      This is a far more sensible approach to assessing one's lenses and photographs, as opposed to claiming that people don't have the 'right camera'.
      This is simply another click-bait attempt, along with self-advertising. If these people were any good at photography, they wouldn't be on youtube trying to convince people they need a photography course.
      "The camera is just a tool - right?", He asks. It's not the only tool connected to this video.

    I'm more of the "use whatever camera you like just show me the photos" school. The hardest thing is to take amazingly compelling photographs; the easiest thing is to buy a new camera. The former requires a rare skill and photographic vision; the latter just requires money.

      @@BrentODellWhat made you return to m4/3?

    • @BrentODell
      @BrentODell 5 місяців тому +1

      @@c0ldc0ne One was that I felt I could get more for less. Especially when you're shopping the used market, there are some killer deals on great lenses. Since wildlife is outside, having at least basic weather/dust resistance is important, and that was a challenge with the Canon RF system since only their L glass is sealed, meaning I either had to spend a ton of money or buy older, EF mount lenses and adapt them.
      I did, in fact, use an EF mount Tamron 70-200/2.8 G2 on my Canon R6 with solid results, but that brings us to the second reason: size and weight. DSLR lenses, in particular, are large and heavy, and while the RF versions are better, they still aren't small and light(at least not the L glass I wanted).
      I currently use a G9, with the 100-400/4-6.3, 25/1.4 II, and 9/1.7 and I can fit the whole kit, with the long lens mounted, in a fairly small bag(Think Tank 'Digital Holster 30 V2.0' with their 'Suff It! V3.0' attached to the side)

    • @c0ldc0ne
      @c0ldc0ne 5 місяців тому +2

      @@BrentODellThanks for elaborating. I started with a 1/2" sensor in a bridge camera, then jumped to an APS-C DSLR, upgraded to a FF DSLR and finally ended up with m4/3. Size and weight and the realisation that sufficient trumps best were my main reasons. I did eventually pair that system with an APS-C system camera and now use both systems side-by-side. Wouldn't want to trade one for the other though, nor do I feel the need to upgrade to one of the newer models.

    Not meant to sound patronising but some people need to realise that ‘photography’ is an industry and the manufacturers need to sell cameras and accessories, hence the marketing trying to convince us we have the wrong camera and wrong lenses and they can supply a new and improved version, at a price. Sure it’s great to have a good camera and lenses (I prefer to spend more on the glass) but it definitely won’t make anyone a better photographer, only vision, creativity and developing your own style can do that. Great video Craig 😄👍📸

    Many thanks for the tip on "front button focusing" for the Pen F! You made my day. First one must reassign the default DOF Preview button to be the AEL-AFL button, then go to AEL-AFL in the camera menu and select "mode 3", which causes the button you've assigned to AEL-AFL to now activate the autofocus. Brilliant work around for those of us who regret the lack of "back button focus" on this camera.

    Fantastic video.
    Spot on point about it not being the most important to have the latest model camera, so much as a camera that supports your shooting style and handling needs.
    Even a professional must enjoy the camera they use or all enjoyment of the art turns into a labor.
    As long as you can get the shots you need, it matters not how old the camera or dated the tech.
    Thank you for taking the time to share all this.

    These kind of videos don't normally get much views unfortunately as it's great topic unlike the usual titles like "I switched" which there are an abundance off. I am actually in the market for a new camera as I sold all my gear due to my own personal frustration shooting in the urban enviroment but I miss getting out and about. I have had a fair few cameras in the past from Fuji to Olympus Sony & Canon. I looking to start from basics and get something that feels good in the hands, not to many fancy features and the dials in the right place but this is where the problem starts as the choice out there is so overwhelming.

    Great advice as always Craig - a voice of reason and experience. I have been a MFT shooter for a good few years and I am not ready to jump ship. I don't think me moving to full frame or medium format will make me a better photographer. Any marginal improvement in image quality I would get from using a larger sensor system is unlikely to out way the benefits of using the smaller sensor system. If I had to change I would probably do as you have done and move to the Fuji crop sensor system, and yet I wouldn't do this lightly. First class weather sealing and image stabilisation, good ergonomics, ease of use, carrying weight and lens choices are all features I would put ahead of image quality. Let's face it, pretty much all interchangeable lens cameras today are capable of taking good images. But not every camera is great to use.

