As an American I have never heard of the pub called Wetherspoons. Apparently this is very popular in the UK so today I thought it would be fun to check it out. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!

Wetherspoons is more like the McDonald's of pubs. The buildings are nice, drinks are very cheap. The food is a bit rubbish but fine for the price.

Honestly I think I'd rather see these lovely old buildings as a Weatherspoons or McDonald's etc than left to ruin or squatted. I bet a lot are listed so cant be changed too much but atleast it keeps them maintained

I'm going to echo the other comments. Wetherspoons is the pub you go to if you want to get half-way decent food and/or drink at a really low price. It is not where you go for really good food or really good drink.
Most pubs are run owned by brewers and will only sell their owner's beer (actually most pubs will also have one or two 'guest beers' also). Pubs that are not tied to a brewery are called 'free houses'. The free houses are usually small stand-alone businesses. Wetherspoon is unusual in that it is a chain of free houses.

Wetherspoons is above all “cheap & cheerful”, the tables can sometimes be a bit ‘sticky’ and the carpeting is bright & heavily patterned. Some of the actual buildings are quite beautiful & if Wetherspoons hadn’t repurposed them they would either have been left empty or perhaps demolished & repurposed. When we go there we almost always order using their online app - drinks will usually arrive at the table in 5 or 6 minutes & food is rarely longer than 8 or 10 minutes. They don’t offer fancy food, but there is a wide variety & it is of decent quality. If you do ever get across the pond, you should try and sample one - there’s bound to be one reasonably close in most parts of the country. PS/ The free refills of tea/coffee/hot chocolate are from self-service machines.

Commonly referred to as Spoons, they are by far the cheapest pubs in the UK, beer/ales can be between 60% and 30% cheaper than other pubs, lagers are typically 30% cheaper, (beer quality is good) spirits are usally cheaper if you buy a double/large, example: Whisky as a single shot/measure will be the same or slightly cheaper than others, but usally they offer the 2nd shot/measure for £1 (less than half the price of first shot) extra. Their food is not great, burgers are always burnt, (pre cooked that way for delivery) the best things to eat are there pizza and curry dishes in my opinion. Spoons are very popular because of price. Wetherspoons have their own app that's easy to use, it's very useful if the bar is busy, you can order/pay from your table, then it's brought over to you.

Wetherspoons is great. The food is fine, The fish and chips are better than most fish and chip shops and you get a beer with it. Pensioners can afford to get out and socialise in a place where they are welcome for a change. Students can leave their grimy rooms and meet their friends in an affordable place. The beer is fine and its served by pefectly competant friendly staff . The guy making this vidio is just showing off to his mates ,IThank you Tyler for looking into it more closely and not just taking this pretend Cocknies word for it. Most pubs in the UK are run by a chain but those called a "Free House" are independently owned and run. The latter can sell what they like, including their own or artisan beers. The pub chains dictate what brands can be sold in their individual pubs. Many of the chains that own the pubs are the big breweries themselves.

Had to go to the bar, food was poor - watery curry, one small poppadom and one naan bread the size of a crumpet. Drink expensive and service rubbish. Only went there as there wasn't a Spoons close. I think that the comparison as "the Mackas of the pub world." is apt. If you're the kind of person who regards Mackas (McDonalds) as a restaurant then you would enjoy it, mate. They certainly aren't clean & sparkly and the two I've been to smelt rather nasty. But yeah, the cheapest pubs around - which attracts a lot of young binge drinkers etc. The food is cheap as - but processed & frozen.
But no dogs allowed, kids aren't really considered, neither of the ones I went into even had gardens, let alone books & games. I too would rather go to a proper pub. How's a pub without dogs a real pub!! 😢

    • @MrBulky992

I would most certainly not go to *any* pub. I like country pubs with beams and interior woodwork, log fires and horse brasses or, in towns, pubs with mahogany bar tops and panelling, stained glass and mirrors.
I would rather go to a Wetherspoon's than a sports bar or a pub with huge widescreens mounted on the walls showing football etc. or loud music (of any type). You can have a conversation in Wetherspoon's and hear what your friends are saying.

