My Grandmother used to take me down to the Cape Town 'docks' to watch the trains 'shunt' when I was 6 or 7 years old.. The whole experience was mesmerizing and watching this took me back 50 years. I could almost smell the coal. Fabulous , thank you for sharing.
@@tedpolet5431 I've just watched it again Ted and once again stirred up memories of that golden era. Although too young to have fully appreciated what was going on I'm still glad I experienced that old world technology in action. Fascinating to watch. Thanks again.
s2`s shunting in cape town harbour mostly....loved these little monsters......loved to be the front runner in the morning at 06h00.. from paarden eiland to the harbour in cape town.....sometimes used to be 9 engines coupled together....(first 3 min`s of video)
Thanks, Armand - it is 40 years ago that I made these images. I hitched a footplate ride with a driver named Johan Mostert, do you know him? I gave him a tour of my ship and then he invited me to Paarden Eiland sheds. The S2s were very powerful but light-footed - they slipped easily.
Thank you for sharing this video. I remember this as a young boy growing up in Cape Town. So sad though. It's all gone now including most of the rail infrastructure.

Glad you liked this, Neil. It may be ancient history now, but the memories to me are as real as yours must be.
