The only one here I don't have is the 18-35mm. I bought the 24-120mm f/4 to fulfill my medium range zoom and am happy with it although it was one of my more costly lens. I prefer my 50mm 1.8 G for low light street photography. I mostly prefer primes over telephoto to avoid barrel distortion and for getting a sharper image. I would love to have the 24-70mm 2.8 as that lens is so special, however me and my 24-120mm get along fine. I want the Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro for shooting the small stuff. I am trying not to lust for too many lens and master the ones I have, but I am not sorry for any of the lens you have recommended. One lens at a time.

I have the Nikkor 135mm 2.8. bought it from a guy that used it for shooting local bands for years. I tried it one night on a group playing a free concert in the dark and found out why he was using it for that. Great lens

Back when Herbert Keppler ran the photography world the Nikkor 105 f2.5 was the shitz. What is your opinion on that lens? Also, have you found a brand of rear lens cap that doesn't mysteriously come off in your luggage.

Thanks for your take - always interesting to get this kind of no-shit insight based on experience. I picked up a mint 135/3.5 for 39€ and have been extremely happy with ist as a 200 on my DX bodies. Although I have a bunch of AI-S primes which I will probably never sell the lenses I use most for landscapes are the 28mm/2.8 AI-S and the 70-300 VR you showcase here. I also love ultra-wides but currently have nothing between the 29mm/2.8 prime and an 11mm Irix, which is so extreme but also fun on occasions. Having bought a D750 as main camera I don't have to change lenses so often, keeping the 28 on the 750 and the 70-300 on the D7000. Now and again I swap the 28 for the 50/1.8 but I almost never use my 35/2 or 24/2.8 or my 55/2.8 micro, even though they are great lenses just carrying all that glass about is too much. I'm tossing up getting a 28-105 AF-D or the 18-35mm, maybe both, it's nearly Christmas. The longer zoom would make a good every day lens now that my 28-200 has busted.

Thanks Man! Your video is hands down the best and enlightening video on owning essential lenses when you are on tight budget. Great Job!
If I`ve to list down my to buy list, over time, for my D750, based on your advice (I`ve removed the 18-35mmd bcos it's expensive. May be later), list would look like this...
    1. 70-300mmG VR (For Zoom)
    2. 60mm d (Macro & Prime For Portrait)
    3. 24-85mm with Vibration reduction (For Wideangle)
    4. 10.5 dx ED (Fisheye)
    5. SP800 Flash-Speed light
    6. 50mm 1.8g (Portrait)
    7. 135mm f2.8 ((1970s model- Prime for portrait)
Here`s my query. Since we already have 60mm and 50mm which are almost close (correct me of I`m wrong), why not replace 50mm with a Tikona 100mm Macro for which you highly recommended in an another video as best value for money?
OR replace 50mm with a 35mm Prime since we already have a 60mm which is close to 50mm. Does this makes sense or Am i missing something. I generally click portraits. Please advice.

So it’s 2020, a rather lackluster period of time. On the 70-300 would you stay with the AF-S or give the nod to the newer AF-P. I’m of the opinion a DSLR was intended to make photos, not movies. Supposedly the AF-P is enhanced for movie making. Big whup. Thoughts on the AF-S vs the AF-P?

First, let me say...I love all the videos you have been putting out on Nikon gear. I have a really easy question for you though. I see how you have all the lenses in Pelican Cases and I really want to replicate that setup. I went to Amazon (and the Pelican site) and see their numbering scheme makes no real sense...like 1200, 1400, 1450, 1500, etc. Can you tell me what model pelican cases I keep seeing on display in your videos...because I want to order some.
Thanks again for the videos...I have spent a bunch of time on eBay the last several days looking for a 135mm to buy based on your recommendation!!

  • @northernrider780

I know this is going to sound dumb, but I'm currently in a qaundary about buying a Nikon D600 and entering the full frame world.
I have a question though, how do you identify an FX lens from a DX lens?
I know DX has it written in the name, but I don't want to assume that's the way you tell the difference before making my decision, the FX ones I know about seem to have ED in the name, is it really as simple to identify them as that?
Wondered if you could enlighten me Ken, or anyone else who sees this comment and knows.
I moved from a D3300 to a D7200 but would love to shoot more street and especially in the evenings etc... So getting the actual focal length from lenses would be great for that (as I'd like a 35mm prime for street) and obviously the low light performance for evenings and night shooting.

Is there ONE versatile wide-angle FX lens that can be used for landscape AND street photography? I do more street but like to do landscape occasionally too.
I moved from DX to FX and have to replace my DX 10-20mm and 35mm. Can I replace them with 1 very good lens? Or as I'm leaning towards right now, the only option is to replace them with a 20mm and a 50mm prime? Would you say the 18-35mm is better than a combo of 20 and 50?

Yup, I bought the Tokina back in 2008 for 357 euros without knowing how good it is and I used it only a couple of times on film. After the "film's end" big depression (DX sucks!) I am back shooting with a Nikon D610. My new 18-35 G has taken place of the old 18-35 D and now I have a one week old 50mm G: I think the aspherical element gives some advantages on this lens when used wide open but I didn't have the chance to make a test.

