Rpms jump up very quickly even though they don't have an accelerator pump.
Yes sir!!! Slammed the hood doors shut!!! Noah is GREAT LUCK!!! Imagine if it had 4 good wheels? It's ready to drive! I'm guessing a bearing went dry in the Low End.
You are awesome Johnathan I am interested in the 59 four door I don't really know how that works getting ahold of you but I love "nothing is really an issue" love watching you brother
Did some checking and AC Delco part number U112 should get you new points, C345 a cap, and C429 a new rotor (1945 CJ2 with ICW series dist.). Standard Motor Products UC-14 or UC-14T is the coil listed for a 1930 Whippet and a 1929 Whippet Model 96A or 98A uses Champion 518 plugs. The old listing number for the plugs is Champion #W-18. Hope this helps....
We really enjoy your videos, you are a very smart man , & knowledgeable! We appreciate you a lot for the intelligence that you share! GODS BLESSINGS TO YOU OUR FRIEND! 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
The Whippet is saying "Fix Me Drive me". I do know Willys had insert bearings in 1933. '29 I don't know. The Willys - Knight registry has a ton of helpful information on all pre WW2 vehicles. They helped me with my '42 sedan.
It started up, shut the hood by itself, and said "Let's go! It's been a long time since I've been out for a drive" About that thrust bearing,....wasn't there a line from a song that goes "Pour me another one, just like the other one"? I'm thinkin that the smoke out the tailpipe is lessening a bit already. It was nice to see something go smoothly for you. It's like when you always find something at the last place you look for it. You've learned how to right up front do that one more thing it takes to get it runnin.
Had a pretty brutal day at work. Got home at 1am looking very much forward to some sleep. Saw a notification that Jonathan uploaded a video.. Ok ok maybe watch just one youtube video ;)
That car wants you to put it on the road again. Once you get that thrust bearing fixed it time for some tires and brake work. I really like what you can do with cars!
My dad had a 29 or 30 whippet Coupe sold it to the body man at Everest Kansas cuz it had been his dad's and he had had the wood replaced in it but I haven't seen it since then

That whippet is so grateful for the touch of a respectful mechanic it jumped for joy!

Looks like the wife got a hold of you. She cleaned you up good. Old cars are amazing, the simplicity is what makes them run so well.
My Maternal Grandfather's Overland Whippet often came up in my mother and father's conversations when I was growing up. That car was loved! For the longest time, my car parts and pieces box had one of those lovely old screw-on hubcaps in it. The hubcap has gone AWOL, sadly.

I LOVE SEEING THESE OLD CARS AND TRUCKS START UP AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS ! Very cool thanks for sharing. Hope to see it on the road someday. :)
If Noah can build a ark I'm sure he can get a whippet to run. Magic both of you. All the best from uk
Amazing. These old cars just simply refuse to give up.
I love how that old motor fired right up. Gave me a warm fuzzy feeling.
People need to just enjoy what you do, no matter what your working on, always informative and I appreciate what your doing, keep it up

Very cool! Nice to see an old piece like that fire up. Always look forward to your videos.
This was my grandfathers car back in the day I wish I had it you’re one lucky man great video
A good sounding old motor despite the issue it has. Would be really neat restored, because there aren't many left. Enjoyed this post.
Love watching father and son wrenching on old motors ❤️
What you did in this video is what I like to do loved it , every second of this video thank you so very much .

Wow!! Now that was cool. Love the old engines, especially when they start like that!!

Willy's a runner! Looks like fun.
Tillotson made carburetors for Harleys back in the day. Cool find!
Methodical and logical thinker. I like your methods sir. This never gets old.
Amazing I think this car was waiting for your touch Jonathan

Wow, I'm impressed. Kind of takes me back to my childhood days when guys knew how to fix something and did it on the spot.
Jonathan your videos are great videos keep up the good work and thank you for all the information on the car's.
She wants to live. Love this old car. Lots of character.
Great job that engine start was amazing. Keep up the good work.
wow, never seen anything start like that before! The hood shutting on it's own was a treat to see as well! Hope to see more of this Gem later.
Dang Jonathan, it starts faster than my 2006 Ford Taurus. Okay no Ford jokes! LOL
That's crazy. It runs so well you gotta do the crank. And it didn't look like much smoke at all.
My first thoughts about this car were to toss a mid '80s 302 in it along with the rear end and a mustang 2 front end on it and make a rat rod out of it, however hearing it start on the first turn of the key and see the hood shut on it's own means that she wants to run once more on her own the way that she was made. This is going to be a really interesting car to watch.
Thanks.

That car Def wants to be saved! LOVE IT!
You woke up a real Workhorse! Have you got Lead Additive for the gas? Lead ash cushions the exhaust valves. Most car stores carry it.
I love it a man after my on heart the way I was brought up and had prayed off time after time,a real feel good experience, keep it up!
Its incredible that it still has a good working engine considering about 90% of the car is missing.
Another great video! Thank you.
Wow 1st try. They don't make em like they used to. Awesome find.👌👌
nice little fixer upper. Lucky find for originality!
Had a pretty brutal day at work. Got home at 1am looking very much forward to some sleep. Saw a notification that Jonathan uploaded a video.. Ok ok maybe watch just one youtube video ;)
That's awesome! Quality built.
That car wants you to put it on the road again. Once you get that thrust bearing fixed it time for some tires and brake work. I really like what you can do with cars!
My dad had a 29 or 30 whippet Coupe sold it to the body man at Everest Kansas cuz it had been his dad's and he had had the wood replaced in it but I haven't seen it since then
Love the work bench.... Always good to work "on site" whenever possible...
Nice man, not only fires right up, but slams its hood shut and says lets go. Go Willys!
LOL, Back in the day my Dad had a Whippet . Don't remember the year but he said it never had enough sense to break. He drove the hell out of it and loved that car. I wonder what years they made the "Whippet".
1926-1931
Great work guys, enjoyed watching your video.
