Coming from the Philippines, there is a movie "Ghost Bride" in 2017 that is based from this. In the movie, the female lead started experiencing bad luck (apparently everyone around her dying for weird reasons) when she did things that the matchmaker told her not to do as a wife of a dead person. The movie was so creepy that made me think negatively of this subculture from China.
You'd be surprised to know just how common it was, even up until just a few centuries ago and in multiple parts of the world, to make the living wife accompany the dead husband to the afterlife lol.
I think this is extremely sad on both ends ( more for the women who were murdered). It’s horrible that not even in death these women can rest. And also the for families who think that they are doing a good thing for their passed loved one, having no idea they just participated in cutting someone else’s life short ☹️
There’s actually a comedy movie called “marry my dead body” and it’s also like this but without all the you know bad parts of ghost marriages but it’s funny, I recommend!
I watched it on Netflix yesterday. It was actually entertaining and sad but then it made me curious if this was a common practice, so wanted to research and saw Stephanie had a video on it. Now I'm going down the rabbit hole of others reacting to it.
sebastine: did any of you watch flowers in the attic? me: OH MY GOD, THE TRAUMA OF THIS SERIES. you gotta watch the prelude where they tell the story of the grandparents because jesus christ it's even more fucked that the other movies... it all started with malcolm, corrine's father. anyway, there was a 2022 comedy taiwanese bl movie called "marry my dead body" where the male lead, a cop, gets a red envelope CHASING his ass and because of it he's forced to marry the ghost of the other male lead, otherwise he's gonna be jinxed for the rest of his life; he doesn't have to die to marry him tho... so yeah, ghost marriages are/were a thing.
@@commercialgirl24 i haven't read the books yet (have them on my tbr, but i'm still traumatized by the movies and need a break honestly 😆) but the movies were so good - and every single actor did a wonderful job in each movie like good god it was a traumatic experience.
I’m not sure if you got my prior message but since you’ve been doing some pretty heavy content I would like to make a suggestion - you can take it or leave it. Stephanie Soo has a video called Cringy Text Messages a Taco & Burger King Mukbang. The first half is about a Chinese billionaire trying to throw game at a well-known lesbian. The second half is about Kris Wu “trying” to flirt. It’s pretty funny but also scary in hindsight.
I love Stephanie Soo's videos, and I also like hearing your commentary to them! I've never heard of killing people/stealing bodies for marriage, but I do know the Scottish Burke and Hare murders: In 1828 in Scotland, two men would rob cemeteries and then sell the bodies to an anatomy lab for research. Eventually, they ended up killing people for more bodies to sell. The two men's wives would lure people to the lodging house, and Burke and Hare would kill them. When they were caught, Hare and his wife were granted immunity in exchange for testimony. Burke was hanged and his wife was set free because her case was found not proven in court. The doctor wasn't charged, but his reputation was ruined in Edinburgh so he left for London. Because of the murders, the Anatomy Act of 1832 was passed, making it easier for anatomy labs to get bodies for research, in the hopes of reducing the black market in stolen and murdered corpses.
For the live streamer; I can't even imagine the mental desperation she went through; as for the internet whoremongers? people need lives. The other stories were just unbelievable. I have never heard of ghost marriages, it's crazy to me. Humans though, evil money hungry assholes are just ridiculous. Greed! ugh
It’s interesting as much as it is devastating. As a woman who grew up in America, you face certain situations almost daily just because of your gender. You’d think death would be the ultimate peace, but not even in death are you able to escape. I respect the culture fully, it’s just some things I can’t wrap my head around, but at the same time I can fully believe it. As wild as it is, there is no border when it comes to certain things, even things like what was discussed in Steph’s video. The world is a strange place, a beautiful grotesque place.
I'm a bit late, but it's not just this culture. America is a very very new country, meaning it naturally has little history or culture. If you go to other continents (which existed for thousands of years) you will experience A LOT of cultural differences.
i hate people like Z, lee and people who do cyber bully, like whats wrong with you?! and words can be a "deadly weapon". thats why we have to watch our mouth/words. I'm really curious, do the people who bullied Little Kitty feel guilty? And her ex who slandered her feel guilty?
This is crazy. There is that saying that says “till death does us part” so if you’re already dead, there’s no way that you can get married from a consensual standpoint.
Some traditions should be abandoned. Just because it's traditional, does not make it a good idea. Slavery is a good example. This is true for all cultures
If you've seen the K-Drama "Hotel Del Luna" then this wasn't too much of a shock to your system because there was a whole episode on it. There are parts of Africa that do this too but it's usually, in my experience, where a couple have a child and then one of them passes before they are married. Apparently, the child's paternal ancestors will not recognize the child if the parents are not married so the parent that is left will marry the "ghost" of the deceased for the sake of ancestral rites and what not.
i watched the Bollywood movie called "Mangal Pandey" a few years ago and blow my mind when in some part of the movie they showed a scene like that, the widow should be die burned, but the movie is a musical based on an iconic independence hero of India. I like it the movie and music.
I actually have a friend who was adopted in china because her mother abandoned her because of that one child rule but thank goodness her adoptive mother took her out of there
aAA I FORGOT ABOUT THIS ONE Absolutely not-- just variables, room for error, surveillance, fingerprints, toxicology, witnesses Giving a story but not knowing what witnesses are corrobborating or not Maybe I'd be good at planning Dang the title-- it was a multi thing
Yeah... Who doesn't know that feeling? You discover that the body, which was buried is alive and instead of freaking out that this person was alive, you get annoyed that you did buy a dead body and now it's the other way around. The audacity! 🙄🙄🙄 Wtf are people insane? To answer your question at the beginning: I couldn't. I have no pokerface xD I literally would feel so bad about lying or faking everything that I would instantly tell someone that I ended someone's life 😅
58:00 There were many more people created. ,,Adam and Eve" is a symbol as ,,parents of humanity". The Bible has a lot of metaphors. When you read something from there you have to analize a little.
@@SebastineThanks for responding. I understand, take your time bro, it's sometimes overwhelming especially if they have like multiple seasons. But that makes sense.
I've actually heard of this before. Its odd to me, but yes it is a thing. 🙀 I think i first read it in a Piers Anthony book decades ago❤ Ive read all the Flowers in the Attic books The bible was very incestuous.

When women can't even have peace in death...it's crazy.
1:04:51 not on the 4th cuz 4 is pronounced "si" in mandarin which also means "die" so 4 is actually an unlucky number!!

4 is pronounced the same as death in Chinese so usually they avoid the number even on elevators there won’t e a 4th floor button it’s just 1,2,3,5…

The books are SOOO much better than the movies. The movies are still good, but they are honestly low key trash compared to the books.

Jesus… They did a Bones episode about this.. it’s always the weirdest episodes on these shows that are actually based on reality 😧
There was a Episode on Hotel Delluna regarding ghost weddings aswell.

"What happens on the 4th?" the number 4 is considered bad luck in a couple of Asian countries.
Some traditions should be abandoned. Just because it's traditional, does not make it a good idea. Slavery is a good example. This is true for all cultures
Ironic to avoid the death number 4 even when doing a ghost wedding

Maybe it's just my western thinking but I can't even fathom this to be honest
because 4 is pronounced or the word is similar to the word death
If Adam and Eve kept everything familial we’d all be deformed.
