  • Richard Dawkins recently quit an atheist organization for being anti-science. This comes shortly after Jordan Peterson explained to him how the abandonment of certain religious ideas is undermining science. If the trajectory continues, will atheism destroy science?

Apologies if you have ever addressed this in prior videos, but in mentioning someone like Newton and others like him in that era, do you believe it may be the case that deism was something of a precursor or proto-atheism? Or are they not meaningfully related? I can’t help but wonder if deism was a baby-step toward our modern day landscape of beliefs (and lack thereof).

With the death of God comes also the death of science. To be "scientific" you first must believe that there is a truth to it, you must believe that it's inteligable, you must believe that truth is good, you must believe in such a thing as good. All those are metaphysical claims and science can't exist without them.

I must say that I partially agree with you (as an atheist).
In my opinion, religion is a very important thing in human society for many reasons that you yourself said in the previous video on the subject (at least I watched it),
But it is important to remember that there is a real problem sometimes with religion, (which you also mentioned in the context of Islam) that it is forbidden to follow it blindly and it is forbidden to say that because this is what is written, it is the truth,
During the Dark Ages, there were many scholars who were punished by the church because they did not agree with it, this is something that some people in the world fear that the world will return to that period.
It is also important to remember that many of the atheists' claims come from the same perspective as what you often say about Islam, they think that they were originally trying to do you a favor by trying to show you that (in their opinion) all the things about God are nonsense (in their opinion - I do not believe in God but I do have respect and appreciation for religion).
It also seems to me that the problem (which I also have) in the context of religion for atheists is the fear that because research contradicts faith or creates a problem of faith, it will not reach the general public and there will be those who will deny it:
A good example is what happened in the Dark Ages when there were studies that the Earth revolves around the Sun, but because it contradicted the Church, the researchers were put on trial.
Also in addition to your claim on the subject of religion and science, then as you really said, there were many Christian inventors and geniuses (some even priests) - but there were also non-Christians who also created amazing inventions (for example, the Chinese who invented gunpowder and the first guns), or the Greeks and Egyptians and other nations before the rise of Christianity.
But it is also important to remember that many of the things there did not contradict religion, and when people began to answer questions related to the claims of religion, then problems began to arise.
      For example:
What if a biology doctor decides to test the DNA of Jesus' remains, among other things, to see what part came from the father and see what was there? Such a thing would create religious problems no matter what the result was because it could be that Jesus was not the son of God because they would discover another person's DNA, or that God's DNA was there!
And also in the context of your claim that atheism cannot be used to find anything, it is important to remember that it only means that you do not believe that there is a cosmic entity that can control the universe however it wants, in fact because of this there are many problems that it manages to arrange (with the knowledge we have) much better, such as if there is a God who created the world, how could he create matter? And how could he move cities without consuming any energy (and if he does, then how?)
By removing this obstacle, it meant that you do not have to get involved with the complexity of entities with powers to change the fabric of reality that we are currently unable to explain.
We still believe that there is law and order in the universe, we We simply look for it at smaller levels of existence, and this search also stems from a desire to find order, sometimes scientists have discovered that this order is limited (quantum mechanics), and also from an inner hope that there is order because without order then the world would no longer be logical.
But I completely agree with you on the subject that science has deteriorated because the WOKE who decided that what they say is the only truth.

    • @Satarack
      @Satarack 6 днів тому +9

It's fundamentally incoherent on many levels. If Atheism is a lack of belief, how can it have the truth value of being true?
If it's a lack of belief then there simply isn't any cognitive content there, it's the absence of a particular idea, and thus Atheism is a cognitively empty word.
Things are true when they correspond to reality, and false when they do not; so a statement is true when its cognitive content corresponds to reality, and false when it doesn't. If Atheism is an absence of belief, then it lacks cognitive content and there's no thing to correspond with reality to have a truth value of true. An Atheist who claims it's merely a lack of belief can therefore never coherently say that Atheism is true.
In reality this is all a diversion so the Atheist never has to positively justify their belief, kinda like how Muslims will only debate the Trinity or the reliability of the Bible, and never the moral character of Muhammad, the historicity of Islam, or errors in the Quran.

I'm an atheist, but I enjoy your videos and generally agree with your points. I don't subscribe to the secular humanist perspective; instead, I'm a nihilist, as I see it as the only logically consistent position given my lack of belief in anything beyond the material world. I'm the "lacks a belief" type of atheist, rather than the "claims there is no God" type.
That said, I believe a Christian nation would be a good thing. From a scientific standpoint, the data actually supports this. If you look at outcomes related to happiness, prosperity, and peace, it's clear that Christianity has been a positive force. Unfortunately, many people who claim to be "pro-science" are only supportive of certain branches of sociology that align with their preselected views. These studies are rarely required to be replicated - despite sociology as a field facing a replication crisis - but we're expected to ignore that. Go figure.
I was taught long ago to find a worldview that aligns with the evidence, rather than seeking evidence to fit my worldview. As an atheist, I would support a Christian nation, and I’d be content to quietly remain an atheist. My personality prevents me from truly believing in theology or the supernatural, but I also don’t find it particularly relevant.
Also, atheists not understanding how their moral ideas are all relative and informed by society and culture is so laughable. If these people had been born back when stoning gays was a way of virtue signaling, they would have been doing it. Because secular morals are just about trends. As an atheist, I do think morality is just a social construct - but a lot of atheists acting like there is something like a secular objective morality is asinine. It's insane mental gymnastics, and it baffles me every time.

This became so clear to me from watching the series Chosen of all things. I recommend it, btw. There is this powerful scene where Jesus and his apostles help roman soldiers carry their equipment. Presuming that God does not exist without any reason to believe so is not an example of "lacking belief". To truly 'lack belief', you would need to lack both positive and negative beliefs, which is more akin to agnosticism than it is atheism. Belief in a negative is not the same thing as lacking a belief, but rather, positing that scientifically unverifiable concepts like God or aliens do not exist without any reason to think so is more of an example of an 'argument from ignorance' fallacy. Argument from ignorance fallacies are a double edged sword.

@ If you're referring to the age old argument of "which of the many gods in history are you referring to", to that I simply respond by saying that you don't know enough about world religions to say something so limited.
Polytheism is figurative, metaphorical, based on personifications of entities, archetypes, frequencies and energy rather than literal flesh and blood beings as you think polytheists believe. They are spiritual entities, but you would've already knew this before you commented if you actually knew anything about world religions beyond a surface level understanding.
The Bible gives some credit to this idea:
      Psalm 115:4-8 KJV
"Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: Eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: Noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: Feet have they, but they walk not: Neither speak they through their throat. They that make them are like unto them; So is every one that trusteth in them."
So when you refer to "which God", I don't know what you're talking about. There was only one man who claimed to be God incarnate who allowed himself to be shamed and die and rose from the dead 3 days later.

The point of an atheist take on science is to remove the fallacy argument from authority, same for royal decrees.

I have a friend who is agnostic and a Professor in Philosophy. Seeing him trying to navigate the world with the insight of philosophy, minus a belief in ultimate truth is funny and sad. Humans need belief in Something more than ourselves, otherwise we fret, we become illogical and life becomes meaningless.

The idea that a mass conversion to atheism would pave the way for free science was a hypothesis. When there was, in fact, a mass conversion to atheism, that experimentally tested that hypothesis. The results of that experiment massively disconfirmed that hypothesis. Thus, following the rules of the scientific method, that hypothesis has to be thrown out, and anyone still clinging to it is doing so in denial of science.
