After the backlash of the death of Optimus Prime in the Transformers Movie in 1986, a slight change was made to the then in production G.I. Joe Movie. Duke was indeed supposed to die, but this was hastily retconned with a single line of dialogue spoken off-screen.
For this simple restoration of the scene's original intent, I have removed that line of dialogue and replaced it with clean ambient sound from the scene.
Presented for educational and example purposes of how a single line of dialogue can completely change the overall tone of a scene. As you will see, this scene plays out very different with the absence of that line and now carries heavy emotional weight. Keep hankies on standby...
I of course own nothing in this video, I merely present it for educational and reference purposes to illustrate the power of editing to change the tone of a scene. All footage owned by Hasbro and Marvel/Sunbow Productions.
This video is intended for viewers who are 13 years of age or older.

If they had Duke die it would have made the last lines of the movie mean even more. "Thanks Big Brother."
Oof, big time
They should have.
They should have stuck to their guns and killed off Duke, just like they did to Optimus Prime.
It would show that if these heroes are killed in action, then the stakes have been raised to the point where others will have to step up.
In a lot of ways, Optimus Prime and Duke were very much alike.
Duke's death was also meant to help Falcon finally learn to grow up. The training at the Slaughterhouse was enough to start him on his way, but losing his brother was the final spark needed to show Falcon the light.
Falcon is essentially the Rodimus Prime of GI Joe.
@@MatthewTheWolf2029 Except worse. Rodimus was a hot head, but at least had good intentions. Falcon on the other hand was just a selfish slacker who cared more about scoring chicks than actually doing his job.
@@SabeNo-rh7mb Point taken.
All that's left now is to remove the line afterward with Doc saying "GREAT NEWS! Duke's come out of his coma!" despite taking a fucking king cobra to the heart.
This is literally better acting then either Live action film.
Also...Falcon might have actually killed Duke. He pulled that Snake/Spear out of him, but if I recall basic first aid recommends leaving it IN to keep the patient from losing blood.
If so that's pretty sloppy for a Green Beret.
@@williamlydon2554 yeah, the only time it’s advisable to remove an object from a puncture wound is if it affects the respiratory system, or obstructs respiration, even then it’s highly hazardous to the circulatory system, it could cause damage to veins, arteries, capillaries, muscle, fat, other functions of the body.
For better or worse?
Exactly
Not only is the acting better than any of the live action films, but so is the script! If a cartoon series can get a Gi Joe film RIGHT, why can't someone do it with live action??! 🤦🏾
I remember they even had a funeral before the final battle slated in the script. It woulda made the scene hit even harder.
The "We'll do everything we can... For Duke!" line with a dramatic pause got me misty eyed
I know, I cried a crystal or two myself
Even as a kid watching this and hearing the retconned line I remember thinking, “this whole coma thing seems a little out of place.”
Yugioh shadow realm 😂 especially the masked double duel with kaiba and yugi with the explosion for the losers lol or the arkana saw blade sending them to it.
ME (at 12 watching): Coma?! A snake to the heart and-- (remembering the uproar of Hasbro killing off Optimus Prime a year earlier) Oh, yeah...
I’m more surprised that Serpentor was alive after Falcon clearly killed him sticking his cape in the air chariot
Same, I remember thinking as a young child (somehow?) like - wow, an injury like this and you are just in a coma?
With coma line - Hawk: We'll do everything we can for Duke. (Get him into a hospital ASAP and hope he recovers).
Without coma line - Hawk: We'll do everything we can for Duke. (Make the necessary arrangements for a proper farewell and burial/cremation).
Interestingly though Duke still dies in the Japanese dub of the movie.
And in 2013 they finally have the balls to kill off Duke for real this time, and all because Channing Tannum wanted out of the franchise.
@@killer92173 I don't care about the live action movies period.
@@David315842 me neither.
Duke now shares that in common with Sven.
Well… Japanese kids were used to that. They kill off major characters in Japanese franchises all the time. That is a fact.
Wow, I could tell, even with that infamous "coma" retcon that this was intended to be a death scene. Seeing this scene with the "He's gone into a coma" muted line really made this scene more powerful and emotional. Also, a surprisingly realistic scene of what happens in war, something that the cartoon rarely did that the comics excelled at. Great work.
Dont.see how anybody can go in a coma after being struck like that
@@chrisedwards3214 I know right? Had it not been for Optimus Prime's death (at least until far later in that series) in the "Transformers" movie, this would've been a great death scene.
