Alonso is surprisingly clever with these kinds of "curveball questions" from the media.
I remember one interview that they were doing to Alonso and Sainz once, where they asked them something about their favorite video game (I think that's what it was?) and Sainz mentions some kind of Mario game, maybe it was Mario Kart. This prompts Alonso to claim that he's too old to be familiar with "those things"... But later, the difficult question comes:
They ask them who their idol was a a kid. This was a curveball because it is not a well kept secret that Carlos Sainz idolized Alonso as a kid. He's young enough that Alonso would have been driving the blue and yellow Renault when Sainz was still a little kid. And pretty much everyone who's familiar with both drivers is aware of it. Alonso clearly "rescued" Sainz from that question by saying "for me it was Ayrton Sena but for you it was probably Timon and Pumbaa or Mario Bros."
They both then laughed about it and the potentially awkward question was avoided.
Why is it awkward though? Plenty of sports people have situations where they get to play with their idols and readily acknowledge that.
Yeah nothing more awkward than telling your childhood hero that you looked up to them, phew dodged a bullet there...
Also if I recall correctly Sainz had already pretty much said it was Alonso in the moment before that happened.

@@RRich100 If you definely truly rich as I do (meaning that sponsoring their kid to make it to f1 doesn't impact their lifestyle significantly. So the family would need to have a NW of $30MM+ as the road to f1 costs roughly $10MM), then almost all except for maybe stroll, norris and zhou
Though, jokes aside, Fernando might be the most talented and all around driver i've seen in my life. I've never seen Ayrton though. Shumacher might've been the strongest, Lewis is damn good as well, but never seen someone doing what Fernando was doing with the car.

i am new to formula but when i saw fernando holding lewis for 11 laps i got to knew at once why he is one of the greatest of all times.
Just because he did not win more world Championships It does not mean he is not better than those who did It already.

Ive said it before and i'll say it again, there are many Great drivers in Formula 1 history, you could argue for Lewis, Michael and even put Seb up there with being the all time great with all they have won. Fernando is however, in my lifetime the Best formula 1 driver I have ever seen and nothing will change my mind on that. 2012 was a season that really made me appreciate how good Alonso truly was.

@@TheTororist a lot of stuff happened in that McLaren. Plus its never that simple. I could make quite a few arguments about why 2007 doesn't prove anything bad about Alonso. At the wnd of the day in his Ferrari years Alonso was overperforming Hamilton by a lot even when arguably Hamilton had the much better car.

The thing that separates Alonso from Schumi, vettel (not so much in the later part of his career though) and Hamilton is his decisions off the track. With a good team he would've won at least 1 more WDC. On track I rate him on the same level as Ham, better even at sometimes (although I believe he lacks in the consistency department and Ham is better on wet days), Ham's decision to leave McLaren for Mercedes is arguably the single most successful decision in the history of F1 and Alonso's case was just the opposite

And I agree, off track decisions are the reason why he only has 2 titles, but that's not just his fault, since you also depend on luck. He literally states as a fact that McLaren was not against Alonso and that he was fully supported with a dedicated crew of loyal mechanics and engineers who were 100% committed to him all season long as they had a fierce rivalry with Hamilton's side of the garage and wanted nothing more than to beat them in the championship, even after he tried to blackmail Ron Dennis. That's not to mention how, before the season even started, every crew member wanted to work with Alonso, not Hamilton, for the obvious reason that Alonso was the proven reigning world champion who had just dethroned Schumacher and was seen as their best chance for success. None of them wanted to work with Hamilton because it was regarded as being assigned the #2 car and there was political infighting behind the scenes with some team personnel even going against protocol by asking senior members of staff to make sure they worked on Alonso's car. Do the Alonso fans know more about what happened in 2007 than someone who worked there at that time?
