- Dan Gurney and Parnelli Jones idolized him before they became legends while A.J. Foyt proclaimed him the best to ever wheel a sprint car but Troy Ruttman's early claim to fame was winning the Indianapolis 500 at age 22. RACER's Robin Miller looks back at a checkered career that ended when Ruttman was only 34.

Even though you're gone Robin, the great shows you brought us will live on for history and enjoyment.Thank you Robin for caring enough to know this is important stuff.
thank you. Your enthusiasm & passion about racing shows. Glad you shed some light on Troy Ruttman.
I love this "Tough Guy"series.I hope that consideration for doing stories on Roger McClusky,Bill Vucovich,Jr.Greg Weld,Tom Sneva, and Salt Walther.
Great Video, Was Robin racing in IMCA series sprint cars. I,m sure you must know who Jerry Richert was, he was the 1964,65,66 and 68 champion and was runner-up in 67 and 70, But that must have been after Robin Miller stopped racing. I worked with Jerry as a kid and with never forget him. I love hearing any history of the early days of sprint car racing. Thanks for the video.
As I recall he was from around Mooreland Oklahoma. I have picture of the car on flat bed truck on Main St. sitting in front of a store. I am very proud of a picture of me on truck looking it over. At the time I was 4 yrs. old I still remember that day.
Thanks for sharing that story.
really miss Robin....
I love old race cars and drivers , they were REAL men , they made racing what it is today ! Let's never forget them .
A RACERS RACER. AIN'T NOBODY BRAVER THAN THAT MAN.
This was a great video. I cam currently doing research on the Ruttman family. This info helps highlight some of the data I have collected. Joe Ruttman's wife sent me this post. Joe was pleased to see it. I may be in touch!
+allan Hall My father and Troy were best buddies, they grew up together in Ontario attended high school etc. My father has binders of newspaper clippings and photos from all of Troys racing in the 40s-50s and 60s. Plus he even has Troy's 1952 Indy 500 driving shirt in a nice glass frame.I grew up listening to Troy;s racing stories most of my childhood.
What kind of research are you doing on the Ruttman family? I might be of assistance... Dee-El

Hey Robin. I know this is before both of our times but can you do a special on the great racer pre war and the man who saved Indy. I used to read his autobiography every May. Gentleman Start Your Engines. He is a 3 time winner who brought the Human family to Indy and coined the famous phrase
Are you talking about Wilbur Shaw ?
4:15-4:20 LMMFAO!!!!
Wow. Won the Indy 500 at 22. It's a shame he didn't have more success after that. Still though, what a guy for having the balls to go to Salem, Dayton, Winchester, and Langhorne at such a young age, much less to win.
he was my great grandpa I am named after him his wife and my great grandma is sitting next to me right now
I think it was nuts to drive those cars with no roll bar and nearly no restraint system.
"High Banks of Hell"
"Death Traps"
"The Idiot Circuit"

I'll never forget the nasty crash at Trenton....I think it was in 1964? I think that was the crash that took him out out being competitive