@@sfighter0085 and ironically this one actually makes sense, i mean Duke is a human of course he'll die of a stabbing, meanwhile Prime dealt with way worse things yet a couple of shots kills him? Weird
Plus, in the original script, the Joes were going to hold a funeral for Duke to confirm his death. But this was omitted from the final cut.
A great scene, but of all the Joes they chose to kill off, why Duke?! He's my all time favorite Joe. It was the Sunbow animated version of Duke voiced by Michael Bell that I liked the best and it was Duke who got me interested in G.I.JOE in the first place.
If they had killed him off as planned, my interest in G.I.JOE would have died with him. And while the gone into a coma and later recovered off screen may have been far fetched, I'm glad it happened so Duke could live on in other versions in the G.I.JOE franchise.
Besides, I originally heard that Lt. Falcon was supposed have been General Hawk's son before it was decided he would be Duke's younger half brother.
The reason why Duke's death was changed or a "coma" is because the creators feared how fans would take it due to the negative reaction from fans to the death of Optimus Prime in the animated Transformers movie. But ever since 1987, Duke shares this in common with Sven (Takashi Shirogane) from the original Voltron. They're both characters who originally died, and had their deaths changed for comas. And they were both voiced by Michael Bell.
Yeah, I covered the Optimus Prime thing in the video. As for the other connection...call it the Six Degrees of Michael Bell! Love how when his derpy brother showed up later they just said "Oh yeah, that's Sven. Honest. Really. Totally Sven."
Sorry about that. I had to view this video again. And you're right. And yeah; the thing about Sven is that he was two different characters; Takashi and Ryo. The guy who was seen in later episodes was Ryo. But since he was an exact clone of his dead brother, this made it easy for the writers to write him off as Sven. Though sadly, Ryo dies too.
Yep, Sven's family is just cursed it seems! I really need to rewatch GoLion, been ages.
Yes. A pretty scary curse indeed. I wonder if Sven had any family members left in the Japanese continuity. Golion is pretty dark, gruesome, and dramatic. But it just gives me a deeper sense of appreciation for Voltron. I mean that in a good way mind you.
Now flashfoward these days now Iron Man in The Avengers got killed off and no one had a problem with it
If Cobra knew that's all it took to take out Joes then they would have thrown snakes instead of shooting lasers at them.
I remember seeing this when it aired on TV in the weekday 5 part series and I knew then that "Duke is going to be OK" line at the end was a cop out.
Yep. 😅I mean the damn snake thing hit him in the HEART! 😮Coma my ass!😂
As a kid, I was like "Duke just got it in the heart! How is he in a mere coma?!"
I remember in Season 1, Duke would always get captured or be in a building that blew up. As a kid, I thought he was so brave to put himself in harms way, but now I think maybe he was a crappy leader.
It really changes the last line spoken as well. "We'll do everything we CAN for Duke (Medical Attention)" to.... We'll do everything we can..FOR DUKE (Avenge His Death) RIP
Yes! amazing how changing/omitting one little line can change the ENTIRE tone of a scene and all the dialogue that follows. The power of editing!
In the original script, he said “Prepare a funeral for a friend fallen in battle.” This would have set up the deleted scene of Duke’s funeral.
@@johncaulfield8935 Yes I know, but as that line was never recorded or present in the movie in any form this is as close as we can get it to the original intent.
Duke was supposed to die in the movie. But the plot was changed because of the huge backlash that Sunbow and Hasbro got for killing Optimus Prime in Transformers the Movie. Hundreds were saddened and left the theatres crying after that event. It was then that Hasbro realized its fatal error and they promised that Optimus would return in Season 3 of the animated series of Transformers being aired on public TV at the time. And return he did. Duke was put into a coma but then was said to recover at the end of the movie after they had defeated Cobra and destroyed Golobulus and defeated Serpentor. And this created a whole new series for the G.I. Joe franchise including two live action movies.
The irony is it was Duke's death which put the idea in Hasbro's head to kill Optimus, as G.I. Joe was in production first but slated to be released after Transformers.
It's actually somewhat odd by todays standards but back then people took things so seriously
@@CrossOfBayonne KIDS still do.
Hasbro thought kids just saw Optimus as a toy robot that could be replaced with another robot.
They were wrong.
Parents got pissed both because their kids were upset and at the time Transformers wasn't known for wanton violence so the movie's violent deaths were a shock.
I fucking knew it! When I was a kid and saw this the way hawk goes "Thanks, Duke!" and looks up at the end, I was sure he was supposed to have died
Hawk’s line was also overdubbed and replaced. Originally, it was “Prepare a funeral for a friend fallen in battle”.
