DiResta's Cut: Chicken Coop
Вставка

- Here’s a problem we didn’t expect Jimmy DiResta to have: Needing to house fast-growing chickens. The chicks he and girlfriend Taylor recently acquired to populate their upstate farm have rapidly grown into chickens, and they’re getting too big to live in the house. Solution? Build them a chicken coop.
A predator-proof chicken coop, naturally. The flightless birds will require a fox-proof dwelling, so Taylor designs one, then Jimmy builds it, using a time-saving stacking method to keep the framing square. (By the bye if you’re wondering why the camera angle looks odd when he’s up on the roof, it’s because with both hands occupied, Jimmy had to hold the camera in his mouth.) - Навчання та стиль
Another great video, nice job on the coup. Mr Diresta you've got a great girl, she welds, not afraid to get dirty, build stuff and shes cute. Good girls are hard to come by, she's a keeper! I was lucky enough to have a great girl for 31yrs before she passed from brain cancer, she made my life infinitely better and great sons. Enjoy every day with her. Keep the videos coming, my older son got me started watching them, you make it all look easy. Thank you.
Great video Jimmy, love to watch all your stuff and fill that in with the podcast! You're always an inspiration!
Got a nice chuckle from your observation that on the last piece you have figured out what you should have been doing all along. It's heartening to know that others have the same experience.
Great video Jimmy - I'm about to start a coop myself, so it was great to see what you've done. I would highly recommend a board under your roosts/perch as the chickens will crap there often and it's easier to scrape a board than to constantly replace bedding. We try to keep things real clean and the droppings board has helped immensely. Thanks again for the video - I enjoyed it!
Your outdoor construction videos never get old with your great shots and camera angles! Great stuff!
Cool to see you and Taylor working on a project together. Thanks for sharing!
I came across this video and thought, "huh, 8.1 million views, let's see what they got." I was not disappointed! Such a great build! Thank you for the motivation!
The stuff you put on the roof of the run is what we call chicken wire. The reason that it is cheaper than hardware cloth is because there are no welds (and a lighter gauge wire).. It is just twisted. The welds seem to give out early outside anyway because the weld makes it more suseptible to rust. (if it isn't one thing, its another). If you put this stuff they call Gator Skin around the perimeter at the ground level, and let it extend about a foot above the soil, the structure will last a lot longer. It is a really tough plastic that forms a durable moisture barrier. Mud and chicken shit splatters up when it rains and it can rot faster than you think. Just rip a 1x4 down the middle with a 45 degree angle on one edge to finish off the top edge. If you spade the run once in a while, some of the seeds they missed will sprout and they will eat that grass, too. I love chickens. Especially with garlic sauce.
Absolutely amazing man!!!! So cool Taylor visioned and helped build it!! You always do such great work!!! Ty for sharing!!
looks good! i built a 10X12 shed very similar in my yard with the same 2x4 roof. it's been fine - even with the rough winters we've had.

I'm holding out for a DiResta weather vane. You gotta. You gotta do it.
Great build as usual. It's clear you got as much of a kick out of "hardware cloth" as I did.
A woman that walks on rocky ground outside bare footed. Great! I wish you two the best of luck Jimmy.

