My Franco-Italian friend, you are so clear, concise and efficient with your lessons but still manage to remain engaging without seeming rushed. Congrats on the Channel and the great content. 👍🏻
Pierre your teaching skills are second to none. People don't always appreciate how difficult it is to have the skill set that you obviously have and still show so much patience to demonstrate every nuance of the song. Keep them coming, especially "Dan" tunes, it doesn't get any better than this. From a guitar player who also loves to play piano.
Thanks for this Mr. Piscitelli! I remember back in high school thinking that I like this tune so much that I should figure out how to play it. I remember starting to try and then thinking "I'll come back to it later." Turns out it was MUCH later. What a great tune. All of Fagen's stuff is more complex than it initially seems, which to me is the hallmark of greatness. This is def not a tune where you can say to the band "It's a G blues, you'll hear it!" 🤣
A music book I have explains SD uses uM chords. (moo major 😊) Substitute a major 2nd in place of a conventional tonic in the chord structure for the triad. But I enjoyed your tutorial, especially the suggestion using the phase pedal after the keyboard. Thank you!
Another song I grew up with and loved. I always got excited when they played it on the radio back in the days. Now, I have it on Apple Music and I’ll play it whenever I please. Michael McDonald makes that song great, imo.
Love the Rhodes/DX setup! :) And fantastic walkthrough of some genius music. Would you consider doing a video and/or posting some info about your gear and setup? What do you like live versus studio, when do you want or need to use the same instrument for both, &c? It's great to see all the new content coming!
A bucket list song for me that I've tried transcribing a couple times without luck. Your tutorial was so concise and laid out well enough I got it in a few hours and can run the bass line with it! Split function on a PBass and this is gonna get nailed as a trio!
This is a great analysis! However, I think the chord you identified as Bm7flat13 in the verse is more accurately described as a Gadd9 (with a third in the bass the first time) a.k.a. the 'Mu chord' as Donald Fagen might call it. My understanding is Fagen really thought of this figure as a plagal cadence, i.e. IV to I cadence, and so the lowest note in the second chord of the figure is a G, played by the bass, and perhaps the rhodes as well.
@@pierrejpiscitelli back in the day there was a VHS video (gasp! I’m that old) I owned with Fagen breaking down the composition and changes. It’s on UA-cam, it’s worth the watch if you haven’t already seen it. Cheers and keep up the great work, I enjoy and appreciate your videos.

Thorough, man. Thank You
Best tutorial on this classic song I’ve seen on the web. Subbed.
Thanks!

It’s an amazing tune. Thanks for watching! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Ty so much! You have quickly become my go-to piano guy on YT. You keep picking the best songs to break down. Thanks again!
I am honored! Thanks!
Yay, a Dan tutorial! Keep up the good work

Superb demonstrating. Taken at exactly the right speed to allow comprehension. Off to check out the rest of your work.
Your hands down the best piano teacher on YT. You have made me a way better player. Thank you for your commitment to do this 🤝
Thanks so much, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos!
Well done Pierre, really enjoyed this one. Bravo

This is massive favourite of mine.😊
Me too 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Agreed. McDonald makes it epic!
Your tutorials are great. While we are on the subject of Steely Dan, any chance you could do a tutorial on Aja? Thanks.
Great Job Pierre. Thank You.

Thanks! I would love to do a video like that. Definitely coming sooner rather than later :)
Sweet!

A rock band playing some jazz chords!😂
Damn that Rhodes is bad ass bro!

donald fagen...another chord genius 😎

Yeah, I know what you’re saying. Whether I say Gmu, Gsus2/B etc… someone tends to disagree. Not sure how I settled on Bm7b13 honestly.

Hey there, I suck at math and music theory🙃can you explain which note is the b13 in the C#-7b13 chord? Would appreciate💕
It would be an "A." Regular 6th degree (or 13th) is an A#, but flatting it = A.
I've NEVER seen anyone call it Bm7b13..it's a Gsus2/B...
Yes, both are fine. I prefer Gsus2/B as well but I get yelled at no matter what I call it.
I'm definitely not yelling.
I love your videos!
Keep them coming!
It’s a great song, I just wish the album was recorded better
Huh??? Aja is widely regarded as one of the best engineered records of all time... XD
Gaucho sounds better!