I know, already covered in other comments. Got it as close as possible to the original intent with what was available.
Remember in the first two seasons of G1 Transformers, nobody ever died? Then in the ‘86 movie, they took it to a higher level by killing Transformers. Including Optimus Prime, which created a huge backlash.
I can see it was meant to be that way with G.I.Joe - the TV animated series was to have no deaths, and then the movie was meant to take it to a higher level by killing Duke.
Cómo iban a matar a Duke , se hubiera ido todo al infierno , yo no lo hubiera vuelto a ver , Duke , Flint , Hawk , Scarlett , Lady Gaye y muchos etc ... son irremplazables .
I’ve added a subtitle to Transformers 1986- Hasbro Takes No Prisoners!!
@@hectorsamko9339the message would have been beneficial though. It’s that life is only so long and no one is guaranteed a long one. So you have to live every day like it’s your last. And it helps kids with the inevitable pain of losing a loved one. Because I have lost loved ones and it hurt. This movie and the transformers movie was a little forewarning for kids to get them ready for the unfortunate reality.
@@geeebuttersnap2433 Hasbro was only interested in selling toys and saw Optimus and Duke as an interchangeable toy robot and soldier not factoring in kids' attachment to the characters.
It was an absolutely stupid decision to make the movies "darker and edgier" just to sell new toys at the time.
Critics razed these movies to the ground and the more family friendly Care Bears slaughtered them at the box office.
Long term the movie helped Transformers with lore * GI Joe not so much * but there's a reason Optimus isn't allowed to die anymore.
Even knowing they dubbed the coma line it’s so obvious that he died.
I remember a line saying "he's in a coma' how would you immediately know that? lol I am not sure if I've ever seen the film, but I want to.
Really cool. Should've kept it that way for impact. So odd to see blood in Joe animation.
I would say this scene would have given more reason for LT. Falcon to really take it out on Serpentor. I don’t think anyone would stop Falcon from using a rocket launcher (a la “Invasion USA” final scene).
That day was rough on early grade school me lost two heros that day, both Duke and Optimus Prime.
Duke's death works better for the ending with Falcon looking up at the sky.
Falcon and hot rod had survivors guilt
Oh yes, definitely!
To this day I cry whenever I hear the Death of Optimus Prime theme. But to change this scene was a mistake. Yes it would have made a lot of boys, me included, cry to see Duke go but that would not have screwed with our minds like the change did.
Yes it would have and you know it.
You only say it wouldn't because you've gained an adult's perspective and become desensitized to violence and death.
Killing an alien robot traumatized kids and nearly got Hasbro crucified by the public as a result. I can't imagine what the reaction to a human character like Duke dying would have been.
Universal had to consult a child psychiatrist before they pulled the trigger on killing Littlefoot's mom in the Land Before Time to avoid repeating Hasbro's screw up.
I saw this when they first showed it on TV and always thought the coma line didn't make any sense. I understand why they changed it, but this would've been so much more impactful.
The funny thing is that when I first saw this movie when I was 4-5 years old, I had only recently come to America and barely knew any English. So for the longest time, I really did think that Duke had died here.
"He's gone into a coma"
And just like that, the moment was ruined!
This breaks my heart terribly.
Poor Duke my goodness.
What a big sadness I feel now, I can't keep watching.
god forbid that children learn that people can actually die in war.
My VFW August Caccavone had a squad mate who died in WWII in Germany
Dukes and snake eyes death is one of the greatest mistakes hasbro made with GI Joe.
This death was noncannon this is a toy commercial. In 1988 duke returned in tigerforce.
BEST "NEW" UA-cam VIDEO IN THE UNIVERSE
In the screenplay, the death scene was to play out in silence. No music, no words probably not even sound effects. All you would have to do is mute it until right before the next scene and you'll get the intended effect minus Hawk's originally line to prepare a funeral.
Not the entire scene, only the reactions to the moment he died (I'm looking at the screenplay right now, pages 143-144). It is dead silent through most of it, other than very subtle ambient sound. But all of the dialogue was most definitely there in the screenplay, other than that one retconned line and Hawk's final line was changed.
I wore out the VHS of this when I was a small child and I thought he died up until just now lmao, I didn't watch GI Joe that much on TV because this movie was my introduction to it and it was kind of goofy compared to the movie lol.
DON'T DELETE THIS AWESOME UA-cam VIDEO ! :-D
This blew my mind when I first saw it the 80s, I was 12 at the time. I never seen a person get murdered in a daytime cartoon. That scene would make it rated R if it was in a real life movie, because they showed blood.