Another great build, the 12+ minutes whizzed by. Cheers Jimmy!
Jimmy, heavy clear plastic on outside and inside window works great in winter, if you build a taller rost for them at night, you can build trays that go under the rost and put PDZ (an ammonia neutralizer that you can get from Tractor Supply stores) in the trays about 1-1 1/2 inch deep and the droppings will be very easy to clean up using a cat litter box scoop. This also keep the odor to a minimum. Great build as usual, TU for the videos.
Amazing, I am going to be building a shed and this gave great insight on how to do some light framing!
Jimmy I like the commentary you provide for these videos.
This is precisely what all of your videos need....more Taylor!
Idyllic. Beautiful. Fun. Great video Jimmy!
I hope you both get many healthful breakfasts from the "crew."
Amazing as always Jimmy, I love how you keep things simple but make them awesome at the same time! Big Fan from Scotland
I am a HUGE Diresta fan, but especially LOVE these narrated vids. PLEASE keep em' coming!
I like your work. You make me happy ! Positive energy !
Love using rough sawn lumber for coop builds. 16" O.C. spanning the 8' you will be fine with metal roofing. You may run into problems with ice and snow build up on the chicken wire top. For the window all you need is some plexi if you want to keep it simple to keep the drafts out. Great Job, like the mix of the breeds of the chickens.
Just in love with this kind of work, audio comments are like the job, brief but sharp, very smart. a million thanks for all the inspiration you give us, Mr Diresta, the best for decades ^^
Great Work on the Chicken House/Run! I keep chickens (about 30 right now) 1 idea ... I think you are going to want to raise your perches up at least 18 inches off the floor. It gives you more flexibility as to how and where you put your laying boxes. Most experts say perches should be much higher than the laying boxes. and chickens love really high perches - even up to the ceiling. In fact my chickens all crowd up on the top 2 perches or roosts. Now that they are full size some of the lower ranking chickens are having to use the 3rd row down. :)
Hey Jimmy, love your videos. I got a great tip from my grandfather when building my chicken coop - use a garden fork to tension the square mesh as you fix it off. Just stick it in the mesh and lever against the framing member. my whole coop is tight as a drum.
I built our coop out of a poorly made shed (on my property when purchased). it was built with no floor and it's really silty sand so not a great storage spot. I used the boards off of the deck and stairways I had to redo (insurance guy was mad we dropped full coverage on the cars and decided to do a home inspection) to save money. we had a drought her in the Midwest and I bought some chicken wire to section off the yard to seed grass so only needed on roll out of pocket. had some old gate hardware for the doors. I used limbs for perches and they love it with the natural edge. I had a crank out window from a remodel I did I put in with a fan I found. I used pallets on the floor as it's easier to clean in the winter due to freeze. I wrapped the pallets in rubber roof membrane. only out of pocket was the one roll I needed of chicken wire and I bought insulation as we had some frostbite on combs the first year even with heat lamps. I need to replace the roof and have some short cut steel building sheets I plan on using. found is always priced right. lol thanks Jim I have been a fan since you built the pool table years ago.
Nice coop. We did something similar a few years back, I just did a shingle roof and siding to match our house.
One thing we have learned is the chickens overwinter just fine, as long as there is good ventilation. No heat necessary.
Keeping their water from freezing... well that's a pain in the arse :)
Have fun!
Hey jimmy, when you make the nesting boxes, cut a hole in the wall and mount them on the outside with a hinged lid. That way you can collect the eggs without having to go inside the coop and get chicken crap in your crocs.
Great work! 👍
One thing that could be improved is giving yourself the option to move the cage on all three sides of the coop periodically.
Rotating the location of the cage would enable the grass to grow on the two sides that are not being used at any one time.
So the chicken would have a much cleaner, healthier out-coop area, and have green grass and vegetation to include in their diet.
Think we need a diresta and camerata collaboration
That is a GREAT video! My wife is obsessed with having chickens and now she is bugging me to try and duplicate what you created. Lol. Thank you very much for sharing.
Love it! Amazing job as usual!!
The cheapest hardware cloths I found, I got a few days ago in Lowes. It was like $19 for tex feet x 30 inches. Ive been using it for years for chickens and rabbit cages. Think of a good system for watering the chickens. I just built a 4 inch PVC system thats gravity fed and had auto filling poultry cups that I got on Amazon pretty cheap/ One thing I wold have suggested was the roof, if you could put something that lets light through, it would help a lot plus help keep it a little warmer in the winter. Try aruchana chickens, they lay blue eggs!
Hey Mate, Great work.
One of the better Chicken Coup videos on here.
One of the simplest chicken coops I have seen. Going to steal the idea.
I use the Paslode nail guns a lot on some jobs, apparently the gas is propelled from a rubber balloon inside the canisters, when the canisters go out of date the rubber balloons perish and loose the elasticity = ballache.

