Hell yeah. Everything Uncle Larry talks about and teaches us is throughly enjoyable and so awesome to learn about old baseball and football cards and the crazy prices….and if you’re reading this Uncle Larry…we are more than interested and care about everything you have to talk about and everything you like. Not one episode has been the least bit boring…quite the opposite…I look forward to every episode more than any movie or TV show I might possibly look forward to.
Speaking of CTE. I played hockey for 20 years and had so many concussions but back in the 1990’s when you would get smashed on the ice and have a concussion the coach would just say…” wait 5 min and go back out “ Now it’s not the same as the NFL but I took hundreds if not thousands of major blows to the head playing 12 months a year 5-6 times a week and now at 38 years old I get some intense migraines and anxiety and doctors now say it’s from all the concussions and blows to the head. Anyway…sorry for the long comment but I just wanted to let you know we all care a lot about every single thing you’ve taught us and talk about…

Your videos never fail to entertain Uncle Larry. I've been buying pedals since 1974. I kick myself when I think of how many I've traded or given away. Same with those Fender Princeton amps. I've had several of the old ones that I let go for cheap. And as long as I'm reminiscing, I was born in 1952. I ruined a shit load of great collectable baseball and football cards with the spokes of my bicycle. Much respect...

Hey Tom- Congratulations on more than two years of your channel. I'm sitting here wearing the same t-shirt as you (not sure how that happened) and proud to be a hardcore Homeskooler. All of this with you is like one of those things that is so magical and historical that some people may not fully appreciate it. I mean here you are at the absolute top of your game and you have been kind enough to bring us along on this rocket ship of a ride with you- just hanging and chatting in the garage, frigging on tour with you to LA, all across the USA with some of my heroes, Ann Wilson, Joe Walsh, Vince Gill, to Germany and Nova Scotia. And hanging in the studio with you is just a raw treat for all of the senses. Look, imagine if Jimmy Page had a channel and took you along for the ride? That is how stoked I am to "know" you and actually learn some music from you that you have dedicated 1000% of you life to the last 30 years. There is nothing else like it. And it's nothing like, oh your so great, because with you we are all in this together. Because of how you showed us how all guys you hang with really love each other and the down to earth, just cool, sweet soul that you are has made me a better person. When I think that I am being open, and curious, and kind, and humorous like you would be- all of my relationships are better. You are my guitar hero (along with Guthrie Trapp, Jimmy Page, and many others) and more than that you are one of the best examples of what a bro should be. P.S. And I am still working on Friday Night Slop from episode 16 or whatever.

Tom, I just wanted to say thanks for all of the videos and musical knowledge you share. You’ve enriched my life even though I was late to skool. I started guitar at 10 so I’m about 26 years in at this point. Whenever I hit a plateau, I surf through your videos and always find something new to work on. Thanks again for all you do!

I love the part in the The Fabulous Thunderbirds live album when they open up the vocal mic and the guitars just bloom because it's picking up the cabinets behind them. It's a magical sound.
Not a big football fan myself, but as your friends, I think most of us enjoy your enthusiasm. And card collecting is just fun.

Tom....that the video of the '09 vs '59 crash is crazy...I'm 55yrs old and never researched but wondered how the "old boats" would fair....Ouch, that would hurt in the '59. Love the rest of the video and all the musical (& non-musical) talk. It's what keeps me locked into the channel. It would be a "gem" to get Ann on video, look forward to that day. I can't wait for your Bday show at 3rd&L, I love seeing you live around town with your friends.
I fkn love you Larry, you always manage to hit the mark with me. Firstly, Jim Otto is one of my 5 favorite football players of all time. Second, Mr. Howard Davis the enigmatic designer of the DMM. Weird, weird, weird indeed. It was so interesting to hear you say that because my communication with him in fixing DMM's (something he solicited at the time) was also quite an absurd act of strangeness. I'm almost glad to know my experience wasn't an isolated incident.
Then your opinion about recording your effects, that was really refreshing to hear. The studio I record at, up near where I live (a great studio with great people and great gear but this story remains nonetheless) starting the first time I recorded this dissuaded me from recording my effects onto the tape. I was really disappointed because to me, it was a core part of my sound. Nothing insane, just two different flavors of chorus, one for clean, one for some parts of some leads. They told me that effects were better added in post and I just wasn't confident enough to disagree. Everything else they suggested I was happy with but that was one thing I wasn't and it's always bugged me about those recordings and made listening to them less fulfilling. So it was nice to hear encouragement on the subject from a seasoned and highly regarded/respected session musician.

