    The volume of available work on CX is low, leading to another struggle for drivers to find a second job or a return journey back home. Especially for those jobs going into unpopular areas. So if I would do that job I need to consider coming back empty or moving into busy areas from the delivery point. That means adding that dead miles on the price. At least some part of it. For example, my favorite destinations are, from London to Birmingham, to Leicester, to Coventry, Nottingham, to even Manchester, I am usually happy to quote around 80p per mile (Small Van) sometimes even lower, but if the delivery time is after midday, in another word, If I am not leaving London early morning, Then there is a high chance of not finding the right job on the way back. No one wants that it is a day killer. There are two options here: Stay local or quote higher, in case nothing comes on the way back.

      I was going to say similar. It's the only explanation I can come up with. As a driver, if you're winning jobs now for the same rates as in November, then you're making significantly less on that job (if anything). Dead miles are a killer and currently you're almost always having to assume it's a one way job. Having said that, I'm still not winning a lot of bids, that i consider totally reasonable, on the long distance jobs.
      In general, I'm getting the first job of the day, maybe even a second job, but anything after midday, I'm just not getting anything.

      The only issue with that is most shippers don’t change there charge due to time of day or if the driver will get home etc. so quoting high most of the time will be pointless because either she shipper won’t have the margins or someone will just under quote who’s willing to tramp or heading that way for home. I understand prices vary but I’ve seen over £2.50 a mile for Luton’s from decent area to decent area that’s my issue.

    • @whitevanman9569
      @whitevanman9569 Рік тому +1

      @@JamesFletcherVlogs Yeah - it's a difficult balancing act.
      On the issue of tramping - it's just warming up and so the equation for the driver changes a little there, but January/February/March, how many drivers are really out tramping? I remember, Saintsman I think it was, mentioned his "winter strategy" - avoids long jobs, avoids tramping/hotels and stays local. If there are many drivers who do the same, it amounts to a significant change in driver behaviour (as a single entity).
      Change of topic, a video request if it works for you - as a driver it would be really interesting to see what shippers see when they recieve bids. What information is most prominent by default? Someone showed me a partial screenshot recently and it was really interesting.

    People are entitled to charge what they want if you don't want to pay it choose another. Why should drivers constantly run for companies for peanuts to line their pockets? Don't see an issue here other than People bidding what they think their times worth and good luck to them.

    • @JamesFletcherVlogs
      @JamesFletcherVlogs  Рік тому +2

      I’ve been in this industry for about 14 years now and there has always been rough rates that everyone uses £2.67 a mile for a Luton is miles away from normal. Not everyone pays peanuts and if anything when it’s like this the drivers are dictating the low prices that shoppers pay.

      @@JamesFletcherVlogs I did the job for almost 10 years mate times irrelevant really anyone can do the job with about 2 months experience rather easily. All I'm saying is the pricing is whatever they want it to be and the shipper either accepts or doesn't, there isn't any 'set' pay. I bid my rate on some jobs and more on others than I didn't really want to do for knowing if I won it at least it was worth my while. Some I won some I didn't but that's the point of the cx it's your own company so do with it as you wish. I sold jobs on there and received some high bids some low, I didn't think why they charged X amount I just accepted that's the rate they wanted and I accepted or didn't.

    The old per mile scenario- don’t work in the real world matey. Shippers expect us to drive in the middle of nowhere and think they are doing is a favour by paying a pound a mile 😂 - every job has to be priced on its own merit- distance, where we end up, time of day, load etc etc - yes you’ll get a cheaper rate if the driver is heading home and that’s fine
    Has I’ve said before Dead miles kills drivers profit

    I think the reason people are.bidding so high is the lack of work on the exchange at the mo so what they are doing is bidding on every job high does not matter where the job goes in the country making sure they have enough money on the job to drive home empty. Just my opinion , all the best buddy

    • @JamesFletcherVlogs
      @JamesFletcherVlogs  Рік тому +1

      No you’re probably right but shippers don’t charge like that so they’ll always choose the lower price over the expensive ones

    • @johnramsay7408
      @johnramsay7408 Рік тому +2

      This is correct, drivers used to bid low on a morning to get them started but lack of jobs means they’re travelling back empty more often than not these days so maybe bidding high for 10 jobs in the hope they win 1 of them rather than bid low, get the job and end up working the day barely covering costs. CX need to be proactive and get more shippers on the platform instead of saturating it with drivers and selling them a false dream

    Well mate you are making me confused as well. Because the whole of last week I could not get more than 70p per mile in a midi van. Up and down the country I went. Dorset to Newcastle. Nothing. I saw a job go from Sheffield to Birmingham which I had quoted for @70p a mile because it was taking me home, to go for 40p a mile😮. £40 and it was one pallet.

    • @JamesFletcherVlogs

      Can’t help you there mate sorry, I’m still selling small van stuff for between 0.85-£1 a mile.

  • @mpccouriers-samedaycourier3825

    I agree some quotes are very high and low it makes you wonder!, but I find this is the normal with cx the quotes on van and trucks they all differ so much but I'm sure the cx will pick up now, personally we look at feedback and use regulars. ADR is always an option as we pay x 3 plus the rates to a normal job which is good if a driver can do a few a week makes all the difference

  • @clivelittlewood
    @clivelittlewood Рік тому +2

    James, when you are getting these very high quotes, are you taking a note of the CX membership number? We are finding the same as you, but inevitably the high quotes are from people who are relatively new on the CX and I believe they have been led to believe that they can charge those kind of rates! They will soon learn when they don’t get any jobs. The split between £100 and £240 is ridiculous when you know the right price is around £140, but I don’t think this will carry on after they learn where the going rate actually is.

    • @JamesFletcherVlogs
      @JamesFletcherVlogs  Рік тому

      I make a note of the ridiculous ones and it’s easy enough to check against the archived jobs quotes on the CX if there is regular high bidders. But I think it just shows inexperience in the industry, as you know there’s always a rough going rate for jobs that most stick to.

    Great video 👍 I think people are struggling tbh mate hence the high quotes. Only thing I can think of. Each shipper has different payments terms which could be a factor to some owner drivers at higher prices. Its almost as if there's a collective effort to increase the standards on p/m prices.

    • @JamesFletcherVlogs
      @JamesFletcherVlogs  Рік тому +1

      Yeh many driver including myself believe there should be a fairer price for the drivers and a lower cut for shippers but theres a point where drivers are trying to charge more than shippers are getting from customers. Like 50% of my quotes atm.

    • @lowryvanservices
      @lowryvanservices Рік тому

      Yes, it's a difficult situation. That's the issue with not having direct drivers working for the shippers. I think there needs to be a transparent standard and shippers can use drivers that are not only vetted but are reputable with a score card etc.

    Hi Freddie,
    I really like your videos and appreciate any info given.
    Just joined CX 3 weeks ago but I’m struggling a little understanding how much to quote for a small van LL2 Maxi I’ve started slowly from 0.75 and got a few jobs and then I went to 0.8 - 0.85 and I’m getting a couple only per day. I know is as well the area where you deliver that has an impact.
    Can you please give me an advice on how much should I quote as a newbie on CX? It will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    PS
    I’ve meet a driver from Manchester and he said that usually he quotes £1 for an XLWB.
