  • Learn from my mistakes! In the restoration of car I have had lots of rusty bolts and parts. I got the Eastwood 5 Pound Tumbler to clean them up. The product worked great but self destructed.
amzn.to/35schEA - The tumbler is available from Amazon as well. Check prices first though.
amzn.to/2SzIp3m This is the media you want to use. Green pyramids work best for rust removal.

My HF unit did exactly the same thing with the metal wing nut. The problem is not the knob/nut, but the crappy threaded rod. I just put a zip tie above the nut to prevent it from backing out and let it rip. You can replace the threaded rod by cutting it off and attaching a new rod with a threaded sleeve.
Another weak point is the plastic lid, which will fail around the edges of the washer. I fabbed up some oversized plates from scrap sheet metal for both sides of the lid. The bottom piece is held in place by a nylon-lock nut with a zip tie on the bottom side and the wing nut with a zip tie on the top side. The order of those pieces, from top to bottom is zip tie/wing-nut/plate/lid/plate/lock nut/zip tie.
Yeah, it's a hassle and shouldn't be needed, but, like a really good divorce attorney, a very good idea that you shouldn't need. :=-)

thanks you. I'm restoring my car and wanted to do the same, put all screws in a vibratory machine to save time.

Only use a unit like this if you plan to paint each piece afterwards. While they do a great job of removing rust and grime they also will remove the zinc coating so they will be very prone to re-rusting if you don't either re-plate them or paint them.

Mine did the same thing, replaced the supplied rod with a 1/4-20 and all is well

It's a bummer that it is so close to being great. Such a minor modification fixes it. Mine only required a washer.

thank you for the video, so is that rod not removable, seems very similar to the one found in carburetors that holds on the air cleaner housing

You can remove it. The key is just making sure that the pressure isn't destroying the plastic. For me a washer solved the problem but I am certain there are other ways to address it.

Did you exceed five pounds, which includes parts and the media? Did you read and follow the manual assiduously? Did they exchange it? I just unpacked mine, but have not used it yet. I've read the manual twice, and plan to not fill the bowl more than 50%. I'm not sure the unit is to blame. Did you put all that metal in the bowl? I'd bet that would be more than five pounds.

The first time i ran it i only had a small amount of metal and it vibrated itself to death. Once i realized the problem i shimmed it and the problem was solved. Eastwood has a great service department and they took it back. I recommend you keep it but add a couple washers like i explained. Good luck.

Just got one and it has metal wingnut for it

I think mine had a wingnut as well but that wasn't the problem. The issue was that the metal shaft (and sleeve) up the middle deformed the plastic and everything got way too loose.

I guarantee you eastwood and harbor freight buy these from some chinese company and they are the exact same unit.

Nope they aren't. They don't assemble the same way for example. The eastwood one is definitely a little more refined.