Yeah true, kinda funny that in the US, places for beers (i.e. bars) and for breakfast are mutually exclusive.
In Europe (even more so than in the UK), they’re usually the same place. Lots of bars open at 7-8am. You go there in the morning for coffee and breakfast before work, and go to the same bar in the evening for beers after work.
Specialised breakfast cafes do exist, but more the sort of place you go to sit down and treat yourself in the weekend.
For your day-to-day rush hour breakfast needs, you go to your local bar. Cheap and easy.
Well at least in spain. But pretty much in all of europe, most breakfast places serve alcohol.

The interesting thing to me about Weatherspoons is the creative way that they name their pubs, usually with some local significance. For example in Oxford there is a pub called 'Four Candles' as it is near the school where Ronnie Barker (of Two Ronnies fame) was educated. Whenever I am in a strange town, I usually look for a 'Spoons' for lunch.

My local Spoons is a converted Church where I got married. Before it was a Spoons of course! The great benefit for real ale drinkers is that Wetherspoons has a fantastic variety of hand-pulled ales which change every week. So it's possible to try beers from small producers that you would never find in other pubs. And all at knock-down prices - the cheapest beer is £1.79 a pint with guest beers at £2.63. You'd pay at least £5 a pint for these in other pubs.

Every wetherspoons has its own pub name. Its usually named after a local famous/historic person or place specific to the area its situated.
Its not as bad as what he was suggesting. Wetherspoons attacts almost every type of person like families,, stag/hen do's, people finishing work, retired oldies and the down and outs of society. Its pretty much a small snippet of british society all under one roof😂

Wetherspoons is the place the riff raff go, dreadful mostly microwaved food, I wouldn't touch it, but it's fine for those wanting a basic cheap no frills meal and a drink. As for McDonalds our local one opens fully between 6am and 12 midnight and between 12 midnight and 6am the drive through only is open, so basically 24 hour service but drive through only for 6 hours. Our local Burger King which I much prefer opens 8.00am to 9pm daily.

The beers cheap because he buys all the end of line stock cheap that nobody else will be able to sell in time because he has massive amounts of outlets. Genius idea really but probably explains why its a bit shit on occasion but I guess you approach the brewery and say I'll buy all your beer thats got less than a week left for 25% of what it would be then sell to the public for nearly half what it would be, everyone wins. I havnt been in for years but around 2000 it might be £2.80 a pint elsewhere but £1.75 in Weatherspoons on a Saturday night so the savings really were worth it(dont hold me to those prices). To think happy hour in my local(Not a WS) was £1 a pint from 4-6, 7 days a week, what a head start. The foods edible and affordable + will soak up the cheap nearly off beer, not sure id risk fish or chicken but I feel that way in most places. Chips and burger cant go too wrong usually.

This is a very jokey almost parody description of Wetherspoons. The pub equivalent of McDonalds is probably the best way to describe it. Fairly standardised menus with quite a bit of pre prepared food reheated onsite when ordered. and great drinks selection. It's kinda slightly different at each pub, but still the same too. They keep alot of the original decor, i think. I'd hate to think of the UK now, if wetherspoons hadn't changed the game.
Too many pubs have been closing or changing into bistros or worse.
Maccy's is a little more heartless with takeovers (Going off the film 'Croc' mostly. It's called 'the Founder', but i was sure i watched it when it was called Croc. I maybe made it up. I can't find croc info)
I don't think many head to wetherspoons for breakfast. You just end up there, or order while in there.
Sorry to keep adding to this, but i loved you explaining a 'Waiter'? I think i understand 😉🤣
    Egg cup
"By this stage in the evening you've been at wetherspoons for about 6-7, possibly 8 hours"
"Doombar" it's a nice british beer made in Cornwall. It's a darker ale. It's not bad for a mass produced one
Food will vary from place to place, and even during different times. It'll depend on the staff. Remember these are cheap versions. You're better off at most 'chippys', to get your fish and chips. Closer to the coast, the better
You were happy at Coffee, but hot chocolate blew your mind. I love tea, never had a wetherspoons one.