I used to be horrible at building chicken coops. I used to pay a fortune for them too! I no longer suffer from those problems anymore. Here's a great guide for building affordable chicken coops: ChickCoop.xyz
Good job. Very good video well done. You take care Michael from Australia.
Nice build.
We use a 5 gal bucket with a 90 Deg 3in elbow and a screw on lid to help keep down on the chicken food mess. They wont toss it or dig thru it as bad. The screw on lid helps for easy check/fills and having the elbow up an inch or so from the bottom makes it easy for them to eat. I only put one, but I think 2 or maybe 3 would be good for more chickens.
Mind blown @ all the dislikes..must be people who can't do things for themselves..Great vid as always DiResta..
So are you saying if you didn't have guests, the chickens would continue to stay inside your house? :P
2:17 adorable kiss
btw nice project
Beautiful work as usual Jimmy.
It looks like you have a beautiful piece of property :-)
That is one fine looking chicken coupe !!
nice thank you for sharing.
you can train chickens to follow you with old bakery bread.
they love and need greens [weeds]
good luck with then.
This makes me want to build a chicken coop, and I don't even own any chickens.
you can buy froze one from kaufland and trow in it
I'm always impressed by the amount of wood you American's use to actually make basic structures that barely take any weight... of course, the sturdier the better, but I wonder about cost/efficiency. Well done in any case.
And cocoa .... Yalk really witty .... I am proud of you, you have a very wonderful ideas and strong resolve of the invention ... I wish you a happy life

Great build Jimmy! I know its not your style but on larger builds like this I think it would be cool if you turned the project in to a series of videos because and showed a bit more detail. Ive never used a nail gun or did any framing and would like to hear explain them. I learn a lot from watching your work. Thanks for the vid!
Nice job as usual Jimmy.
Nice honest build. Great work.
great idea to build the wall superimposed on each other...
"Hardware cloth" is the wire mesh with square openings, welded or soldered at each corner. "Chicken wire" is the hexagonal spaced wire that is twisted into a "wire cloth".
rstevewarmorycom Often you may see what you call chicken wire, is also called chicken netting.
It's a serious correction because chicken wire can easily be ripped through. Netting is usually only for birds of prey overhead as a protection. I imagine critters can get through it like raccoons even on a roof. Always use hardware cloth. 1/2"
@@jessicamcneice5791 Thats' true, but used heavy duty hardware cloth with only 1/2 inch openings.. I'm not a Spring chicken at 60+, but I can rip the lightweight hardware cloth (metal mesh) like paper with are hands.
There's a cool and inexpensive fencing we use inside a fenced in 50' x 50' area. I use the plastic deer netting and I can easily move it for their enjoyment and not need a chicken tractor as this temp run always open into the smaller permanent run with their coops.
It doesn't seem all that fool proof to me either but it seems to work. Maybe double layering could help even more. I am about to buy one , and they all have hardware cloth.

Roofing tip: Take a foam pad up with you .It helps keep traction and protects you from the heat of the roof.
His camo crocs could always double as foam pads. ha!
Im not sure if you can get them in the US, but in Australia every second house is roofed in corrugated iron and roofers wear sand shoes called Dunlop Volleys. They'll easily grip a 30deg roof.
+thermmaloverload I will look into those. Have a great day.
i think most athletic stores carry them. used for rock climbing
garden shops sell them for knee pads for gardening
Jimmy Diresta is one of those people who can make chicken coop construction actually interesting to watch.
This is awesome! Not just the building part but also the narration is interesting.
great video. finally my favorite carpenter builds something I've built. thank you for the videos
Lucky Taylor to have such a good dude with fantastic woodworking skills! You rock!
Great build you did there, very nicely utilized
So sturdy. Really awesome coop 👍❣️
if your not careful. those chickens will be wanting custom made beds, an escalator , and a mirror ball for when you are not home. and of course they need your logo engraved into the door with gold ... love your work keep on and play hard.
And later on they will file for divorce and get away with everything.
Really enjoying these more Architectural videos :)
It's not the Taj Mahalo man, it's a chicken coop. Besides, with that low of a pitch that would be a long seat cut and take alot of strength out of that 2x4...
***Taj Mahal
I like it as Taj Mahalo.