    Lugged around Canons for years. When I had to take pictures, I could get into the moment. But generally I got bored with them. For reasons of figuring whether DXO were telling the truth, I bought a Pentax K5. The odd thing was, the moment I picked it up, I felt it was tugging to make a picture. It sucked me into taking pictures. That was the suprise after all the years of getting bored with Canons, the ergonomics, even the rubber on the pentax grip, "did" something for me. It felt right in my hand. So just be aware that there is more to "wanting" to take pictures, than simply lumber yourself with a big heavy camera bag, and something you carry around every day, but can't be bothered to ge it out of the bag.

      I learned on Pentax K500s at art college. I figured they would last a lifetime. The K5 was fun, and perhaps that fed into the fact that I took some of my most favourite images with it. But it was not as rock solid as I had hoped. Within a month it needed a circuit board replaced under warrenty for a battery problem. And then 3 years old it needed the whole sensor assembly replaced for a stabilization issue. It was smearing the first picture in every set. I paid (about what would be) $400 for a new sensor. Then it started to go again. At that point the camera was 6 years old, and not worth another $400 repair. With great sadness, I lobbed it high in the air on it's way into the "e-waste" dumpster at the local tip. I still have the third hand, 40 year old, manual SMC 50mm f1.4. It usually lives on the front of my GH5S these days. I often wonder about getting another K5. There is a lot more to a "happy camera" than squabbling over full frame or not.

    As mentioned in another comment, I've used most of the major systems, and ended up coming back to a Lumix G9. As a wildlife photographer(enthusiast, I'm not getting paid to take pictures) I was putting together a gallery and photo book of my favorite bird photos, and I realized that there were great shots from every system, and the only real trend was I like more recent shots than old shots. My take away was that my skill had improved, but the camera wasn't really making a huge difference.

Found a good priced 1Mii and lens. Love it as well as the G9. Didn’t resell it. Fortunately, all M43 lenses are interchangeable though not with full functionality. They each have their strengths.

I'm kind of "lucky" that I can seldom afford the latest & greatest models and have mostly bought 2nd hand in the 25 years or so that I've been doing Photography. My recent purchase of an OM-1 is an exception, but it had features not found on the EM-1 MKII that I traded in which were worth it. Keep up the good work.

    I've wanted something compact to carry everyday, as Nikon D3200 was too big. I settled on M4/3 system, bought Panasonic GX1, it was small and light, but clumsy to use (painful to switch on/off, hard to use control dial) and pictures it took I did not like. Next one was Olympus E-PM1, and it was a blast, easy to use and making good photos. And when I got an E-M10II I was blown away by its IBIS and how fun it was to shoot with. I started shooting much more as it was giving me joy and I could take pictures in complicated conditions.

    Really sage advice in this episode. 👍🏻🙂
    Having done a bit of chopping and changing since I left Canon a few years ago I have one or two points to suggest.
    Invest in a system that fits well in the had and feels right. The older you get the stronger the argument for a lighter system.
    Going into a camera shop and handling the goods for a few minutes isn't good enough. I've done it and learned my lesson!
    If you are able to identify the camera and a lens you think might suit at say MPB buy it, test the heck out of it for a 7 to 10 days and if they don't work for you return within the 14 day grace period for a refund. Or rent.
    Unless you are shooting sports, aviation, and fast moving wildlife the 'specs' which get repeated obsessively on UA-cam? Well discount them by and large.
    If you print very big or crop very hard you don't need a huge sensor. And even if you do on occasion Light Room will now increase your pixel count using AI. Plus using a fuji X-E4 (26 Mp) not so long ago I took a picture in the dark at over 12000 ISO and LR pretty much sorted the noise after making the subject visible using the sliders.
    Be honest with yourself about the genres of photography you like and don't buy for the might like to do.
    Most of all get something you like to use, switch off the internet, buy a couple of books on art history and composition and go out and have fun. 👍🏻😄

    A very absorbing video, thank you, nice work. I've owned a number of different makes & models & formats over the years. Numerous suitable lenses. I'm currently using a XT-5 because of its IS, Sensor size, tilting screen & size. I think a suitable camera for me. I seem to be more addicted to large F stop & manual focus lenses. But if they fail to comply with my run & gun style, my iPhone with it's computational imagery is an essential failsafe, if a particular shot is required quickly. Maybe not complementary but any image is better than a missed image IMVHO.

