    nice explanation , short and to the point. And you talk slowly so an old guy like me can follow along. I used this setup for a few years until I had to send my D500 in for repairs and, of course, everything was reset. Thanks

    Thank you Brian, that was a very concise explanation. I was going crazy trying to do that. I had set it up once before but for some reason "lost"that setting. I followed your video and got it back.

    You can actually have 4 AF-ON buttons. I have set mine to use AF-ON, joystick, Pv and Fn1 buttons assigned to different AF area modes. One is single point, one is D25, one is group, one is automatic AF. So I can just pick which ever button I need depending on how the action changes

      I've done similar on my new D500. I have: Pv = Single-point AF; AF-ON = Group area AF; Sub-selector centre = Dynamic-area AF (25 points); and Fn1 = Dynamic-area AF (153 points). On my, more modern, version of the D500, there is no Dynamic-area AF (9 points) option. Instead there is an Auto-area AF option in its place. Knowing which button to press with each scenario you face comes as second nature.

    The pv and front fn button also give you af options. You can set one of those to af lock and activate the shutter button as well. That will let you leave the focus point where the af-on button left it while pressing the shutter button. You will have to develop good three finger technique to do that well.

    I use PV for single, AF on for group and multi for my choice. PV plus AF on is AFC Single. Works great
    Great tip

    I have had my D850 and love it, but trying to get sub selection button to change to say Af area 9, I have watched youtube on changing settings but mine will not change and does nothing. Read manual but still nothing happens. Back button focus Af works but sub button not working at all?

    well presented video man... I however prefer the group AF on the top button and the single point on the stearable toggle bottom button.. it definitely works better this way on my D500

      SingleTrack66 thanks. For me it depends on what I’m shooting. If I’m going to shoot birds in flight I make the main one group. If not I leave main as single

    Hello Martin.
    Thank you for you message.
    In regards to your question, I'm sorry to say that the Sub selector joystick of the D850 camera, cannot be set to alter the AF area mode that is set to.
    In setting "f1 custom control assignment" of the custom settings menu the sub selector joystick, can be set to either change the active focus point or duplicate the function of the multi selector.
    For more information on this matter please check page 141 of the D850's menu guide on this link:
    downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/359/D850.html
    The AF area mode can be changed by pressing and holding the AF-mode button, near the lens release, and rotating the Sub command dial in the front of the camera. For more information on this matter, please check page 42 and 43 of the reference manual in the link above.
    Hope that you find this information helpful.
    If you require further help, please reach out to us.
    Kind regards,
    Diogo S.

    I use Back Button AF in Continuous mode. AE-ON is set to Single Point and Pv is set to 9-point. The shutter release is set to RELEASE ONLY. OK, fine.
    Now, I want to switch to 3D or 72-Point and I do so via the AF/M button. Great.
    However, now that the shutter won’t focus, when I hit the AE-ON or Pv buttons…they default to my preprogrammed focus points. Not great.
    Thus, in your opinion, do I have to keep going into “my menu” and change the shutter setting to “Focus AND Release”? Nikon said that’s the only way around it…and that was 30 minutes later. Maybe I’m missing something.

    So the reponse I got from Nikon support don’t know jack sht

    My issue with the multi selector button is that, more often than not, it inadvertently moves the focus point instead of activating the preselected AF mode. Does anyone make the same experience?

    • @BrianKushner
      @BrianKushner  6 років тому

      Yes I do. I have a drone also that has the same type of button and it happens there as well.

    • @carlhorne3703
      @carlhorne3703 5 років тому +1

      I have the same issue, just put the focus selector on the multi selector into the lock position and it will stay centred

    • @marcherrmann9635
      @marcherrmann9635 5 років тому

      @@carlhorne3703 Ok, this works indeed, but it's not very practical to switch on the lock button for using the joystick focussing when you need the removal of the focus points few seconds later. This counter-acts the reason for using the joystick as focussing tool in my opinion.
      Nonetheless thank you for the idea.

    • @carlhorne3703
      @carlhorne3703 5 років тому

      @@marcherrmann9635 Yeah I know what you mean but I have my sub selector assigned to dynamic focus for quick moving subjects so having it locked is where I want it for that scenario, I have the PV button assigned to single point, the AF-ON for group and in those two instances I unlock the focus lock for obvious reasons.
      I am only a novice so I am still working out the best way to have the customisation set up.
      Didn't realise it was all so complicated (and expensive) :)