Nice job. On the video as well as on the framing and the end product itself!
Looks great. I built something similar a couple years back. Mine has an automatic coop door that opens/closes with the sunrise and sunset. I've also installed a exhaust fan inside my coop. Purpose being to pull in fresh air and, of course, exhaust the old air. Helps with the ammonia smell from the chicken poop. Lastly, I have a red LED lamp inside, also on a timer. It turns on an hour before sunset and turns off an hour after. Seems to help draw the chickens into the coop well before predators come out. My chickens are free range so they have no protected cage.
What about damp? Won't the base of the wood rot over time?
"Before I put it in place. I screwed it quite a bit." Diresta, you are my hero!
Andrew Kavanagh aoxhjjhfxvji
I mentioned hardware cloth at work the other day and my co-worker spent the next half hour making fun of me for not saying chicken wire. If Jimmy Diresta didn't know what it was, I suppose I can forgive my poor, simple co-worker.
Great job. Love the design.
I was gonna say Taylor has a good pair of legs until I realised they were yours! Good work on the coop, more work needed on the legs.
Where's Welder? You two complement each other, both very talented.
Nice project. the man works the woman looks at :)
You did a great job. What a beautiful coop.
Jimmy rocks out with his crocs out!

Why do chicken coops only have 2 doors?
If they had 4 doors, they'd be a chicken sedan... :D
Buh dum TSSSS!
Nice one
I think you ruin the joke with the spelling :P
Fixed!

+Greg's Garage GREAT LINE! IT'S A NICE COUPE, JIM!
Congratulations! Beautiful place and great work. You are the best.

It's done! Whirlygig weather vane for the corner post would be cool, unless the sound spooks the chickens
really nice job! the chicken looks so happy
Hope you add exterior NEST BOX to retrieve eggs, without entering the pen.
Whats a Forrest ???
the chickens are so cute! love your work!!!
That was a nice build. And perfect commentary

Now you can design and build a movable coop you can move around with your tractor to fertilize your garden.
Nice build... Thanks for sharing!
So now you and Tim Sway can compare poultry stories. You should feature them on a podcast. Oh and it only makes sense that you would be scared at at least one point in this build. Great work as usual!!
Thumbs up for painted tools.

Honestly kind of surprised the GF doesn't have DiResta on her somewhere...
Maybe she does 👀👀🍑🍑
I foresee a tramp stamp DiResta tattoo in her future...
Hot Iron Maker's Mark on the left ass cheek. . .
In all seriousness though, this build was really cool!
You never know, she might have a hidden tattoo somewhere ._.
Taylor has a butt.
If it gets really cold you should use Round roost poles. We had a really cold storm one year and we lost some toes from the blood getting cut off from the square edges of a roost. After that all round edges and it is more nature and we like to keep it as close to nature as we can, so we cut tree limbs for roost all the time. Feed them guys red worms too if you really like tasty eggs, we have a small red worm farm from our dogs that we get ours from. Nice build should last a very long time.
I know a lot of chippies who have issues with the gas going off. DeWalt do a gas less framing nail gun that's an absolute beast. Worth a look if you ever decide to update your Paslode, you'll never have to buy extra gas again and it works off the 18V Lithium batteries.
Today in Diresta, we will Diresta. Diresta in the resta so we can di and then resta. Besta is resta then di and do... So let's resta :)
Really cool build, as always

Welcome to the chicken world. Nice job on the coop.
The chickens have a better house than me.
I never took you as a crocks man. lol
Hahahah that's BC I have to remove the shoes for the house. I man never wants to do this. Crocks make it doable.
Hahaha, love it!
+jimmydiresta Hey Jimmy could you design a 🆒 looking portable BBQ pit and make it that would be so awesome👍✌
Do you know why Crocks have those holes all over? It;s to let you dignity seep out

I really like it. My mom would love something like this. Great work!
EXCELENTE .......IDEA