Hawk's line is also an overdub. The line as scripted, storyboarded (and presumably recorded) is "Prepare a funeral for a friend, fallen in battle. Yo Joe..."
Interesting, I wonder if that line was recorded. I do like Stratmaster78's comment below about Hawk's line though, that the context of it completely changes with the removal of the other overdub.
@@zaranyzerak Most likely, yes. Dialogue was recorded March 1986 (per Don Johnson's agent at the time), TFTM came out in August. If they had any inkling beforehand of the storm that movie was about to unleash, they would have toned down the gory shot of the snake striking home.
Ah okay, yes that timing would make sense then. Interesting, I wonder if that original dialogue recording exists somewhere. Would be great to see a restored alternate cut with the last act presented as originally intended.
Duke is truly an angel! I always get emotional when he saves Falcon! 😭🥰
He's his half brother actually
I remember seeing this movie when I was 7 and thinking it was awesome but this was one of the scenes that really messed me up this one and when cobra commander got turned into a snake 😢😢
Yo, Joe.....First Sergeant.
oh man...poor duke...
Yall Gi Joe fans better thank the Transformers fans, we suffered so yall didn't have too.
Optimus Prime was an Icon and beloved character in the transfomrers. Duke I think they probably would have been fine with killing him off in the movie because you really didnt see him much anymore in the later seasons of GIJoe. It was more about the new characters.
Optimus was a robot Duke was a human.
The reactions to Duke's death would have probably been worse than Optimus' for that simple reason.
optim i mean duke NOOOOOOOOOO
Yo...Joe...
Simply, Duke was apost to die, but after the negative reception of Optimus pime death it was changed in the last minute
My last words will be "Yo Joe"
I was glad they didn't kill Duke
NOW THIS IS GI JOE! it's a cartoon about soldiers, YOU GOTTA HAVE PEOPLE DIE FIGHTING FOR EACH OF THEIR CAUSE! DAMMIT FCC
It surprised me to know just how many people watched this series and never knew Duke and Scarlett were couple?? I know she's coupled with Snake Eyes in the comic. And in some iterations...the is a love triangle between the 3. But still...how did so people miss this? 😄
Probably some nostalgia from the comic got mixed in and took over from the memories of the cartoon after the early 2000s revival.
Just like people miss that duke and Scarlett were coupled in the cartoon,. Snake eyes was never in the cartoon shown to be or referenced as a ninja and in fact only touches his sword in two scenes of the entire sunbow series. it was the comic that has snake eyes as a ninja
Tomax and xamot are almost always referred to in the cartoon as xamot and tomax which honestly sounds better, yet outside of that they are referred to as tomax and xamot which sounds worse.
Quite a few things you might not have remembered from the cartoon because of the comic.
*someone off screen* "and dukes okay!"
Um, excuse me, he CLEARLY went into a coma. Look at all those coma juices.
0:25 COBRA ! YOU WILL PAY FOR THIS ! ! WE WILL AVENGE YOU, DUKE ! ! ! ! 🤬🤬🤬

I LOVE IT A LOT
If you notice, he was stabbed on his right side in the heart. It keeps switching during his dialogue with falcon. Also, if you notice general hawk's mouth does not match up to what he's saying as he puts his hand on falcon
Yep. Lots of animation errors in general back then due to the animation being done overseas, and the lines of communication not being as robust or instant as they are nowadays. We would just kind of smirk when we'd catch one and shrug it off as they were so common. A little suspension of disbelief goes a long way with those old shows.
G.i joe is no cartoon movie! It is an anime film!😃
When the line "he's gone into a coma", I said "COMA, MY ASS, HE'S DEAD!!!"
I swear Duke says "Yo Joe" as he is being struck by the snake. Maybe they just put that line over the "deathblow" for promo/recap clips when the movie was split in multiple parts for tv.

How did you get the music without the line you cut?
Fortunately there was no music in the part with the actual line, just the ambient sound. So I just found a small section of the ambient sound from elsewhere in the scene with no dialogue or music over it and patched that in, blending it with the adjacent sound so it was seamless.
Does Duke comeback in later seasons of the 80s cartoon like Prime did in Transformation G1?
Yes, he's in the entire Dic series which followed.

This was the hardest shit I had ever seen in my life when it happen.
Eh, you didn't really edit anything. Doc's "coma" line came almost right before the closing credits, sometime after this scene.
Well obviously I did a better job editing than I thought if you don't even know where the edit was. Yes, that is the second reference to Duke's "coma." The first reference, which I removed, was spoken by Scarlett just as Duke dies. Watch the original scene again and you'll see, or rather hear, the difference.
