Getting air is the most commonly understood reason for turning a compost pile. But, getting all the material to the "hot zone" at least once is what kills the pathogens and neutralizes any seeds. Turning the pile is foundationally essential to the composting process, even if the pile has good air flow the whole time!
Do you harvest energy from these piles or is there any use? Seems like a long pipe running through the center of the biomass could transfer a lot of heat over time!

For backyard compost piles, should I cover it with plastic
I think card board would be better?