Doombar (World’s biggest selling cask conditioned beer and often ghastly) and quavers (everyone’s guilty pleasure). There are other chains apart from Spoons, but often not as strongly branded - Stonegate, Marston’s, Greene King and others, sometimes linked to specific breweries. Scottish chain Brewdog ever have pubs in the US. Returning to Spoons, CEO Tim Martin is a rather controversial figure, having used the chain to spread pro-Brexit propaganda preceding the vote; not all of the staff were happy

I worked in a Spoons for a few years. They tend to be clean at 9am, but 11pm it probably won’t be. They do try to keep the beer fairly well, but you do get the exception. The food is basic and fast to serve. They have a card on the kitchen wall for each dish, which tells the “cook” what each item is cooked in and for how long, i.e grill for 1.5 minutes, microwave for 1 minute etc. and even how to plate it up. When I worked there, the aim was to get the food out within 15 minutes of ordering. Not sure if it still is.
We did have certain people that would barge in as you tried to unlocked the door at 9am, and some would stay for the majority of the day. Funny thing was that the 9am guys would be so desperate to get in, but have to wait at the bar while you finish hooking the doors back and stick out all the POS signs 😂

Wetherspoons is the "basic bitch" of pubs. It's the standardised framework of a pub, with a standardised menu of generally accepted pub classics. Depending on the location or building some have character but most are... generic. If ChatGPT was asked to create a pub, Wetherspoons is basically what you would get.
Wetherspoons is basically the measure that most British people would consider "an acceptable pub". You don't go in expecting a good pub and you aren't surprised if it is a bad pub. I hope that clears things up.

Like any chain it has pros and cons and there might be an occasional groan but no surprises. Saving redundant buildings isn’t top of the list maybe but having a pint and an acceptable plate of food in a church, cinema or even an Opera House (yes - Tunbridge Wells) that has been rescued without being vandalised is at least a novelty.

Weatherspoons are everywhere. The quality varies, but most are good and not dirty, some are exceptionally good. The food is cheap and not too bad at all (the all day breakfast is excellent). They have a big selection of good beer, and usually one ale at give away prices. The main reason I go to them other than the good beer at low prices, is that they don't have 25 tv screens and crap music blasting you like most other pubs (apart from the posh ones, but then you can't afford the beer and the ambience doesn't quite satisfy my thirst). I've never had a wrong order in any weatherspoons, and I've done many ove ther past 45 years, though I have seen nutters order the wrong thing and then complain about it. But Brits love to winge. I reckon most of this is tonge in cheek, with some truth in it. However, Weatherspoohs is NOTHING like McD's. It serves food!

Think they only started selling beer etc......a little later? Their usual beers are mostly the poor quality, popular chemical lagers but they do occasionally have decent guest ales at very good prices. In Harrogate is one (the first place to use gas street lights in the country as well) in what was formerly the Winter Gardens and did it kind of completely up compared to how it was, though a lot of its dead tatty now when you look at the corners at the edges lol (way for kind of people to visit a garden indoors etc).
Sometimes in a Wetherspoonds (depending on the look of the place) will have old artworks on the walls, like is a portrait of the 1st Mayor of the Ripon City Council, ordered as such by James VI in Scotland and by then by about a year I in England, when he ordered the formation of the council and gave a proper charter to Ripon (3rd smallest city in the country, though when excluding Wales is it becomes the 2nd smallest after the City of London.

historically most pubs were owned by a specific brewery. the landlords were tenants. but more and more "freehouses" came about and have become the norm. Now we have a chain company that keeps prices down and does cool things like banning music so people can socialise. It was different when they first started popping up. they now have an app so you can order to your table, table service. And yes, its the mcdonalds of pubs, but its pretty good place to socialise with free coffee refills. its not a typical pub experience. some are better than others, but mostly down to the area/clientele that visit. they areusually well kept places, as good as a regular hotel lobby type of atmosphere.