The point to the exercise was to show the actual death scene of Duke as it was originally intended and how a single line of dialogue can completely change the tone and impact of a scene.
There was going to be a funeral scene too
I can see why they wanted to change Duke's fate, after the Death of Optimus Prime. I was strong, too bad many others were not.
Are there any deleted scenes from this movie?
Not that I'm aware of. The changes made were done strictly in dialogue, no additional scenes or shots were created for those changes.

This disturbed me as a kid. Didn't mind Optimus Prime dying since that's a robot but seeing blood in a cartoon freaked me out. Good thing we didn't have the cartoons we have now back then.
Glad too because even though this cartoon and so many others of its time were what are now derided as toy commercials, they were still action adventure cartoons and most cartoons of the last few decades are crudely drawn ridiculous comedies with the execution of so many Japanese anime. Kids in the last twenty years or so don't know what it's like to have action adventure cartoons like this even if the gi Joe a real American hero series should have been quite better than it was.
Falcon looked like a forty year old man, sounded like one too. That never worked for me. But seriously, losing both Prime and Duke? That would have been too much for our generation to handle. 😂
I honestly preferred the coma version 1. Because it's preposterous to think that Serpentor could turn a snake into a spear. (Hello, ripped directly from Conan.) 2. Just my own personal belief that certain characters you don't kill. They're mythic heroes and should always be thought of as "out there somewhere". So if you want to believe that Duke lapsed into a coma from the snake spear to the heart it's easy to explain it as Serpentor had just learned the technique, didn't get it perfect, and the snake didn't get all the way through the Breast bone or stuck in the muscle tissue. It was a sereious injury, there was a lot of blood, but ultimately not fatal. I know it's preposterous, but no more unrealistic than a snake spear, and this is just my opinion.
I mean....Cobra-La was full of giant flying insect creatures and fantastically implausible Moebius-esque organic technology, but...the snake spear is what you had trouble suspending disbelief over? Okie dokie then.
@@zaranyzerak I rolled my eyes at the whole thing but I was just talking about why balled up Duke dying and threw it over my shoulder.

Sometimes censorship is justified. Let alone when people are storming out for a character death because they love the character, not that it was disrespectful, it's a sign that there is potential. If you want everyone to die in a movie lol kill 'em all tomino has you covered with the zeta gundam anime, which the movie gave a happier ending that Kamille doesn't get lobotomized (which in zz gundam ie double zeta, he recovers).

Duke is in a coma, not dead.
Did you even watch the video?
@@zaranyzerak of course I did, why do you ask?
@@UltimateDragonDetective I don't understand your comment. This video is to show what would have happened if they had gone with the original script. In the original script, Duke died. Yes, canonically he went into a coma. This video isn't disputing that, just showing how the scene might have been if it wasn't altered.
@@zaranyzerak they've already shown the death of Optimus prime, what's the point of having another hero dead. Hell I don't want Duke to die. Even though he's not part of gi Joe dic, they thought it would be better for the young viewers.
@UltimateDragonDetective The point is in war, people die. The only reason they backpedaled on it was because of the reaction to Optimus' death. The movies push the edge more with the subject matter. Plus there were already plenty of other shows that had character deaths regularly. Star Blazers and Robotech for example. It's about realistically conveying the consequences of war, yes even to children. Nobody "wants" their favorite characters to die, but if it serves the story in a meaningful way, which this ABSOLUTELY did in that it would have given Falcon greater motivation to be a better soldier, then I say go for it. Teach that lesson, kill that character, show the consequences, don't glorify war and violence.
You can have exciting, fun action interspersed with heart-wrenching, meaningful character moments. Look how often characters die in anime, and a lot of that is geared toward younger audiences. It's a story, and what "should" happen is whatever makes for a good story. No need to candy coat the real consequences of war just because it's for "kids." You can tone it down, as this movie did, and still show the end result.
I hate Falcon to this day because of this

Ay bro its too much for a kids show💀
Nah, kids are tougher than ya think and don't get enough credit. I saw way worse than this when I was a kid and turned out just fine.
I'm glad they made the change and kept Duke alive.
Me too.
As much as I loved Duke, I do not like the rettcon it takes the teeth from the scene and makes it virtually meaningless. Sure it wounded me having both Duke and Optimus Prime die on the same day but it gave me a valuable lesson that true heros are willing to risk even death to protect those they swore too. Duke stayed the course and honored his pledge till his last breath, he stood up against a genocidal tyrant and did not make it home but many others did because of his selfless valor.
