I want to make a note here about Transparent Base. I live in a cold climate and paint in a barn and I have the problem where a thin layer of flake white takes a month to dry in the winter. I found that mixing my white with a tiny dab of Transparent Base solves this problem, but I need to add in another medium to extend the open time and to get the paint to act the way I like. So if I want it buttery, I'll add in Venetian medium, and if I want it ropey I'll add in Velazquez medium, and if I want it to run fluidly, I'll mix it with a spike oil/linseed combination. A little practice and I can get the proportions just right so a layer is dry by the next day. This is a game changer for me. It means I can maintain my momentum and concentration day after day on a single piece and keep my train of thought and exploration, and not have to deal with the disruption and distraction of having to swap out another painting (or two or four) while I'm waiting for a layer to dry. And I can fine tune the behavior of the paint by what medium I mix in with it. When I first got Transparent Base I didn't think of mixing it with another medium and I didn't like it because it dried so fast; with Transparent Base alone the paint dries almost as fast as acrylic. But if you use Transparent Base in conjunction with other mediums, it gives you terrific control over open time. Transparent Base is now foundational to how I paint.
We wish we could make a genuine copal medium, but the copals available in commerce today are not the same as those in past centuries. They are not hard and do not make quality mediums.
HI Cant wait try these. Waiting for Impasto Medium 237,ml to come back in stock. Any idea when that might happen? Also how long half to an inch thick application of Impasto Medium mixed with paint will take to dry, more or less. Thanks
You MIGHT want to try their Ceracolor mediums which are wax. Tatiana and George can help you more than me. I would not recommend such thick layers in any kind of drying oil based medium.
I am confused about fine detail part. Can you do fine lines with a brush if I use Velázquez or Impasto Medium? If I used long liner brush or script brush can I do fine lines?
I would love to know more facts about Copal Varnish. I have wanted to replicate the glazing methods of Maxfield Parrish. I have never been able to due to the fact that the "Copal Varnish" is not readily available from anyone. I would be very interested to know more about substitutes and alternative to Copal, or a supplier for Copal?
Maxfield Parrish primarily used dammar varnish in between paint layers. However, this results in paint films that are prone to solvents and embrittlement.
If I wanted to make a monochrome underpainting using Velazquez medium mixed with oil paint (4:1 as recommended), how long would it ordinarily take to be dry enough for a second layer? Also, could I use Velazquez medium just slightly more of it in that following layer or could I use the same 4;1 ratio but adding a drop of oil to make each layer fatter (following the fat over lean rule?
No need to add oil in the second layer to these mixtures. We recommend using Velazquez Medium sparingly since the hiding power of the oil paint is diminished due to the transparency of Velazquez Medium.

I’m so grateful. Thank you.
Great video. I purchased Velazquez medium and it is wonderful to paint with.
You are welcome, Bill. Thanks for the encouraging words.
Replying in the video about Copal - I'd love to see a copal medium or a similar one so much!

Love your videos and your products

Velazquez Medium makes paint "longer", which helps to make fine details with brush.

But each successive layer should contain slightly more Velazquez medium than the one before?
@@peateargriffin25 No, that is not necessary if you understand the fat-over-lean rule correctly. Please watch our video on fat-over-lean,
What are the drying times of these products?
That depends largely on how they are used and with what colors they are mixed.