Theoria Apophasis I agree the f4 sucks in comparison to the 18-35 f3.5-4.5g. Don't waste your money saul.

Love the videos as always. I want to be a proffesional portrait and real estate photographer. Also shoot some street photography. I own a Nikon 7100 with a NIKON 50 1.8, TAMRON 28-75, and NIKON 12-24. I was thinking of moving to full frame. (Either 610 or 750?? Not sure which one but thats in my budget). And for lenses, I would sell my 12-24 (since its dx). Would you recommend I keep the 28-75? I was thinking about getting the 80-200 for when I move to full frame also. Thanks.

Hi Ken. The 50mm 1.8 has plastic ring you said to keep away from it and buy metal ring :\ there's only £10 deference between the two lens in UK

I've been shooting the 10.5mm DX lens on my APS sensor Nikon and loving it. I recently upgraded to a D750 FX sensor and started using the 10.5mm on it. Ken Rockwell on his site says don't do it. But I think he is not right on that. It is working great. Sure the view finder looks a little funny. But the DX/FX works great on the 750. I even just use Nikon's software to do the fisheye conversions and am also getting great results. It is a cool lens that I love to shoot outdoors and scenery to really capture the grandeur of the outside. Indoors it can be a magic maker when in cramped places.

SFM Ken Rockwell is SMOKING CRACK when he said that!!!!
      HELL YES IT WORKS great!

    • @SM-Flyers
      @SM-Flyers 9 років тому

www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/105fe.htmis the link. To be fair, once I went back and read it I think he means don't use it on film camera. But the placement of the FX viewfinder photo may have made me think he meant it for FX camera as well. I say that because he concludes that section with the statement "On film and FX cameras, use the 16mm AF Fisheye."

      @Person-lp1yu 9 років тому

I found one for 600$ Canadian but it has quite a bit of wear around the barrel but the glass is absolutely perfect. I tried it out on my d800 and liked the results but I am concerned about the reliability since it has a small dent on the focus indicator window and the hood mounting points are bare metal

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 років тому

lots of barrel wear is normal for a pro lens like that
just make sure it focuses right, and check what i mention in my video on HOW TO CHECK USED LENS
      thats cheap!!
      focus indicator window no biggie
TAKE SHOTS, make sure its sharp
good wear is OK, damage is another.

There is this illusion in social media that we must overstate all ideas in exaggerated ways since nobody reads or hears it anyway. Therein lies a paradox because with all the information now at our fingertips, everyone is time-poor. So much information and so little time. Now I might be babbling… blah, blah, blah

hi, ive got a question or two for you.... first, i am totally NEW to photography and have been using a cheapo samsung digital camera and getting fairly good pis from it, but i am now retired and on the road a lot and am taking pics for the purpose of uploading to spaebook and emailing to family. going to yellowstone and want decent pics of a buffalo some 150 yards away. maybe some macro, but very little. auto focas is probably a must. so.... ive been looking at nikon mostly and am, to say the least, totally freaking confused by all the damn letters, ie. af dx fx vr ai mouse...anyway, i have come to the conclusion that the d5300 is probably the camera for me, however i have been watching your lens videos and find the ones you like are not really compatible with the auto focus feature of the d5300, so then i started looking at the d7100 / d7200 because i can use auto focus with any old lens that i trip over in a pawn shop.... so... is the price difference in the two cameras worth the availability of lens difference in the two camera's auto focus features... also, any other input you might have would be greatly appreciated since im sure i should have more questions, but being new, i would imagine that i probably dont have as many questions as answers... thanks in advance for your time.... j.r. cformony@gmail.com.

      *****
Buffalo at 150 yards, got it
Well any FX lens can be used on any DX camera, but the 3000
and 5000 series cannot AF the D series lenses, NOR can use the AI or AIS for
      metering
And hell yes, the D7100 ($700 new Ebay) is worth it, I WOULD
      NOT consider the D5500
But I don’t know your budget!!!!!!!!!
Ultimately you must understand that the MORE expensive D7100
is actually CHEAPER since it can use a TON of very cheap lenses that the D5000
      and D3000 series cannot use.
      Thanks !! ask anything

    •  9 років тому

Hi. You can use lenses that have an aperture ring (non-G lenses) with a ~20 USD Nikon to NEX adapter without any problems. The G lenses require a more complex adapter that slides the aperture pin by turning a ring on the adapter, never tried that one since I don't own any G lenses.

IF you had to choose between the “best” lenses for manual focusing for the Z6 (ie using the Rhino Arc II / Focus slider) would you opt for:
    Nikkor Z 35mm 1.8S ($850)
    AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1.4G ($1500!)
    Sigma ART 35mm 1.4DG HSM ($650)
Sigma has been recommended, as the Nikkor is overpriced... but - while fitting the Z lens directly onto the Z6 - has slight advantages... I heard you can’t EXACTLY pull focus with Z lenses based on exact position of the manual focus ring??? It’s electronic and relies on autofocus to correct.