    When I got back into photography last year, I was going to replace old my Canon 500D with a 90D. But I changed my mind and ended up getting an OM-1, and I’m so glad I did. The 100-400 lens is not too big, and the camera has great features for all the types of photography I like to dabble in. It’s awesome. 20mp is perfectly fine and file sizes aren’t too big. I love the menus. I love the customisation and the button placements. The only thing I don’t really like about it is the front dial is stiff and doesn’t move freely. Everything else is perfect. It’s really sad that the extreme consumption of today, and the constant hype and spec sheet war has really hurt Micro Four Thirds. When it would be ideal for most beginner and enthusiast photographers, as well as pros.

I accidentally purchased the P12-60 kit lens when I bought the GX9. The plan was to sell the lens to lower the price of the body. After using that lens it now lives on the GX9 along with the PL15. When I switched from film to digital I moved from a Mamiya 7 to a Nikon D7000. Both great cameras. At that time my main genre was landscape and dragging the Nikon and a robust tripod up hills became a faff so I bought an Olympus EM5 mkii. Great camera. Much lighter and I didn’t always bother with a tripod because of the IBIS.
    The problem was the menu and dials. My workflow then involved not taking photographs for weeks, sometimes even months because my job was all consuming. I could never remember how I’d programmed the dials and buttons and it was just so frustrating. So I decided to get a camera with old style controls so I could just pick up the camera and use it. An inheritance meant I could (briefly) afford a Leica so I got one. My genre now is probably 60% street 40% landscape so I wonder if your camera also changes what you do and your workflow rather than just getting in the way of what you photograph?

    I recently acquired a (used) A7R4. I got it to use as a multi-format camera. Because the sensor has so many pixels and (at last!) the EVF can be switched to different aspect ratios, and it has a crop mode, I can use the camera as a full frame model with wide aperture primes for shallow depth of field photography set to 4:3 or 1:1 aspect ratios (not a big fan of 3:2). Then when I want a more flexible or lighter solution, I switch to APS-c mode (26MP), again usually 1:1 or 4:3, and use the 18-135 superzoom. Used in this mode it is essentially emulating my G9 and acting as a slightly oversized m4/3 sensor, but the body is smaller than the Lumix G9 with a better EVF and (at last, for Sony) the ergonomics are decent. Now I no longer have to choose between FF and m4/3 when I go out (or carry both). You can have your cake and eat it and I have simplified decision-making a lot. I've kept the G9 for when I want to do long tele work.

Forget that. In my opinion, they still sell at a premium at $1500. I bought an A7C plus 35/2.8 for less than $1200. Basically a full frame X100V.

    Hi Craig! I really like your honesty in this, and many of your other videos.
    I personally don't think I've got the wrong camera, although I did buy it because it was what I could afford at the time. It's a 13 year old Nikon D7000 which, because of its age, I purchased for the bargain price of £140! Although it's quite a chunk of a thing, I love it! I could love it, and hug it and call it George! 😂😂
    The problem I have isn't the camera, it's the lens. It's the only lens I've got, and although it's good because it's quite a 'general purpose' lens, I still don't think it's quite the right one. Apart from anything else, it now seems to have developed a fault. It's an 18-200mm but it seems to be stuck at 35mm. It will extend but not retract. I think I need to go shopping! 😊😊

    I have had a Sony SLT for ages, which is still versatile and productive of good photos. Its APS-C + Minolta/Sony lens mount format means my old Minolta zoom is now 450mm equivalent. But even minimal kit is unwieldy and too heavy for a day's photography.
    After a mishap on holidays, I bought a Nikon 1, which I loved for all its faults. I have accumulated Nikon 1 bodies with dead 10-30 (28-80 eqiv) lenses. It fitted into a jacket pocket with the 10-30 closed and the 30-110 lens in the other pocket. 10 MP photos were great on screen or printed out on A4 paper.
    I like to walk around a city or a park and photograph, but the Sony is too unwieldy. I carted it up flight after flight of steps in an Oxford church on a freezing day and to get great photos, hanging out windows with aching arms and shoulder.
    Micro 4/3 now seems the smallest interchangeable lens system which also does decent videos (an occasional interest) available.
    Meanwhile I ask why, oh why didn't Nikon fix the shortcomings of the Nikon 1 system and make it reliable enough that people would continue buying it?

