Most people refer to a dog’s verbal communication as barking, but what if you reframed it as vocalizing - just as humans do with whispers, laughing, yelling, sobbing, squealing? It’s all communication. In part one of this series I’m analyzing the 5 reasons dogs bark and identifying different meanings of canine communication with vocalization. Plus, learn how to decrease excessive barking while understanding the emotions behind your dog’s howling, baying, barking, or whining.

@sharimctiver8952, thank you so much for your wonderful note 💙
This is an episode that I really needed! I now hear my dogs' barking as their way of expressing emotions that we as humans can relate to! I look very much forward to your follow-up podcast. Thank you!
Great reminder to look into WHY our dogs bark and how we deal with it…looking forward to the next episode. Thank you.
Two of my dogs look forward when the mailman goes by and then the other two bark lol
I once had a dog that was so quiet, until she had anesthesia or strong pain killers - then she would become an absolute chatterbox 😂
My current pup is so much more vocal than any dog I’ve ever had before, and she makes the most creative sounds! Looking forward to the rest of this series!
"you may know s-s-somebody like that ..." LOL, I am somebody like that!!
Susan you are awesome! Best dog videos out there. Entertaining, informative, funny and most of all so useful! ❤
A great topic and congratulations. Look forward to the solution!
i am so glad to have found your channel - the way you understand and describe building relationship with dogs hits my heart in all the right places. Effective dominance without a domineering attitude... just wow. Thank you for your work; from my pack to yours. :)
Susan is always so informative. Great topics for pet owners struggling with issues or just training information
Thanks so much Jennifer! ❤️
My Aussie howls with us and he has a whole range and Wii imitate our range.
Thank u, we love this,
here is a big kiss 😚👅.
My dog and i are having a blast, can't wait to see the next podcast!!❤
❤ absolutely love you and your team. Thank you for all your podcasts. Congratulations.🎉 keep them coming.😊
Wow thank you Susan! I’ll try to be a little more understanding but when you have a coonhound baying in your ear every time they get into a vehicle it gets old. BTW she loves riding, she’s so happy she feels the need to sing about it! 😂 I don’t even need to turn over the engine before it starts 🤦🏻🤷🏻♀️ no idea how to get her to stop but we do love playing your games.
Love all your podcasts! Thank you!
You are so welcome! Thank you @filomenamulkeen107
Great podcast! Has really changed my mindset on my dog's barking x
Very helpful!! Thank you I’m watching the next episode
This is very helpful. I realised my dog chats a lot but so do I. My dog barks once to go outside. One bark to invite me to play with him. But he barks at dogs etc etc. I'm looking forward to the next youtube lesson. Thank you!
Awesome topic ! I’ve shared with my neighbors - with the “barking dogs” ! But all joking aside, I learn something every podcast … always learning! Thank you and your team for sharing all your knowledge and experience with us!
Thanks for sharing! ❤️
Congratulations on 100,000 subscribers!!! This is a great achievement!!!! Celebrate!!!!!
Thank you so much @barthjanice4716 🧡
Great input. I totally agree.
Enjoyed your intro to dog barking and explanation of the various reasons why dogs bark.
The story of the couple who kept unwittingly reinforcing their dog's barking is a good reminder to examine how our behaviors impact our dogs. I know of several instances of people's puppy training getting sabotaged because they left the pup with pet sitters😅 which is why I always plan not to go anywhere when I have a new puppy.
Looking forward to the rest of the series. Hope you'll be addressing in more detail what to do with dogs who like to obnoxiously bark continuously while playing with other dogs. My dog tends to be pushy when socializing with other dogs. Though I've tried various things to discourage it since he was an adolescent, he likes to "yell/bark" in other dog's faces to get their attention or try to get them to play.
He is a chatty breed---Samoyed---and this is the only situation I have difficulty with his vocalizations. His personality has always been such that he can become frustrated easily when very focused on something but he also can be very patient & has pretty good impulse control about other things like mealtime & squirrels.
Txs Susan
I had a Saluki and a Tibetan Terrier- they both howled.
I will be on for the 100K subscriber celebration. Your videos are so helpful. Your content is amazing and gives a 'personal' touch to helping train our dog(s). Just heard a little yip from the crate, time for potty break!