This is by far my favorite "show" outside of Magnum PI in my 53 year history of watching "shows"...keep shining :)
I knew we were kindred being a saggitarius. I just turned 50 yesterday Larry. I cry all the time also . Its a good quality dont let anyone tell u its not tuff or cool. Crying shows that you are a truly emotional person. Always good in my book.

Man this episode had some real interesting side stories and fantastic guitar tidbits too. The Mickey Mantle card history was real interesting and damn! ..I thought for sure the 59' Bel Air would be a solid steel tank against today's vehicles. But nope! Fantastic video Uncle Larry!

Tom - your lesson with Oz was incredible. When you talked about singing the melody it made perfect sense. What do you recommend to facilitate finding the notes you are singing faster - is that ear training somehow or thinking about intervals within the key?

Hey Tom, boy I would love have a Roy Smeck! Great present from Vince. Be sure to keep that slide with the instrument as it is vintage and probably used by the original owner. Get yourself a new stainless or chrome Stevens type bar and try it - a lot less noisy. The sharp end will allow pull-offs like Jerry does. Also, that Black Mountain springy thumbpick works great lap style. Loved your Gruhn impression!

I remember a ‘65 Pontiac Bonneville backing into my mom’s ‘55 Caddie in town square Lima, Oh circa 1966. The bumper fell off of the “Bonneville.” Didn’t scratch the paint off the Caddie… a modern car verses that wouldn’t would explode. Although the passengers in the new car would live!

Don Ho! Only us old guys remember him and Tiny Bubbles! I'm an old Ohio boy too. Followed the Browns religiously back in the days of Jimmy Brown and Lou Groza! One of the few straight ahead kickers who could make a 50 yard field goal! I think he held the record for longest FG until the soccer-style kickers came on.
Mahalo Larry! Do you remember the large cardboard type football cards? I think they came out in around 70-71 time frame. BTW Dick Butkus was my favorite. I had his autograph back in the day...lost it.
Call me crazy but I love when you play roots music. It seems when playing blues, country and soul it exposes the pretenders and elevates the gifted and separates the men from the boys in the feel department.
The thing about EH pedals is that they were more affordable.
I was recording a record maybe 10-15 yrs back and at the time I had a 50th anniversary blonde Vox and Peavey hot rod Deluxe clone. We were close micing everything as usual and then just randomly took the sm57 back about 10 feet into the middle of the room. I switched to just the Peavey and singled out the 57 and bam = instant vintage Jimmie Page!!!! I mean it was incredible how much my Les Paul went from outstanding tone to raw shred like Zepplin II in just a flick of the switch. Can't agree more with experimenting on mic placement
Man, my grandma used to play Hawaiian acoustic guitar... Apparently she had a normal acoustic converted to Hawaiian style. I wonder what ever happened to her guitars... she passed a few years ago now. Wish I could find those old acoustics....

My wife and I took our 10 year old (at the time) son to see Don Ho at his nightclub in Honolulu in 1998. Don said, to paraphrase, "I'm going to sing for you the song, "Tiny Bubbles". I've sung that song twice a night for 30 years...I hate that damn song." The place erupted. He was a hilariously funny, dirty minded dude onstage, but extremely polite one on one. We had a photo taken with Don before the show around his big rattan "throne". I told my wife she should sit in the chair while I and our son would stand with Don. He said, emphatically, "the man sits, the wife stands"....OMG we got a laugh out of that.

Holy Sh**!! My Dad had a '59 Bel Air. It was roomy to say the least. My brothers and I would play a game we called "fourth and one" in the back seat while making the long drive to Grandma's. It was a simple game. As the name implied, the youngest would try to dive over top of us from one side of the car to the other to score a touchdown. Things usually devolved pretty quickly into crying and/or a fight. If only he had Jim Otto leading the way for him things would have turned out better.

My picker friend always says--it's the things everybody else throws away that end up becoming insanely valuable. The box from that old toy etc. Had all of those '52 cards not gone in the trash prices may be different today :)
I strongly agree with Mr. Gruhn. Never ever modify a vintage guitar other than standard maintenance (worn frets, etc ). Too bad so many great Roy Smecks were ruined by converting them to regular guitars.