    Been at this since 1952. I've owned dozens of cameras, from many manufacturers and of several formats. (The Canon T90, by the way, is my favorite; I still have 2 of them. In my opinion, it's the first truly modern design from which all DSLR cameras now on the market have evolved.) As I used to tell my students if you want to figure out what kind of camera to use, here's your first step: check out the photo collections of places like the MOMA in NYC and see what was used to capture the images that hang there. Conclusion? Show me a photo, taken with any modern digital, that can compete with the ones you will see by old-timers like Cartier-Bresson, or even Julia Margaret Cameron (who died in 1879). What matters MUCH more than the machine - now "specialized computer" - is having good compositional skills, proper lighting (especially for portraits), knowledge of the interplay between shutter speeds and f/stops, and WHEN to release the shutter. (Modern cameras have actually led to a diminution of those basic skills for most photographers, I believe.) PS: You can capture a "decisive moment" better by using your brain and trained reflexes than you can by depending on luck after firing off 12 frames a second. BUT my Canon 5d m4 CAN capture mediocre frames MUCH MUCH faster than my 1st good film camera that was made in the '40's! So, there's that...

      You can do street photography with any camera. That is the truth but not much help. I’d like to spend your money but won’t.
      One requirement, for me, is size & weight. I must have small and lightweight gear. If I don’t follow that rule my neck and or back will cry. Thus I have opted for crop sensor bodies. M43 & APSC works fine.
      Next, the lens(es). Traditionally street shooters choose primes. There is a look with each focal length. 28,35,50mm are the most popular focal lengths. Some go wider or longer. I don’t shoot at night or seek subject separation. I go for slower lenses. Also used as they are cheaper. All my gear is used. Don’t know the focal length you want? Get a small zoom and see what focal lengths you use the most.
      I could tell you what I’ve selected but that would spoil your fun. There is fun in learning about and trying different gear. In your case, I disagree with Craig. There is no wrong camera. If you take it out and use it, there isn’t wrong gear. Hint: M43 and Fuji APSC have worked well for me. Their glass is good and the primes are small & lightweight. Importantly, the gear can be had at a reasonable price, whatever that means to you. Exception is Leica. Some people love Leica. If that is your choice, and it could be the right choice for you, be prepared to spend a lot of money.
      Do your research. Enjoy your journey. Craig has told us he has changed sensor size and brands over time. Maybe you’ll do that too. When you decide on your gear go out and enjoy it. Don’t and you’ve purchased experience paperweights. Know there are no perfect cameras or lenses. Buy the best gear you can find and afford. Whatever you select will be the right gear for you.

      @chrishowell5718 4 місяці тому +1

      @@swanseamale47 I know that. But it's a largely meaningless bit of marketing terminology, since 35mm film isn't some Platonic Ideal for the size of a camera frame, but merely the size that was in a previous era a good balance between image quality and portability, initially for movie cameras, and then for small rangefinder and then manual SLRs (and with high tech autofocus SLRs with rapid motorised film advances becoming increasing unwieldy) . Particularly when you consider that even at the height of the 35mm SLR's popularity, many portrait photographers considered 6x6 or even 6x7cm roll-film 'medium format' to be essential for optimum quality, and the OP of this video being a former medium format shooter. Why are 'medium format' sensors 5-6 times the size of so-called 'full-frame'? Because they are smaller than large format 6. 5 x 8.5inch plates (compared to which, *everything* is a crop sensor). My point is, there has always been a trade off between camera size and portability, cost, and size and quality of sensor. In the film camera era (and possibly for many people, before the age of monsters like the EOS1) 35mm was the sweet spot. These days, for many people APS-C or M4/3 may well be ideal.
