  • Do you want to build a customizable, dynamic date range filter in Tableau?
    For example, imagine you want the filter to default to the last 14 days ending with today's date, but you'd like your user to be able to adjust the end date and number of days in that filter.
    That combination of functionality is not available out-of-the-box in Tableau, but with some creativity, parameters and calculations, it's possible!
    Check out this video to learn how you can create a totally customizable dynamic date range filter for your Tableau dashboards!

    Great video! How would I create a dynamic reference line where the user selects their chosen date range, and reference lines populate for the period before performance. Ex. User chooses a date range of April 11 - April 17, and the reference line is for data from April 4 - April 10? Thanks!

      Hi Dave,
      Is the reference line a daily average? Or is it just overlaying the Current range (Apr 11-17) over the Prior range (Apr 4-10)? It sounds like a combination of things you'd need to do.
      1. Create Parameters for Start and End Dates
      2. Create Calculations to backtrack 1 week from start date and end date parameters
      3. Create a calculation for "Current Values"
      4. Create a Calculation for "Prior Values"
      5. Write a FIXED statement to fix the prior values to the weekday. { FIXED DATEPART('weekday',[Date Field]): SUM([Prior Values])}
      Now you should be able to filter the worksheet on the current value range but still see the prior values on the sheet.