So helpful. Thank you
Congratulations on achieving 100K subscribers who have recognised your amazing talent in passing on incredibly useful dog information. I have a barking dog and I have never thought to turn it around and look at his barking from a communication and vocalising point of view. Looking forward to the next installment.
Thank you so much, @linmc4334 🧡
Congratulations on 100,000 subscribers, Susan and team! 👏👏👏 This was so good! You are so inspiring and always help me to see things from a different perspective. Thank you! I cannot wait for the live. 🫶🫶🫶
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Congrats on reaching well deserved 100K subs.
Thank you so much 😀
Congrats!!🎉 I have a pack barker when my older dog barks (at a door knock or hears neighbor dog or sees squirrel in back yard) and puppy barks for attention and 3rdly occasionally when playing with his big bro. Positive interceptor works but I would like to get in front of it. For now, I have yet to acknowledge attention barks. I'm hoping he thinks I can't even hear him . Lol
Congrats on 100,000 subscribers!!!! Great podcast on why dogs bark…looking forward to the series….need help with my very vocal 5 month old standard poodle puppy😁 I bet I’ll learn how I’m inadvertently reinforcing the bark and how to change that! Thanks so much for your insight, instruction and wealth of dog knowledge!!!!! And the fun way you present it to all of us!!!!
Thank you @KathyWelborn-Craig-rq7jx 🧡
What a great podcast. While my dog is not a problematic barker, I learned allot about why dogs bark and could relate these to incidents when my girl will vocalize. Cannot wait for part two! As usual, Susan, you explain things so well and your sense of humor makes my day. I am so grateful for these podcasts and your lessons. Poppy and I say thank you. ❤️
@merniejb, thank you for your lovely support! 🧡
Love all the content. First year (brand new) Recallers subscriber.
🎉 Congratulations for your 100K subscribers 🥳
Your podcasts always arrived at the time when I needed.
Thank you so much!
❤️❤️❤️
Love this message on barking. I love how you compared our vocalization to their barking.
We have a mixed breed dog, about 28% beagle(per DNA results). She likes to whine a lot to communicate. Looking forward to this.
She bays VERY seldomly and rarely ever barks. Such a strange dog. But we love her lol
Hi there. We would like to find out what our doodle pups dad might be. He’s a rescue and his mum is a toy poodle. Could you please tell me the service you used. Thank you.
@jayneteal-jeffery6283 we went with Embark. There are a couple options though. Wisdom is another service I've seen used in the US. Tests are around $100 but retailers often have them on sale. Takes about 6 weeks from our experience.
Always always awesome information. Don't know how I would have coped with my single puppy (as opposed to puppies coming into a 1 or 2 older dog home) without Susan's amazing programs. And this series on barking has come at exactly the right moment for us. Thank you soooooo much.
Thank you Susan and congratulations! We love you and all the great advice you give us! ❤
You are so welcome! Thank you for being here @jayneteal-jeffery6283 🧡
Love your training methods and the great examples and analogies!
Thank you for all your helpful podcasts and videos!
Love these podcasts, please keep doing them
I have a new puppy and she has a lot to say about everything. Thank you for shedding some light on the situation
Thank you for that podcast series!! I'm very excited about it wooff!
All your podcasts are great!!! Our dogs are Decker Terriers. One is very quiet and the other wants to vocalize all the time. They are both good communicators. Yawns, with squeaks, low talking growled, wines. They crack us up with all there talk. We listen and respond
Very helpful. Write in a journal....interesting. THANKS
I was particularly interested in the barrier frustration. We have a baby gate between the kitchen and dining room for everyone's safety and that causes some BIG FEELINGS. I try not to acknowledge the barking and only reward calm behaviours, but today I tried something different - some quick training of behaviours he finds easy while he was in the dining room and I have to say there was an slight improvement.
Just found you!!!! 🎉 Congratulations👏 subscribed
Thank you @cydppalley2644 🧡
Great podcast as always and always educational. I always learn so much. 💖💖💖💖🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪
Cookies for you too @nancyhooper1742 for your lovely comments 💖💖💖💖🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪
Excelent, clear, thanks❤
👍🏻👏🏻😊
One of my spanners makes the worst noise ever, screaming yodel, can’t say bark, cos you can see him doing it from his throat, and not the usual mouth open and shut woof 🙈
Thanks for the info. My dogs bark at my son's or my daughter when they and he knows who they are as they pull in the driveway he knows the sounds of their vehicles. He barks at every cat every strange like if I drop something or I tap on the door accidentally I'm just not sure what to do. He's a yorkiepoo and he's very loud he weighs about 9 lb it is very frustrating when he barks like he makes me feel like I've got to get to the door really
Really hope for some answers! My 5 yr old is beginning to ignore my recall to go bark at the fences, either at people with dogs walking or other dogs barking. Getting worse, fingers crosses for help.
Hi @margielaughlin6056 we have a video to help with the fence specifically, here's where you can watch - ua-cam.com/video/62V-3JsHKvE/v-deo.html
my new pup whines in the evening to play .... he whines when he wants something he communicates with a whine for everything...HELP

LuCy FiRr talks. She wants to speak with your manager!
FIRST 🎉
The dog wants attention. The dog wants water or food or cooler or watermer environment. The neighbor's dog is a nuisance. Barking after nine pm or before 9 am. Left alone. It has got to stop.
