Tableau Table Viz Extension Explained
🔔 Book a FREE 15-min Tableau call here: forms.gle/DfW6TJkMjsmBytig8
For years, Tableau users have needed to use complex and creative workarounds to create text tables that can use a fraction of the functionality that we enjoy in Excel.
Recently, Tableau released the Tableau Table viz extension! While it doesn't quite turn Tableau into Excel, it does give us some awesome features like: Data Bars, Conditional Formatting, individual column widths, filters for column headers, and renaming individual fields in the table. It's hugely useful!
In this video, I'll walk you through how to set up the extension, how to format it, and one or two of the limitations.

Ollie and Eric are so handsome :D thank you for your videos
thank you Eric, it is really helpful
You are welcome!
Such a good explanation...❤ Clearing doubts by giving logic at each step...
So glad to hear it. Thanks for letting us know!
thank you for posting this! please post getting an average of top 30%, mid 40% and bottom 30% .
Hi! I think you could do that by writing a calc that segments those groups, adding it to the rows shelf, and then adding an average line at the Pane level. The calculation would be something like this: IF RANK_PERCENTILE(SUM([Sales])) <= .3 THEN "Top 30%" ELSEIF RANK_PERCENTILE(SUM([Sales])) <= .7 THEN "Middle 40%" RANK_PERCENTILE(SUM([Sales])) <= 1 THEN "Bottom 30%" END Good luck!
Great genius
Thank you, we're glad to hear it sounds like this was helpful!
So many things that should be basic functions in Tableau seem to have to be completed by bodges and workarounds.
Just depends. Tableau is an amazing analysis tool, but it isn't designed to be a spreadsheet tool like Excel or Google Sheets. You can do workarounds to get it there, but that wasn't the original intent and design. You might be interested to check out the Tableau Table Viz Extension if you're trying to build spreadsheets in Tableau: onenumber.biz/blog-1/2024/12/18/tableau-table-viz-extension-explained
This was a very helpful video. Thanks for all your efforts.👍 I have a request. As per latest update the Tableau DA exam does not have any lab questions. Can you please share the possible important areas as per latest Exam format and updates?
Hey! Sorry for the late reply - and thanks for the message. I think all the information stays the same in terms of sections of information you'll need to know - it's just the format of the exam that's slightly different. I found this section pretty helpful when preparing: www.tableau.com/learn/certification/tableau-certified-data-analyst-exam-guide Hope that helps!
Thanks for making this video. It was a huge help!
You are welcome, thanks for letting us know! We always appreciate that.
Is there a way to customize that?
If you add fields to the tooltip of the Marks card, they should show up in the initial data preview. However, the experience is not fully customizable unfortunately. You could always look into allow the user to drilldown to a detailed sheet: ua-cam.com/video/lG6HgkaKwTU/v-deo.html

When I apply this and I select top 10 I don't get the same values in the first 5 as when I select top 5. Same if I select top 5, then top subject is Social Sciences with 15 but if I select top 2 then Natural/Life Sciences is the top subject with 21. Is there anyway to combat this so that the top values stay the same?
Hi, that sounds really unexpected. Are there any other filters changing or being applied? It seems like the value ranks should not switch like that unless there is something else impacting it. The other thing worth looking at is the scope/direction that is applied to the RANK Table Calculation. If you aren't super familiar with that topic, you can brush up on it in this video starting around 8:00 ua-cam.com/video/oAtBy0wWN0I/v-deo.html&ab_channel=OneNumber-TableauExperts
Thanks for the amazing video, top content quality. You totally deserve a better mic though!!!
You are welcome, we're glad to hear this helped you. We appreciate the suggestion too! 😅
MAX is not popping up
Hi! If you aren't able to right-click and drag to add the calculation, you can always change the aggregation from SUM to MAX after the fact too. Just hit the dropdown on the pill, select the Measure breakout menu and select "MAX". Good luck!
@@onenumbertableau Hi, i am having another problem with the PIE chart label overcrowding. When filter the dashboard the labels either crumbled up in the middle of the dashboard or they are overlapping over one another. How can i solve this issue? Do you have a video that addresses this issue? thank you very much and happy holidays!
@@bjoy20101 Hi! There's not perfect way to handle this but one option is to overlay a small pie chart inside of a larger one so the slices appear like they're in the middle of the larger slices. More on that here: www.biztory.com/blog/how-to-label-pie-charts-in-tableau-biztory#:~:text=You%20can%20create%20the%20appearance,pie%20charts%20and%20two%20axes.

