    It's difficult to tell exactly when an injury is healed enough to start running again. Even if you're feeling no pain it may still be too early to jump back into things. It's best to not do anything, at all, for a week (possibly two) when having knee pain. It usually goes away after a week or so of being off it (no training) but can take a bit longer, in some cases. During the time off, focusing on light stretching, massage and heat/cold therapy are the best things you can do.
    I get how much it sucks (trust me), considering you are trying to make progress, but your muscle memory will allow you to bounce back rather quickly. It can feel like you're losing lots of progress but, in reality, you won't lose much.
    While I don't run the distances you do (I usually stick between 10-15K), I have had injuries before (ankle, foot and knee, at different times) which required me to stop running. The longest was 3-1/2 months completely off running due to a foot sprain, and even after all that time off it only took me a couple weeks to get back to where I was before I stopped. Muscle memory is a real thing and that includes your heart and lungs which are also muscles.
    If you have a massage therapist or physical therapist near you, I'd suggest going. Massaging around the area will increase blood flow, getting more oxygen to the area and will speed up the healing process. Plus, they'd be able to give you more insight into what's causing the pain, itself.

      I think I'm going to stay off running or even cycling if my pain relates to IT band. I'll work on strength and conditioning for the next two weeks and see how that goes. I'm tempted to get to the start line still and see how far I can run, but I'm really not confident.
      I've been trying to book a Physio appointment but can't seem to get any until after the Marathon. I've enquired with a few others and they've never responded or can do the times when I have to be in the office.
      It's all going a bit wrong at the moment 😞
      Thank you for the reassurance about muscle memory. Hopefully I'll be able to get back into running again in no time 🤞

    Must be frustrating for you Yuenny but going the gym helped you stay positive and you kept the legs turning and your heart rate had a workout, that’s better than you said staying at home, there will always be another marathon if injury prevents this one, fingers crossed you get on the mend but if not you’ve done some serious training in the build up to it, you’ve done your longest ever run in some serious weather and you have achieved some goals just in your training alone, well done 👏🏻

      I love your positivity 😊 It's very disheartening but you're right, I have achieved quite a bit already just during training. Long distances I never thought I was able to run and I feel like I am mentally more resilient just pushing through some challenging workouts. It would be great to still be able to run the Marathon after all this, but I'll just have to try even harder if I fail to complete this one. I will get this done 💪

    Sorry yo hear about your injury. I know it's super frustrating, especially this close to your marathon. I tore my gastrocnemius (grade 2/3) last year by playing badminton, so I know how it feels. Give it some rest, and don't push yourself by running too soon.
    As soon as possible after an injury, such as a knee or ankle sprain, you can relieve pain and swelling and promote healing and flexibility with RICE-Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

      Thank you. It is really really frustrating! As much as we want to believe we're tough and can do physically hard things, sometimes the body just needs more time. I also need to remember that as I get older everything will need a bit more time to adapt and recover.
      How's your injury now and how long are/were you off for?

    Hope you'll get to the start line ok, undertrained and healthy is better than overtrained or injured i guess. If not then an Autumn marathon like the Chester marathon in October is a good one!

      Undertrained and healthy might be my only option, but if that works out then I'd happily take it 🤞 I actually have another Marathon planned for October which I definitely want to be more ready and prepared for, because it's one that I also really want to be able to complete.

    So frustrating and feel sorry for you. I also have the same pain although I think its posterior tibialis tendonitis. I'm hoping it is and not more than a stress fracture. You should stop running asap if the pain keeps coming back 2-3 weeks of no running.

    • @YuennyLam
      @YuennyLam  3 місяці тому

      Thank you. It is really frustrating, this close to race day as well. I hope for you it's not a stress fracture. That's what I'm worried about and that would take a lot longer to heal. I don't seem to have any luck booking a physio appointment which is also frustrating 😞 How's your training going other than the pain?

      @@YuennyLam I'm just taking it day by day. I'm pain free when I get a rest 2 days with no activity. My marathon is June so I can still train two months. But I'm listening to my left leg. No long runs and speed sessions just easy runs for now.

    • @YuennyLam
      @YuennyLam  3 місяці тому +1

      That's good you still have time to train. It might not be easy, but resting may be the only way for it to get better. I'm stuck deciding what to do. I don't want to just throw in the towel now though.

    Hey Yuenny, hope you're feeling better. It must be frustrating not being able to run while prepping for your marathon, but you should avoid running for the time being to prevent further, more lasting injuries. There'll be others races in the future. If you need workouts to keep up your fitness, you can check out the video by Ben Parkes. He also kept his Strava updated of his non-running training sessions during his injury period, so maybe you can refer to those too. Here's a link to his video where he explained training while injured. ua-cam.com/video/6t_SMyZ3Pgo/v-deo.htmlsi=DWdJrl9ckwt8ak5G

      Thank you. I only just saw this comment - it was held for review for some reason. It was very frustrating not able to run, but I managed to get there, despite struggling and not doing that well. I will be starting Marathon training again soon, so hopefully it'll go better this time. Are you training for anything at the moment?

    I would go see a sports doctor! I was training for my first marathon and I injured myself! Hang in there, but go see a professional to help you and guide you.

      I've been looking to book a Physio in the last two weeks but not had much luck. Finally managed to get one but it's not until after the Marathon. Sorry to hear you got injured too 😞 Did you recover in time for your first Marathon?

    Have you seen a professional sports therapist or podiatrist? My podiatrist is a genius and sorted many of my injuries as many knee pains are caused by foot issues.

      I've been trying to in the last 2-3 weeks with no luck. Finally managed to get an appointment but it's not until 3-4 weeks later 😞 Good it worked for you. Gives me hope knowing that seeing someone will help with my injuries 😊