@@bjoy20101 You're welcome!
I’m struggling to exclude Null values from color diverging, I don’t want to filter out Null vale other wise it removes whole raw. pls suggest
Can you color them the same as zeroes? In that case, maybe just the ZN function could help e.g. ZN(SUM([Sales]))
Hi, This is a great video. Thanks for taking time in showcasing this method of calculation 🙂. I have a question, if we want to apply the same as of current date how do we do it. For example if an employee is hired on 12/07/2022 (dd/mm/yyyy) and today is june 20th 2022. Then this person shouldn't be taken in to account until we have passed the hiring date 12/07/2022. Your thoughts on this is very much appreciated
You could probably just add a filter like [Unified Date] <= TODAY() and then it will filter out future data. Let me know how that works!
This was a short but excellent refresher for me. Thanks for this video!!!
So glad to hear it, you're welcome!
Thank you , but in situation if we have need 3 colors as red for negatif , white for 0 and green for positif , how could we do as best aproach ?
Hi! You could try to set a 3 step color with a diverging color palette or you could even create you own custom diverging palette you can use in the sheet. More on that here: onenumber.biz/blog-1/2019/4/17/creating-a-custom-color-palette-for-tableau
Your videos are always the best, please I have a question. It is possible to click on the button of one container, automatically hiding the other and displaying the desired one, simulating automatic switching between them. Because clicking to open and then clicking to close is harmful to the user. I tried a few things and didn't succeed. Thank you very much and congratulations on the channel!!
Hi, thank you so much! This might not be a perfect fit but I hope that it's in the right direction. With Dynamic Zone Visibility, you should be able to get containers to appear/disappear based on selections. Let me know if you have any questions! ua-cam.com/video/KE3zfKjVmFY/v-deo.html&ab_channel=OneNumber-TableauExperts
@@onenumbertableau Thanks for the answer, but working with show/hide with multiple containers doesn't seem to be easy. I can't find it anywhere, I tried a few things but to no avail.

hi, do you have a video on current week to-date vs previous year week to-date where the week begins on a Monday?
Hi! Not exactly but here is a Week to Date vs. Prior Week to Date post: onenumber.biz/blog-1/2020/9/7/week-to-date-vs-previous-week-to-date-in-tableau-wtd Write a calc like this to "Change the week start" that you can use in your week to date calcs: DATEADD('day',-1,[Date Field]) I think that should do the trick!
if the option is not shows in public view, then how can i get export data into PPT Format
Hi! I'd recommend trying to add a "Download" object to your dashboard with a download PowerPoint option preset
I had no idea about this feature. I'm glad I found your video!
Amazing, hopefully you find a lot of uses for it. Thanks for letting us know!
Thank you so much, No one on UA-cam shown this video of formatting only specific columns but you did. Thank you so much
You are welcome, so glad to hear this helped!
My guess was: East - 40, Cent - 35, Mt - 5, Pac - 20. Not a bad guess.
Dang, that's a pretty solid guess, especially for Mountain Time! I overestimated that for sure
Amazing Tutorial 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you, glad to hear it was helpful!
Wouldn’t have been productive for tableau to include donut chart as a visual instead of creating one from scratch every time?
Will it reset parameters and filters?
It will reset the filters but not the parameters. You might want to check out the Reset View button: ua-cam.com/video/V9zT2WFkahE/v-deo.html

I have a doubt after watching this video. Lets say I have 2 dashboards A and B. I used the method mentioned in the video to create a start and end date filter for both dashboards. The issue is when I changed dates in Dashboard A, it changes the date in Dashboard B as well. Is there any solution for that where if i change the dates in one dashboard it stays in that dashboard itself?
Hi, thanks so much for checking this video out. In that scenario, it's probably best to create a second set of parameters and a second filter field.
This is awesome! Is there a way to highlight the column heading as well? Thanks
Thank you! It would be a bit of a hack but you could do it with an approach like this: ua-cam.com/video/vAuJcRzv4Ow/v-deo.html&ab_channel=OneNumber-TableauExperts
How do you undo this if I want to revert it later down the line?
Hi! I suppose you would need to come back and edit the pill to change the name again. If you'll be changing it often, it might be easier to rename the field in the data pane or just create a calculation that only contains the field in question that can be easily renamed whenever you feel like it.
Within the first 2 min of this video you nailed my situation. Tableau is amazing at visualizations but in the end many of the users just want a data table...UUUUGGGGHH
So glad to hear it, hopefully this helps!!
I have a data table with the expected hours for the year by product line. Within each product line there is a list of skills that are expected to perform that work. The skills may work on multiple product lines and some skills might not be used on some product lines. So the sum of all the skills would equal the sum of all product lines if calculated separately. Is there a way to maintain the requirement for a skill within a product line apart from the skill as a whole on a monthly basis but still be able to maintain the individual aggregation capability
Hmm, it's a good question! I think maybe a FIXED function is your best bet. Something like... { FIXED [Product Line],[Skills]:SUM([Hours])} Hard to say without digging into it together but here is a primer on FIXED functions: onenumber.biz/blog-1/2024/3/13/how-fixed-tableau-level-of-detail-function-works
Brilliant, thanks a lot. Easy and to the point

This is awesome!!! Thanks for making these amazing videos and sharing Tableau tips with everyone.
For sure, thanks so much for checking our videos out!
Thanks Eric - how do you get a count of the *currently selected* rows ?
Hi Dominic! Usually the best place to see that is in the tooltip. So you select the desired data points, hover over the selection for a couple seconds, and the tooltip should show you the totals.
Can we use multi-select sets across different data sources - like we can do with parameters?
Unfortunately, I don't believe so. Parameters are data source independent but Sets are tied to the data source they are created in.
Bravo!

While you publish the workbook on the tableau server, how do you set it up so that they can view only the front page. Any help is appreciated
The easiest way is to publish it when you've selected the home page. It often defaults to displaying the page you were on when you uploaded it! That's the easiest!
hey!! how did you achieve?? could you please help me on the same
@@abhiyt9026 Hi, maybe you can try deselecting "Show tabs" when publishing? I'm not sure if all the individual dashboards can truly be hidden but that might be worth a shot.
